My Dad has read the Telegraph for 50 years and he said last year that it had gone 'barking mad'.

He’s not wrong. It’s been particularly bonkers in the last three weeks.

DuncinToffee · 26/07/2024 10:31

Frost has been complaining about the attached bottle lids as well, as if manufactures are going to make UK only bottles

Isabel Oakshott was at it as well this morning.

Am quite amused by the rancour concerning plastic bottle lids - it's an easy, cheap way to reduce litter and hopefully improve recycling. Similar to what they did for ring pull drinks. Remember all those ring pulls you'd find in parks - I sliced the side of my foot on one years ago.

Now if they could do the same for glass bottle tops (beer bottles) I'd be happy and my dog would have to weave through them in areas where the teenagers hang out in our parks. (Yes, there are plenty of bins - the tops just don't seem to find there way to them).

DuncinToffee · 26/07/2024 10:53

Brexiteers would prefer litter it seems

pointythings · 26/07/2024 10:54

I love the attached bottle lids and am delighted we have them.

Notonthestairs · 26/07/2024 10:56

Can I just say that I've read Cleverly's tweet pitch for leadership and I agree with aspects of it! He said essentially the party needed to get back to having a broad appeal to a larger range of voters.
It's common sense that they'll need centrist voters as well as the right wingers if they have any hope in 2029.
Labour and L/D occupy 500 seats - if you can't swing those you don't have a hope.

You'd think its not rocket science but from his and the parties pov, its a shame he has just realised this....

He has been part of the Tories electoral oblivion.

CassieMaddox · 26/07/2024 11:01

I think if I was picking from that lot I'd probably go Cleverly.

In American news, Harris seems to have come out fighting. From a speech to teachers:
“We want to ban assault weapons, and they want to ban books,” she said.

Exactly! I just can't get my head around why they would want to get their knickers in a twist about something as innocuous (but is at least an attempt to 'save the planet') as this.

And Oakshott actually starts off by saying:
The aim is to address a genuine problem: the environmental scourge of discarded plastic bottles and lids. This type of rubbish takes up to 450 years to decompose and does terrible things to dolphins and whales. Few would dispute the mess it makes.

So WTF is she on about then? "Boo hoo! Dolphins are dying but I don't care. I want the sovereignty to be able to throw my bits of plastic wherever I like "?

Arsehole.

Notonthestairs · 26/07/2024 11:02

I think a proportion of Conservatives know this - they allowed themselves to be drowned out by the batshit and the headline hungry and yes, that's on them.

They may sound reasonable when pitching. That's how we got 14 years or Tories.

However they also have a clear track record that is clearly at odds with the words.

One day, maybe in our lifetimes but certainly from the youth, someone will ask a minister for an interview, and then turn the mic off, and print the questions and the ministers voting record.

We don't give two shits what you say. We can (and will) judge you on deeds.

Anyway for now - and possibly forever - the travails of the Tory party are a matter of supreme indifference. I can easily see the LibDems quietly moving into their gap on the political spectrum. And very quickly, if the Tories really are intent on tacking right.

That "Brexit" thing really didn't work out for them, did it ?

Notonthestairs · 26/07/2024 11:05

Exactly. Pure nonsense. It's out of touch with the electorate - which goes back to the issue of lacking a broad appeal.
Talking themselves in to fringe party status.

New thread needed soon!

Title suggestions?

I like to think of myself as well informed, but I have suddenly realised the oat milk and water bottles I recently cursed weren't faulty, but the future.

Being honest, it is a nuisance

However, I also see it's an EU measure <dramatic horn stab !!!!!!>

RafaistheKingofClay · 26/07/2024 11:22

It’s the second most annoying thing the EU have done since making you have to accept cookies every time you go on a website.

Which wouldn't be so bad, but some sites seem to need it every single visit.

Really fucks up accessibility software. But luckily the disabled don't count. Phew. Imagine if they did !!!!!

I thought so at first, but when you figure out how to make them click out of the way they don’t impinge on drinking or pouring.

They only seem to forget your previous settings if you reject all. When you accidentally hit agree, you are never asked again.
