If we relate this to 1997, then the Tories are going to go through a few leaders before they can even dare to hope to dream of being in power.

The reduced parliamentary party also lends itself to much more internecine debates. Fewer MPs needed to boot the leader.

They'll also have to work out their position on Brexit. Because as the rejoin mood music gets louder, doubling down on it isn't really a vote winner. Especially in opposition.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2024 11:50

Really the Conservatives would benefit from calming the fuck down and going away for a bit.

Caretaker leader whilst they thrash around blaming everyone else. Let the indignant fury burn itself out before making some thoughtful, strategic choices.

They won't.
And I'm sure the Mail and Telegraph will hustle them into the hands of the hard right.

You mean the two papers that pretty much greased the slipway to oblivion ?

Will Selfs "Quantity Theory of Insanity"* really was just field research.

*A book I would urge all to read.

L1ttledrummergirl · 07/07/2024 11:55

Blimey, a lot to wake up to this morning.

Re Badenoch, if Reform win that seat in a rerun, that puts them on 6 with the additional funding. What's the lesser of the two?

If reform have lied on the ballot papers by fielding candidates that don't exist, surely those that seconded the "candidates" should be prosecuted.

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2024 11:58

PMSL at an actual quote from a thread on AIBU

They might have won all those seats but it's hardly a huge mandate

Some people are fucking stupid and I will always call it out.

tobee · 07/07/2024 12:13

I'm on holiday so haven't properly read the whole thread.

Re France situation, was talking to a Francophile friend the other day who said that Jordan Bardella, the young president of RN, le Pen party, is very popular with women. Which is more unusual with far right parties, who usually appeal more to men.

Presumably these women fancy him which is a brilliant way to vote.

I'm hoping that occasional comments on here noting that some young people are attracted to Reform is just about being rebellious, anarchic, edgy and something they grow out of.

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2024 12:13

What's funny is that they are pretending not to understand the influence of tactical voting. They were out strategised even by the L/Ds!

But the underlying message is 1) the Conservatives are the rightful government in all circumstances and despite performance and b) now that Thursday is over & the British public have carelessly meted out its punishment, the game is over and they should be brought back on to the pitch.

It has quite Russian or maybe Rwandan vibe, there is only one correct political choice.

If Braverman is elected leader there is no way they will win in 2029.

I bet she won't be though.

I’m not so sure. I personally think they’ll move further to the right over the next five years and will have to lose another election before they see sense. Basically the same trajectory as Labour.

user8800 · 07/07/2024 11:06

Btw, did any of you see 50p Lee win?

His body language and whole demeanor was OFF...ds and I both commented on it

Maybe he thought he'd lose? Get on the Tzv/after dinner circuit gravy train like farage etc al?

He looked grumpy and bored. I wonder what's going on there?🤔

SerendipityJane · 07/07/2024 12:19

Niche 80s reference The comments are well worth a scroll...

(btw, who on earth did Keir Start look like in that pic from uni days ? Was that a Tears for Fears look ?)

I hate to say this, but I don't think the Tory membership will ever vote a person of colour in over a white person. Remember it chose Truss over Sunak.

I think Streeting is not very popular?

It’s different now they’ve been trounced. My bloke seems pretty unusual in understanding that they need to move to the centre. It’s really interesting, in the 26 years we’ve been together it’s only in the last few months that we’ve been able to discuss politics sensibly. His view is that it’s not really his party anymore and they had it coming.

Sorry for that - I normally hate “my DH” posts! 🥺

My friend lives in France.

She says it’s the young he’s most popular with. They are massive on Tiktok apparently. Huge following.

No need for apologies, it is interesting to know how moderate Tory voters are feeling.

Why would you go to minor injuries if you couldn't breathe?

I am impressed that someone who is struggling to breathe has managed to walk into a minor injuries clinic and then have a conversation with someone on an intercom.

People I have been with who are struggling to breathe are barely speaking, perhaps the odd work, and certainly not walking anywhere.

To be fair, someone who doesn't exist might have trouble breathing...

Remember the slur against Starmer when he suggested he'd keep Fridays special ?

Daily Mail now having kittens because he too a call from Biden after 6pm

"STARMER BREAKS FIRST PLEDGE" is the rather stretched headline.

This actually made me snort over my (non-Rishi) sandwich!
Straws...clutching...much?

NoDishiForRishi · 07/07/2024 16:06

Apparently JoJo the Starmer family cat will be moving into number 10. I do hope he and Larry get along! Larry is hands down my favourite Downing Street resident, can't have him being upset.

BIossomtoes · 07/07/2024 16:17

Larry looked pretty sanguine with all the comings and goings on Friday.
