Just to confirm I am neither advocating violence nor wishing Trump to die at the end of a gun BUT...
As a thought experiment, had Trump been killed last night - would the election in the US have resulted in a less extreme (and more competent) Republican president with a potentially better outcome for the future?

Edited

Yes.

It's very convenient that the shooter was killed so we will never truly know his motivation Hmm or if he was put up to it Hmm

Such a young man and a Republican at that Confused

A serious assassination attempt from a roof nearby would involved the sniper being there and ready hours (if not a day) in advance, not "crawling across the roof" just beforehand Hmm

Have you seen the interview with the very stereotypical trump supporter telling the presenter he was pointing out the man crawling across the roof and the police did nothing?

I did immediately think of the Queens "recollections may vary" approach!

No insight that if you wind people up with rhetoric you don't always have the impact you want.

That would be too much to expect. I’m afraid my thoughts about this are less charitable than most people’s so I won’t share them.

Twenty years old. Twenty years old and so radicalised he does something like this and now he's dead. It's horrific. And not a thing will be learnt.

He had a damn good aim, too.

If Trump had been killed America would be on fire right now, I reckon. Riots galore from Trump supporters.

An extract from the NBC News report about the gunman.
Pennsylvania voter records listed a Thomas Matthew Crooks with the same address and birth date as a registered Republican, though it was not clear from the records when that was put in place
Regardless of any motives or reasons for radicalisation, I fully agree with your earlier post that this has won Trump the election.

IClaudine · 14/07/2024 09:40

Yep. Biden might as well start packing.

What news to wake up to.

Obviously, I am glad he is alright, as much as I dislike the man I don't want him dead and I am desperately sorry for those injured and killed but I can't shake this horrid sinking feeling that today, is the day he became president.

My Ds woke me to tell me last night.
The whole thing was shocking, but odd.
The shooter would have been obvious to security before Trump spoke surely?
Trump's injury was minor (there's an Agatha Christie novel where such an injury is self applied with nail clippers!)
He got back up, like the pugilist he is, shouting: 'fight, fight, fight' to the crowd & refusing to leave without his shoes.
Online this morning some people are questioning if it was staged. I find the fact that people are questioning very interesting in itself. More polarity.
DT supporters will now act like he is Lazarus (only he raised himself!). Others might think he arranged this himself. Who knows. In a way that matters less than the damage this will cause.
I notice many world leaders (inc KS) describe him as 'President Trump' not 'former President Trump'. He's won :(

Anyone seen Bob Roberts ?

Not sure why it's my first thought

We are living in “interesting times” indeed.
Agree the election has now been handed to Trump on a plate, although tbf the waiter was fast approaching him anyway, with Biden being the way he is now.

As an aside, I didn’t realise the BBC reporter Gary O Donoghue was completely blind, until I just read it on the Trump shooting thread.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/07/2024 10:02

WTF? Keir Starmer describing Trump as 'President Trump' in his twitter feed. 😱

I think the convention is that if someone has ever held the title, they are referred to as that, but I could be wrong.

Jason118 · 14/07/2024 10:10

All ex presidents are referred to as President, it's customary.

NoDishiForRishi · 14/07/2024 10:14

Yeah I'm certain that referring to all ex presidents as President is a thing over there.

IClaudine · 14/07/2024 10:16

Yes, you are all right I believe. Starmer would not make such a Bidenesque error!

Agree with this.

As an aside - a shoe was left. (And something white)

I just watched an informative Sky news interview with 'Joseph' an OBGYN who was right next to the poor man who was shot & died, & a woman who was wounded. Very sad for them.

To be fair my understanding was that US Presidents kept the title President for the rest of their life, so for instance Bill Clinton would be referred to as President Clinton, not former President Clinton.

Apparently it was amusing when the 2 Bushes were in a room

Create such hate and then be surprised it turns against you

America is a bleak place at the moment

Thanks all - you learn something new everyday.

Notonthestairs · 14/07/2024 11:04

The interview with the BBC (Mark Mardell I think) is extraordinary. Terrible failure of security when members of the audience are pointing out a (then) possible shooter.

So much will rest on how Trump reacts to this - whether he can bring himself to call for a de-escalation in violent rhetoric and rejects attempts to point the finger at the Democrats/Biden.
