My money's on David Lammy by February.

I'm prepared to accept that he was vague on how men acquire a cervix but still strangely certain despite obviously not actually knowing anything about it.
I'm not convinced that dogmatic certainty on a subject you know less than nothing about is a great trait for a foreign secretary.
It is true that he is likely to work better with our European counterparts but only because his bombastic certainties have ordained that.
His style is going to work until it doesn't, I think senior politicians need more diplomacy, subtlety and flexibility.

He doesn't sound remotely certain in that quote.

samedifferent · 10/07/2024 12:55

He is a lawyer, he could have easily stated he didn't know, wasn't sure, had no medical expertise to comment etc.
He didn't, he confidently passed judgement and was plain wrong.
To my knowledge he has never revisited the statement and admitted he he was wrong.

He is as much as product of his education as many in the Tory party. Amazing self confidence with often minimal reason.

I think Lammy too. He's thick. You can only hide that for so long

That's just plain nasty.

Blahblah34 · 10/07/2024 12:55

What's the evidence of Lammy being thick? Didn't he play an absolute blinder getting Starmer a meeting with Biden at D Day commemoration?

Yupthatsit · 10/07/2024 12:56

This thread just seems in really bad taste. These are real people with families and real people who might see these messages. Imagine if it was you.

RJnomore1 · 10/07/2024 12:57

Actually I don’t know the age of the op but I can see how some people up to mid to late 30s don’t remember how a functional government works and think this sort of one in one out constantly is completely normal…

A masters from Harvard doesn't say thick to me

A degree of anything does not make you intelligent. Some of the thickest people I know have a wealth of 'degrees' and qualifications.

He's educated. That does not make him intelligent. Sooner people realise this, the better!

samedifferent · 10/07/2024 12:59

Is it also a job requirement for Rayner to cheat on her partner and punch the voters?

I think she has already cheated on her partner.
But to fair that is extremely common on all sides of the house.

I also am inclined to think if you don't want punched you shouldn't throw things at people. But I suspect being female she is much less likely to punch people, although I don't know?

A friend was at sixth form college with Lammy. She describes him as “thick” and “arrogant” and said loads of others did better than him academically, but he was selected to go to Harvard because of affirmative action.

How would she know? He did his masters there, he didn’t go from sixth form.

Zimunya · 10/07/2024 12:59

cardibach · 10/07/2024 12:38

Why did you think that though?
It’s a bizarre topic - why do you think any of them will lose their jobs anytime soon? Why do you seem so gleeful for it? Couldn’t you immediately tell what it would lead to - everyone’s prejudices spewing everywhere and an opportunity to criticise a new government for stuff they haven’t done yet 🤷‍♀️
It’s mind boggling.

In fairness, I am very positive about the new government, and I wish them well. I'm happy to see grown-ups in charge. The only person I have been critical about is David Lammy, and that was the case long before he was in the new government, and refers to his actions and comments before he became part of the new government (although I have no doubt he has the capability to add to the list whilst he is part of the new government now!) It is entirely possible to be supportive of the government as a whole, but still have reservations about certain ministers.

That’s gracious of you. They won’t do that.

l voted Labour and I’m totally happy with the cabinet. And the appointment of Jess Phillips. I just wish Emily Thornberry was in there.

Me too. This thread just shows how addicted people have become to political psychodrama. Hopefully those days have gone for a very long time.

Maybe he should have done the ‘university of life?’

I find intelligence and education are usually linked.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/07/2024 12:54

Well Boris Johnson seemed to think that being a philandering, corrupt, lying, lawbreaker was a requirement of the job - so overall I think we are in a better place.

My post wasn’t intended to be anything more than a gentle dig at Prescott. I have a soft spot for the man as it happens. He tells a great story about meeting a country squire-type on a train before the 1997 election who said he’d vote for him “because I like the cut of your jib”.

For you and Zonder to leap on this must be the ultimate in defensiveness and whataboutery.

Nightowl1234 · 10/07/2024 13:04

Why can’t people just get over this toxic, divisive culture? This is the work of 14 years of Tory rule - encouraging division and intolerance and malice. Nothing has even gone wrong yet and people are out sniping and smearing politicians. Give them a chance.

A masters from Harvard doesn't say thick to me

Quite. He's certainly not thick.

I rather like David Lammy, though I don't agree with him on everything.

RebelMoon · 10/07/2024 13:05

Whether Lammy is intelligent or stupid (in my opinion it's possible to be both) I fully expect it won't be long before he puts his foot in it and is forced to resign. Suspect he'll be an embarrassment to this country.

It was a dig at The Tories actually but whatever

Grmumpy · 10/07/2024 13:07

If someone goes I hope Jess Phillips gets a cabinet post. She seems outstanding to me.

FinalCeleryScheme · 10/07/2024 13:08

I don’t think this thread was started with any intention to attack Labour or be nasty to people. CurlewKate has (at last) been clear that she thinks Lammy may have to go after he makes an impulsive comment, not because he’s no good.

I don’t agree - I think he’ll be awful as Foreign Secretary - but I think Starmer will prioritise stability and continuity over achievement and talent. That wouldn’t be a bad policy.

ElaineMBenes · 10/07/2024 13:08

What's your criteria for "not thick"?

Someone who doesn't think men can grow a cervix

CassieMaddox · 10/07/2024 13:11

MrHarleyQuin · 10/07/2024 12:28

There will probably be three Tory leaders and all five Reform MP will have behaved inappropriately and had to resign before anyone in government has to resign.

My money is on this

Oh ffs. Nobody thinks they can "grow" one. You're being ludicrous and his opinion on trans issues has nothing to do with his intelligence. It's a personal opinion.

CassieMaddox · 10/07/2024 13:13

rumblegrumble · 10/07/2024 12:32

Fingers crossed both Lammy and Mahmood are out quickly, they're both completely unsuitable for their roles. In fact, I'd struggle to think of positions they're more unsuited to - someone who has publicly attacked many of our allies' leaders (which is stupid behaviour for any politician) being made foreign secretary? Seriously?! Someone who's been involved in pro-terrorism marches given responsibility for prisons and justice?! Lammy's disgusting comments on women and his very obvious general ignorance just make this even more of a terrible joke. I'm already cringing hard at the thought of him representing us on the world stage.

He didn't make any "disgusting comments on women".

He said there were members of the Conservative party and the Labour Party who were like dinosaurs, hoarding their rights.

It's been blown up by anti-left into "woman hating" and its not really a fair representation.

Is this thread going to turn into another antl-trans thread? Over and over again.

Funny how any mention of protecting women's rights is pitched as "anti trans" Tells you all you need to know about what "trans rights" are!
