Yes, lame but the last thread was nearly full.

Article from today's Times outlining issues within the justice system.

The Consevatives knew these problems were becoming emergencies but, as described, lacked the political capital to deal with it and feared that they would be framed as soft on crime - shove it under the rug and leave it for the next administration to deal with.

... and thank you for the new thread

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2024 09:03

Brew thanks for the new thread @L1ttledrummergirl

Welcome @PawPrintsInMyPansies

Good to hear that things are improving @Notonthestairs those nurses are just wonderful aren't they?

I see that the media are trying to jump all over Starmer for not saying that Biden is unfit to run, like he could ever actually say that? We can all see that Biden needs to step away but it's not our PM's place to say it, that would be a huge diplomatic boo-boo.

BestIsWest · 12/07/2024 09:17

That is one grumpy looking cat on the front of the Star.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/07/2024 09:29

So if when England lose in the football, I'm guessing there will be threads blaming Keir Starmer?

And on a serious note. I fully agree that while it isn't down to the UK PM to critise the US President (would Sunak have done so?) , Biden's last two gaffes were extraordinary. Do the Democrats need a coup to remove him?

newnamethanks · 12/07/2024 09:43

Things are looking up though. Even the Daily Star compelled to pay the cat tax.

Even if it has used the most pissed off looking cat most of us have ever seen.

Hope today’s a better day @Notonthestairs.

RobinStrike · 12/07/2024 10:07

Hi can I join if I don't have a cat? I don't really understand the cat tax, maybe I've not been here long enough. I enjoyed the other thread and am looking forward to the new government and the Kings Speech next week.

I reckon they need someone to dope his food with something that will make him poorly - nothing mega bad and recoverable - to give him an excuse to step down and save face. It's very common for people with early stage alzheimer's not to recognise they have a problem because they forget the things they've got in a muddle over. My mum didn't even remember having a brain scan the next day but "in the moment" she can seem really with it, lively and sparky. Those moments are getting less and less frequent though. Biden reminds me of mum at the stage she was diagnosed.

pointythings · 12/07/2024 10:11

Hi @RobinStrike, welcome! Cat tax is purely voluntary but if you do want to share a photo we are happy with pretty much anything - we haven't had an elephant yet, I believe.

SerendipityJane · 12/07/2024 10:29

Just joining in with the sense of relief this past week. Since this is MN, and hyperbole is compulsory, I am going to suggest that the country is going to have PSTD for a while, as we all expect to read of YetAnotherToryFuckup (anyone up for YATF as a code to piss the bots off ?)

RobinStrike · 12/07/2024 10:30

Thanks @pointythings for the welcome. I am very happy to supply an elephant photo. Really enjoying this thread. It's so good to feel optimistic about politics finally!

Starmer is now being criticised for not suggesting Biden is unfit for office 🙄

Here are some flowers

Yes, I noticed Beth Rigby needling KS over that. Rather poor of her I thought.
I so hope the US election keeps Trump out. We need sensible leaders right now.

Thanks for new thread. How can it be a week already?? To my shame we still have a Tory here (now shadow Sec of State for Scotland...). 'my election week' was dominated by Ds being ill. He continues to rest quietly at home whilst we await MRI results (& I wonder how wise moving to Uni in 7 weeks would be).

pinboard · 12/07/2024 11:13

not sure why I've cocked up my username as it says my old one in 'settings'?
anyway, it's me Grin not a huge poster so no loss at all if noone recognises me.
(& I was totally confused for the election night thread when everyone changed)
no cat tax but one day I'll put a winsome pic of the hound on

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2024 12:38

You are still showing up as pinboard but I know who you are Wink

How is DS doing now?

My cat can look pretty pissed off. Here’s my tax of her looking a bit more cheery than usual because she’s out in her catio. Princess.

@pinboard I hope your son improves soon, and the MRI gives you some answers. A very worrying time for you. Flowers

I’ve really enjoyed the past 7 days of just feeling mild consternation over some policies/future policies, rather than being aboard the rollercoaster of OMFG WHAT NONSENSE HAVE THEY DREAMED UP NOW!!!!!! that a Tory govt brought almost daily.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2024 13:04

John Crace serving everyone well in the Guardian today. He's even paid the cat tax, albeit in his column.

It's strangely refreshing.
