No matter. I shall focus on the insufferably smug Ms Oakeshott having to spend time in Skegness. That's cheered me up a lot. Hope Nige drops in uninvited and spends a few hours boring them to tears.

I'm not a childless cat lady but would definitely be on his contempt list if we met. I am now just refusing to acknowledge the USA is there. 8 years of our yelling 'but they're Nazis' and the answer remains 'yes, we know, we like it'. I can't bear it and the future with these creatures in it is too horrible to contemplate. I'm going to ignore it until I'm compelled to acknowledge it, cowardly, but I can't take any more. Thank heavens I don't qlive there.

My DS is planning to live there. Thanks to our previous government having upped the amount of savings you need to bring a spouse, he hasn't got enough. He would have had under the old limit. So he's going. This is the first time I have hoped that one of my DC's relationships breaks up. I feel like a bitch and am not telling anyone except you guys. 😥

Oh Pointy I feel for you 💐

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2024 09:10

Sorry Blossomtoes, the word 'ring' is used on sm.

How worrying for you Pointythings, but the election hasn't happened yet.

At least that means that Tice has showm his face there unlike his master who has already abandoned Clacton.

Any Trump threads need to initiate a cat tax

countrygirl99 · 17/07/2024 09:17

@pointythings I feel your pain. It's highly unlikely my son and DIL will ever come back to the UK due to the visa requirements. So that's a water management specialist and a software engineer we are down.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2024 09:18

I don't have pets so here is the Speaker's latest addition

Breaking mews: Here is Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle's newest family member Clem.

Clem joins “head mouser" Attlee in the Speaker's House.

Just posted this on another thread, it seems Biden is taking some steps to mitigate the damage the orange one can do

I feel for you too pointy. I suspect I’ll be facing the same thing in a few years time. I was threatened with Australia too at one stage.

medianewbie · 17/07/2024 10:10

@Evenstar - that's hugely encouraging. Thanks for posting that.

Love the slug and lettuce. Talking of the Telegraph, Isobel Oakshott’s extolling the joys of Skegness this morning! I get the feeling her heart’s not in it though.

maybe ...

Oh @pointythings, I feel for you and hope things work out as you wish.

In place ready to watch the State Opening of Parliament. 😊

NoDishiForRishi · 17/07/2024 10:35

I understand @pointythings my DD is 7 so we're a long way off anything like that but I don't relish the idea of her ever moving abroad. I'd never say it (except to you guys) because obviously I want her to flourish and do well in life but selfishly I want her where I can still see her.

I'm going on holiday on Saturday so I really need to tidy up and get organised but instead I'm going to sit and watch the state opening of parliament and crochet a doll for DD. Priorities. 👍🏻

BIWI · 17/07/2024 10:43

My DH's 2 nieces both did the post-university trip to Australia. Both ended up staying, marrying and producing children. Some 25 years later, my SIL (their mother) finds it terribly difficult - as do they. They would love to be together, but (financially) it's just not possible. Either for her to go there (in her late 70s) or them to come here. It's very sad.

pointythings · 17/07/2024 10:45

It's not the abroad I have a problem with. It's this particular abroad. Biden's proposed measures are encouraging, but I am genuinely worried about a second Trump term.

tobee · 17/07/2024 10:51

Very understandable sentiments @pointythings

tobee · 17/07/2024 10:53

Breath of fresh air seeing Rita Chakrabarti presenting the State Opening rather than Huw Edwards

At least mine is in Europe in a country with sensible politics even if they are right next to Russia.

Shabana Mahmood looking very proud to be Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain. 😀

I think he’s a bit busy in his new constituency of Washington.

tobee · 17/07/2024 11:10

I think I might be the only one partaking in the live thread for SOP!! 😆
