I suspect that's very near me!

Yes I think it may be close but a different "county"
It is just so draconian. My son was just broken by the end of this year. He is already on the
" why bother I will get in trouble for something" pathway and he is only yr7.
He sees absolutely nothing positive at all about going to school. He isn't a bad kid, he is the most academic kid either but he is a very disillusioned young man. So school for him is like Groundhog Day just the same endless grind day after day and nothing changes.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 09:25

@ThatbloodyRoblox that's tragic. And so common. I hate secondary schools with this awful negative culture.

Yeah, I have a friend whose DS is year 5 and she's getting worried.

The intriguing thing is how the Trust cannot cope when they can't brainwash the staff.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/07/2024 09:52

It would be interesting to see how the numbers of dc needing intervention for anxiety compare between schools, and the types of ethos within the schools.

Treating children like prisoners is never going to end well.

@Zonder I come from a country where there is no school uniform - there's no breakdown of law and order, behaviour in schools isn't worse than in the UK (it's about the same) and educational outcomes are the same too. It's just not essential.

But if you're going to have uniform, and I accept it's part of the UK psyche, then it needs to be flexible, affordible, comfortable - all the things it isn't in many secondary schools now. The policing of hair, nails and makeup also needs to stop. I had a girl in my class at school who was full goth - corpse makeup, mad multicoloured hair, the clothes. She worked hard, behaved well and achieved highly and had zero impact on order in class. The UK has a thing about appearances over substance and it's changing too slowly.

This is a tough one. Schools need better funding. Behaviour has got demonstrably worse. The support systems for vulnerable students are chaotic. Many non vulnerable students are lippy, entitled and operate under a culture of zero respect to any adults. It's stressful. The porblem with Paul Dix (mentioned in the article) is that some schools interpret his ideas as suggesting that every single child has an underlying reason for poor behaviour which needs rootling out. At the same time. Andrew Tateism spreads... schools are required to police children the police and social services won't go near...

Be interested to see what Labour come up with. Because if its' just a flat 'Ban The Booths' , many class teachers are going to feel unsupported. That won't help the retention crisis!

If I could have my one wish for UK education, I'd get rid of uniform : so many minor dispute around uniform escalate. It's a battle ground.

Absolutely agree re uniform. Or at least think it needs reining in!

Nowadays it doesn't matter if your wearing an age 7-8 or a size 18 post pubescent girl with an ample bosom - you are expected to dress the same all in the spirit of it apparently improving your learning.

I'm waiting for the Penny to drop that being comfortable would aid concentration, mental health and learning.

I also hope it doesn't go from one extreme to the other.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2024 11:18

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2024 08:07

I'm v conflicted about that. Not sure what is supposed to be done with eg the boy who publicly threatens to rape a female staff member or the other boy who comments on teacher's breast sizes... or tells female staff violence against women is completely justified .

Real things that have happened...

Booths for having no pen. That's just silly.

Yes - the issue isn't inclusion. It's the use of it for being normal and human and forgetting a pen!

If punishments were for actual offences I think that would be a start.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2024 12:01

Ironically, I think girls especially would dress less 'problematically' if we had no uniforms.

I agree. I think half the issues of trying to "adapt" the uniform comes from the fact it's so uncomfortable and bland and I feminine is a lot of places.

One of the best schools near us has started to struggle massively with behaviour and ofsted gone from outstanding to requires improvement in a few years. They had the most sensible uniform policy.

So their answer to solve the issues they have is to go zero tolerance and add blazers.

I just don't get why that's seen as the answer?

But that's probably because of my job 😂

BestIsWest · 21/07/2024 12:31

I agree too. I live in the same street as a no uniform 6th form college. The girls are mostly in baggy jeans and hoodies, maybe a bare midriff crop top if it’s hot.

I totally agree.

grannycake · 21/07/2024 13:44

Ex teacher here - I suspect I taught in @BestIsWest college. I loathe uniform - I hated it as a pupil and I hated policing it when I taught in schools - such a waste of time. If students turn up and participate in lessons I don't care what colour hair, nails they've got or whether there's a tiny logo on their shoes.

VimtoVimto · 21/07/2024 14:02

One of the local school’s dress code for both pupils and teachers was more restrictive than my son had to wear in the head office of a major bank.

BestIsWest · 21/07/2024 14:44

@grannycake, I suspect so! I know we’re in the same constituency.

Biden has stepped down…

Wow.
Have to hope the Democrats handle the next steps - whatever they are! - well. 😬

IClaudine · 21/07/2024 18:57

Thank God. Who will suceed him? He hasn't endorsed Harris yet, so it seems open for now.

BIossomtoes · 21/07/2024 18:59

Very sensible and dignified letter. The Democrats are going to have to be very careful who they select to stand.

RobinStrike · 21/07/2024 19:00

Thank goodness ! Will be interesting to see how they select their nominee.

pointythings · 21/07/2024 19:04

It's a huge relief, but agree the Democrats will have to choose carefully. But anything that has a better chance of stopping Trump is welcome.

BustingBaoBun · 21/07/2024 19:08

Yes, they need someone with a strong voice and full of vigour. I am not knocking Joe Biden saying this, his record of service is exemplary, but the job ages people and in his case it really has.

I hope Trump is running scared now

I doubt it. Trump’s relationship with reality is too tenuous for him to be scared. He thinks he’s the Messiah.

Cheguevarahamster · 21/07/2024 19:11

Just seen the news about Boden. Good decision. Now America needs someone to kick Trumps arse,
