I read a novel years ago about a nominee being shot superficially at a presidential rally. It turned out to have been organised by a member of their team to garner support.

As a thought experiment, had Trump been killed last night - would the election in the US have resulted in a less extreme (and more competent) Republican president with a potentially better outcome for the future?

Wow. Reading on here and twitter I feel like we will never really know what happened in this shooting.

Obviously, I am glad he is alright, as much as I dislike the man I don't want him dead and I am desperately sorry for those injured and killed but I can't shake this horrid sinking feeling that today, is the day he became president.

And the devastating thing is that in the midst of this travesty Trump will use the not knowing the truth to his advantage and his extreme supporters will lap it up.

A serious assassination attempt from a roof nearby would involved the sniper being there and ready hours (if not a day) in advance, not "crawling across the roof" just beforehand
