I'm hoping the whole lot of them, not one inspires any confidence at all.

Who would you like to see in the cabinet?

A friend was at sixth form college with Lammy. She describes him as “thick” and “arrogant” and said loads of others did better than him academically, but he was selected to go to Harvard because of affirmative action.

A) he didn't go to a sixth form college, he went to the sixth form of a CofE school as a chorister.

B) he went from sixth form to SOAS, not Harvard. Harvard he attended to do a masters a number of years later, having already graduated, done the BVC and been called to the bar. So even if your friend was at sixth form with him, she would have no clue what happened as regards his getting into Harvard.

C) your friend could have no way of knowing the basis on which Harvard chose to make an offer to Lammy.

Conclusion: this is BS.

I’m northern. They are both thick.
Angela is only there to placate the looney lefties.

Actually I thought she's there because she was voted into her position by the grassroots of the Labour party? I'm not a great fan but clearly the majority of the Labour party supported her and I certainly don't see all members as loony lefties.

David Lammy obviously has academic ability but honestly how smart are you when you think men can grow a cervixes, that is painfully ignorant. Really woeful.

My dh went to a highly academic selective boys’ school but I’ve discovered over the years that he’s utterly clueless about biology. It was considered a ‘girls’’ subject, so unless the boys were intending to be medics it was hardly touched.

I’ve had to explain to dh such basics as photosynthesis and the function of a kidney! And more recently I’m afraid he did think it might be possible for a man to grow a cervix… 😩
It’s not that he’s thick - he has a lot of letters after his name.

I went to an academic girls public school and did less than one term of biology. If you had an IQ in triple figures you were expected to do the other sciences and only the Domestic Science stream (i.e. everybody who was considered less academic) did biology. So anybody with a brain didn't learn to cook or learn anything in Biology beyond the amoeba and a little about the reproductive and digestive system of rabbits. There are definite gaps in my education!
My husband went through the grammar school system but went to many different institutions as his father was in the Admiralty. He says that he did the Tudors, Romans and Egyptians many times but knows nothing about any other periods in History.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2024 14:16

I went to a girls grammar and physics, chemistry and biology were taught as separate subjects. I've often been surprised how little many people know about their own bodies. Didn't do any cooking though.

Yes, my daughter's selective school did separate sciences too, so much better. She did do some basic cookery too, which has stood her in good stead, though some parents at the school thought it was a waste of time to learn how to cook at all. My boys went to a comprehensive and actually learned enough cookery to keep themselves alive when they left home.

MairifaeInsch · 12/07/2024 14:25

It’s because Starmer likes puppets who will do what he wants without question. He flattered Anas Sarwar, the leader of Labour in Scotland, by inviting him to London. He’s being feted as if he’s the FM of Scotland, which he is not.

Apart from areas such as housing, certain transport, health, education, economy, justice, rural affairs, housing, environment, social services, consumer advocacy and advice, certain taxes and benefits, agriculture, forestry, etc etc…

All issues devastated by the central UK government cutting billions from local government funding.

swimsong · 12/07/2024 14:44

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 07:09

Have a think about that. Labour has been in Govt in…?

Not 14 years - but the last decade has seen non Tory Govts elsewhere

You do know that Westminster still rules over all the UK, don't you?

dottiehens · 12/07/2024 14:46

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/07/2024 11:20

Why is he ‘thick?’

I know everyone on MN likes to dislike him.

l like him, and Angela Raynor. She’s just what the country needs.

According to you what is what the country needs that AR will deliver?

SirChenjins · 12/07/2024 15:01

swimsong · 12/07/2024 14:42

All issues devastated by the central UK government cutting billions from local government funding.

Not quite how it works - and Westminster doesn't rule on the key areas the SNP have systematically destroyed.

This is made up, presumably because you are racist.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2024 15:14

It's certainly highly unpleasant to suggest that he was offered a place at Harvard because he's black.

newnamethanks · 12/07/2024 15:14

And reported as such to MNHQ who have evidently decided to leave it up. Its libellous. I think I'll forward it to Lammys office. He's a lawyer and will know what to do with it.

It's unpleasant and also untrue. He didn't go to Harvard straight from sixth form it's obviously nonsense.

Anotherlurkingmale · 12/07/2024 15:50

Bit of a silly thread so soon after the election, need to wait for the dust to settle. Lammy has unjustifiably had lot of unwarranted stick on the thread. Cast your mind back when Boris was foreign secretary and screwed up the release of the Iranian hostage, I don't see Lammy making a catastrophic gaffe like that.

As for Rayner there's a lot of snobbery and some sexism towards her - really seems to get up the backs of many to see someone like her in a position of power - I think she's great and rooting for her to prove the doubters wrong - she has a challenging position though.

I thought as leader of opposition Starmer made a few unforced errors though in his first week as PM has looked pretty sure footed. No idea on sackings etc for future but I reckon there'll be tensions between treasury and other departments which may lead to resignation down the line

DuncinToffee · 12/07/2024 15:54

Angela Rayner is not only Deputy Prime Minister, she is also Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government

And me. Though the candidates were very strong. I went to hustings in Cardiff. They all spoke really well (I managed not to be distracted by regional accents).

What’s the point of devolution then? Is it completely impotent as a means of government?
