I understand the vocal fry but bit I don't know what OP means with the rest of it...

Blackcats7 · 12/07/2024 12:07

Totally annoying affectation. Just adopted rising inflection ending statements drives me mad enough but vocal fry is even worse.
Presume some idiot started it then more idiots copied.
So many young people imitating the worst speech patterns and language that they see online/ tv. It is depressing. I know that language evolves and I don’t want or expect stilted perfection but this is wholesale degradation caused by and large from watching America’s low life exports.

charitynamechange · 12/07/2024 12:13

Urgh. My Cornish born and bred niece has developed this. She thinks it makes her sound cool. It doesn't!

BileBeansSara · 12/07/2024 12:19

'Those with vocal fry'

They DON'T have vocal fry. It's an affectation.

LoobyDoop2 · 12/07/2024 12:20

I read some really interesting stuff about vocal fry, that suggested it’s subconsciously adopted by young women in an attempt to appease people, because it comes across as non-threatening, submissive and so on. It’s an unconscious signal “be nice to me, I’m not a bitch or a brat”. The subliminal version of virtue signalling and pronouns.

Biggleslefae · 12/07/2024 12:24

Oh yes, squeaky, breathy little girl voice! I hate it too 🤬
Also adverts which are voiced by women in little girl voice, lispy and unable to pronounce the r 🤬

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 12/07/2024 12:26

I didn't know there was a term for it but my colleague (30s) does this. It's accompanied by what she thinks is a flirtatious charm but it's very difficult to listen to. We share some clients and they've commented. I've never said a word but I wish she could listen to herself sometimes.

Allow me to link to this video by linguist Dr Geoff Lindsey about vocal fry - it does help in getting over the annoyance (a bit). The fun fact that all Finns speak with vocal fry was a real eye opener for me

This video is absolutely fascinating!

Vocal fry is annoying once you spot it. It's unkind to point it out as now we all got irritated by it!

I'm not sure what your other points are about. Regional accents can be very melodic- I assume you aren't referencing that?

It's not an accent
And VF is something people actively do. It's s choice.

So right OP. I have lost count of the podcasts I can't listen to because of the host doing this. This is a good example:

I couldn’t watch to the end of the video. A man telling a young girl to shut up. How original.

Right?! And if you watch more than 30 seconds you get to see how it was previously associated with upper class English and also how he rips to shreds that other video posted.

I frequently find American women's voices highly irritating to listen to because of the high pitch and squeakiness😬

museumum · 12/07/2024 12:42

It is very annoying, but I don't believe it's a choice for those who are surrounded by everyone else doing it (plus media) anymore than saying too many 'ums' or the question uplift at the end of the sentence. It's contaigous and very hard to stamp out. Moaning at teenagers for it is no more successful than telling those of my age not to say 'like' in each sentence (a la vicky pollard).
All of these things are adopted by teens who are self conscious as a way to cover lack of self confidence in what they're saying - the questioning intonation is asking if the listener agrees or knows what they mean, as does 'innit' at the end of every sentence, the 'like' is a qualifier saying 'im not entirely sure what I'm saying'. there's no point in policing these in teen to teen conversation, we can only hope that young people learn to speak without them in formal situations.

I'd always assumed that the creaky sound was caused by old fashioned recording equipment 😂

He proves that this is a realist sexist bandwagon to jump on - so i recommend other mumsnetters watch it too!

RomeoMcFlourish · 12/07/2024 12:47

I’ve just tried speaking like this, just to see if I could, but I can’t do it - I am naturally quite high pitched though. I have noticed others doing it before but didn’t realise there was a name for it.

Yes
it isn’t vocal fry but Bernadette in The Big Bang Theory sounds like she’s on helium

I think it was considered a good idea by the actress but I cannot fathom why

I’m not sure all my annoyances are specifically vocal fry - but there seems to be a trend to speak like that lady in the Loudermilk clip and it drives me mad. I avoid video anything now if there’s a transcript alternative. There are a few comedies I rejected in minutes because of the speech affectations.

And talking at top speed all the time. I leave myself voice notes like that as reminders, but talking that way to others can be very annoying for your audience.

ThePoshUns · 12/07/2024 12:52

Has never heard of this before.
Is it just a female thing?

Funnywonder · 12/07/2024 12:59

When I hear vocal fry, I am inwardly urging the speaker to just clear their feckin throat. Sometimes I involuntarily start clearing mine, a bit like when you press your foot down on the imaginary brake when someone is driving too fast.

This is so interesting! The sexist connotations is something I hadn't considered but he's absolutely right!

DoNotScrapeMyDataBishes · 12/07/2024 13:06

Vocal fry and uptalk don't bother me - and yes I notice them because of my job. I guess I deal with so many people with atypical speech that the only thing I get bothered about is if they can get their meaning across these days.

DoNotScrapeMyDataBishes · 12/07/2024 13:07

On the other hand my kid can stick their sigma rizz down the skibbidy toilet at the moment cos they're just making themselves sound like a right prat.
