I don't think one can over-estimate the importance of this. A similar approach to public sector workers - might mean that strikes are avoided with a lower payrise than the Tories would have had to do, because people will feel listened to and valued.

Yes, I agree. The Tories were so derogatory about Doctors, ex Health Minister Victoria Atkins calling them 'doctors in training' and saying she preferred that term to 'Doctors'.
Who wants to negotiate if you are ridiculed.

Wait... what??

I have just done an enormous double take.

Christopher Chope is deputy speaker?? Chope???!!

WTAF?!

I suppose it gets him away from doing any governmental things though...

Evenstar · 20/07/2024 17:01

@Piggywaspushed it seems he is only an interim Deputy Speaker, the nominations close on Monday 22nd they will elect permanent Deputy Speakers on Tuesday 23rd. Hopefully he won’t be elected 😬

Thought this was quite funny on Twitter

Leave the Tories 'irrelevant' Telegraph.? Yes. We know. And we live in hope.

SerendipityJane · 20/07/2024 17:44

Quite amusing seeing the MS Start curated UK news summary ... the Express is still writing as if the Tories are in charge. You have to read a few lines before it dawns that the protagonist in "Suella Braverman savages Yvetter Cooper over small boats plan" is not Suella themselves.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 20/07/2024 17:49

Hello all
I don't think I have posted for a while but am still reading.
Just coming on the echo the WTF 🤬 re Badenochs speech. It was unnecessary, rude and arrogant.
Also Aitkins behaviour at the dispatch box ☹️
In other news there a a trillion threads on X with the same narrative of " Labour Government Fir two weeks and we already have riots ... " with a load of racist comments for good measure!
The hate of some people is very disturbing.
In other news I think our new PM and his crew are looking like the grown ups. 😊

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2024 07:30

This is a tough one. Schools need better funding. Behaviour has got demonstrably worse. The support systems for vulnerable students are chaotic. Many non vulnerable students are lippy, entitled and operate under a culture of zero respect to any adults. It's stressful. The porblem with Paul Dix (mentioned in the article) is that some schools interpret his ideas as suggesting that every single child has an underlying reason for poor behaviour which needs rootling out. At the same time. Andrew Tateism spreads... schools are required to police children the police and social services won't go near...

Be interested to see what Labour come up with. Because if its' just a flat 'Ban The Booths' , many class teachers are going to feel unsupported. That won't help the retention crisis!

If I could have my one wish for UK education, I'd get rid of uniform : so many minor dispute around uniform escalate. It's a battle ground.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 07:32

Absolutely @Piggywaspushed that's what I meant by working together to make it happen.

Although I'd ban the booths right now.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2024 08:07

I'm v conflicted about that. Not sure what is supposed to be done with eg the boy who publicly threatens to rape a female staff member or the other boy who comments on teacher's breast sizes... or tells female staff violence against women is completely justified .

Real things that have happened...

Booths for having no pen. That's just silly.

ThatbloodyRoblox · 21/07/2024 08:13

Re the article about behaviour sanctions in schools..
We have a school that runs a very strict behaviour policy and it is honestly truly awful for the pupils and some of the staff.
The trust and a couple of their schools ( my yr7 child's included) have been all over local news recently because of this reason.
We have the teachers striking and so many members of staff have left.
Children are suffering significantly with their mental health.
The whole debate around the school has become very toxic indeed. It is very much "my way or the highway " from the school's perspective and some parents are equally digging in their heels.
It is a desperately sad situation and the only ones losing out are the pupils caught in the middle of this. ☹️

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2024 08:19

I suspect that's very near me!

In all my experience of booths none have been for such serious things as threatening rape. And in that case I think I'd call the police.

I have seen them used for really unnecessary reasons where other routes could have been taken.

This sounds very similar to a school / trust near me. I guess there are more than one though!

Well, I can tell you that boy got nowhere near a booth...

I think the issue is the 'other routes' take a lot of time, staff who don't exist and can also turn into teacher blaming.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 08:35

I've said this on another thread but I do think a lot of things could be avoided with different training / ethos. Training takes up some CPD / inset time but doesn't necessarily have to be very staff intensive. Manning an isolation room takes up staff.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 08:36

But for any of this schools need real support and resources and that's what I hope the govt will put in place before making blanket announcements.

pointythings · 21/07/2024 08:42

I so agree with abolishing uniform! How much energy could be diverted into teaching if teachers didn't have to police what their students were wearing! And the positive effect on ND pupils with sensory issues would be enormous.

I'm kind of mixed on this. I like uniform if it can be a leveller but I can't bear the focus on uniform rules. Some primary schools have a broad range of what's acceptable in uniform but secondary schools seem to view it as a military issue.

And it's nearly always girls that seem to fall foul of it.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 09:17

Yes! Wrong skirt length, wrong colour shoes, wearing make up. They're not in the army!
