Yep, makes my point very well "Role of ECJ to be negotiated" Cake n eat it" all over again.......

When are UK politicians going to realise that the EU isn't some sort of sweet shop.... ?

Want a better deal with EU ? then closer alignment is then required, which means ECJ.

Circular - Starmer has ruled this out.

Sue Gray accused of ‘subverting cabinet’ over Belfast stadium bailout

www.thetimes.com/article/203dadb0-e02c-4fa7-95ff-a9bd146b48cc?shareToken=dd19cc18177a2c99766c290bc27353e7

This could cause problems. Sue Gray seems to be developing a Dominic Cummings-type reputation for getting her own way and controlling the Cabinet. She reputedly had the number in Cabinet reduced because she felt larger numbers didn't make decision making easy.
She is getting people's backs up already.

Rishi Sunak was warned by senior civil servants a week before he called the election that he was at risk of breaching his legal responsibilities if he failed to take action over the prison overcrowding crisis, a leaked document reveals.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/article/2024/jul/16/revealed-sunak-was-warned-he-risked-breaching-legal-responsibilities-over-prisons-crisis-leaked-papers-show

So the administration of justice became 'untenable' - and rather than do their jobs (governing) Sunak called an election.

Not surprising at all.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2024 20:45

Not surprised at all to see The Times running Anti Sue Grey articles - I'm sure they are yearning for a bit of political drama.

RobinStrike · 16/07/2024 21:04

There were rumours before the election that she was unpopular because others in his office felt she had disproportionate influence.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2024 21:09

Yes, the media are definitely keen to frame Grey as the new Cummings.

CassieMaddox · 16/07/2024 21:14

I personally think the Johnson fans have the knives out still over party gate and wouldn't be surprised if the "stormont source" was a DUP buddy of BoJos.
Storm in a teacup. Hopefully the right wing press will get bored of it soon

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2024 21:59

We've had a daily diet of blue on blue infighting since Brexit really. The media need a bit of fresh meat.
Thats not to pretend the Labour Party are faction free - I am sure there are tensions, particularly as they recalibrate from campaigning to governing.

(Definitely agree the knifes are out for Grey post Partygate, despite the fact that she just doing her job)

LittleBowSheep · 16/07/2024 22:06

I saw a clip yesterday of Kier Starmer saying he won't name his children to allow them privacy, anybody else find this particularly nice? Like a decent family man.

Granted I am too young to remember many previous PMs and I definitely didn't have an interest in politics until the last couple of years so maybe the others did this too.

I think Boris did this too. Oh no, sorry, he just wasn't able to name all his children 😉

RobinStrike · 16/07/2024 22:16

I think Labour have benefitted enormously from Gray but I do think the fact she's managed to acquire money for the N Ireland sports ground in the face of all the other ministers' claims, which on the face of it would appear to be more urgent, does suggest she's got more power than I would have expected.

I bet they are. I suspect the media are in for a very quiet few months at least.

Notonthestairs · 16/07/2024 22:37

I'm not sure Grey's managed anything (yet)
"Downing Street sources said that no decision on the future of Casement Park had been made and an announcement was not imminent."
That said it also says Starmer is meeting Simon Harris on Wednesday so presumably it will be on the agenda. The Tories agreed funding but obviously that stalled.

But yes any funding allocated will need to be justified somehow given the pressures elsewhere.

The article reads to me like a preemptive strike.

Sorry to mention Vance again, but read this and immediately thought of these threads -

Donald Trump’s VP nominee JD Vance: “We are effectively run in this country…by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable at their own lives and the choices that they’ve made. And they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”

Aside from the fact it's fact free drivel, he doesn't seem to like women or cats - which doesn't seem to be a winning strategy.

HannibalHeyes · 16/07/2024 23:11

Sorry, just had to share this caption from twitter;

I keep getting Telegraph headlines on my iPad (behind a paywall though).

They make the Expresses Snowmaggadon every wink in winter look like mild overreactions!

Zonder · 17/07/2024 07:33

The Telegraph must be in a big sulk @itsgettingweird

BIossomtoes · 17/07/2024 07:55

Love the slug and lettuce. Talking of the Telegraph, Isobel Oakshott’s extolling the joys of Skegness this morning! I get the feeling her heart’s not in it though.

Fucks sake. What has happened to the US?

newnamethanks · 17/07/2024 08:36

I'm not a childless cat lady but would definitely be on his contempt list if we met. I am now just refusing to acknowledge the USA is there. 8 years of our yelling 'but they're Nazis' and the answer remains 'yes, we know, we like it'. I can't bear it and the future with these creatures in it is too horrible to contemplate. I'm going to ignore it until I'm compelled to acknowledge it, cowardly, but I can't take any more. Thank heavens I don't qlive there.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2024 08:42

They are all lining up to kiss the orange arse

BIossomtoes · 17/07/2024 08:44

Oh God, that conjures up a revolting image 🤢 I wish you hadn’t said that Duncin.
