Sorry for duplicate post...

The three new Deputy Speakers just elected are:

  • Tory MP Nus Ghani
  • Tory MP Caroline Nokes
  • Labour MP Judith Cummins

Caroline is an ex Pony Club mum - sounds a perfect role for her!!😁

BIossomtoes · 23/07/2024 18:52

It’s always amazed me that Nokes is a Tory, she’s definitely one of the few decent ones.

Zonder · 23/07/2024 19:40

prettybird · 23/07/2024 14:52

I've mused that it should perhaps be kept on short term as a prison ship to ease the prison accommodation crisis.

But it probably wouldn't meet minimum decency requirements....

It could be given to the National Trust and run as a museum of past government glories.

Zonder · 23/07/2024 19:40

I really hoped Emily T would be a deputy speaker.

pointythings · 23/07/2024 20:04

Barely three weeks in and this government has done more grown up, sensible governing than the last lot managed in the last 3 years I am being generous to them here.

DuncinToffee · 23/07/2024 20:08

Government just voted against ending the 2 child benefit cap .

7 Labour MPs voted with opposition parties to scrap it

Conservative MP's abstained

edit to add that the 7 Labour MP's are now suspended.

cardibach · 23/07/2024 20:10

Keir demonstrating strength. They’ve said they’ll do this when 5hey can fund it. Should be sooner rather than later though.

I agree - we can't have everything we want right now. If the economy keeps picking up, it can be done sensibly.

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 20:14

Interestingly, one of the rebels wasn't Duffield, who wrote an article in the Times about it. Trying to make sense of that.

I think she wants a Committee position.

Notonthestairs · 23/07/2024 20:25

Interested to see this -

MPs will be prevented from taking on second jobs that fail to meet a new test of putting constituents first, under government plans to “turn the page” on an era of sleaze and scandal.
Despite growing anger over MPs doing lucrative outside work while also serving their constituents, the new Labour government will not ban second jobs but will severely restrict lobbying work.

Ministers say they will close loopholes that allow MPs to take on additional paid lobbying or advisory roles as long as they relate to policy or how parliament works.

Emily T is marmite though, so wouldn't ever get even a Deputy Speaker role.

She'd be a formidable member of a Select Committee though.

Zonder · 23/07/2024 20:27

That's amazing @Notonthestairs

Fair enough re Emily T. I love her, personally.

Because she's all mouth, no trousers.
I'm very bored of her opinions at this point.

RobinStrike · 23/07/2024 22:12

Apparently Duffield tested positive for Covid? Very good timing!

Piggywaspushed · 23/07/2024 22:17

Oh really ? How interesting.

BestIsWest · 23/07/2024 22:23

I think Emily T said she was hoping to be chair of a select committee- Foreign affairs maybe? She was on Electoral Dysfunction last week.

I completely agree. And tired of the worship of her.

What a joke. I heard him on radio 4 this morning. He couldn't answer the questions and clearly has no understanding of why the Tories got smashed. Surely they must realise they need some new blood, not associated with the previous govt?

It's interesting 7 of her colleagues have now lost the whip.
What it says to me is as much as Duffield likes to complain about Labour, she actually does like being a Labour MP.

I think Starmer did the right thing taking the whip off MacDonnell. Neutralise the poison from the outset. Who votes against their own parties kings speech ffs.
