What? I hope you're not referring to us Brits as immigrants jelly, whatever next? We are only ever ex-pats.

absquatulize · 06/07/2024 14:54

From the BBC live feed, I have been out this morning, this is from the presser. Starmer replies by saying that the government's mindset has already changed.

I do not think we can overstate how important this is on so many levels. If his ministers are able to set clear and consistent directions for their departments they will be so much more effective than they have been. If the mindset is different to those who need the government most - eg those on PIPs that could be massive, even if the money doesn't change. If the mindset is different when talking to our friends and neighbours in the EU and so on.

Also surely the Tories have given up by now on Keir doesn't have a plan. It is already abundantly clear that he and his team have been doing a huge amount of planning.

absquatulize · 06/07/2024 14:54

Also will we at last as taxpayers get some value out of Boris' little used press suite?

Haven't ventured into one of these threads before, so I assume I have to pay more tax?

Very, very happy with the results. Better than I dared dream/hope for.

Lovely black cats! Tax well and truly paid 😻

I've just caught up with the press conference.

Keir Starmer's a bloody breath of fresh air isn't he.

Has it escaped the Mail's knowledge that three of the four countries in its picture not subscribing to read the whole article Hmm - France, Italy and Sweden - are in the EU and that the Mail's support for a hard Brexit means that UK citizens those that couldn't blag an extra EU passport can't just up sticks and go there Confused

And that Australia too has strict immigration rules? Confused

I feel the need to clarify that I didn’t pay to subscribe 😂 just wanted a quick 👀 at the other side of the rubicon!

Just watched it and it's a refreshing change.

I love this from Jonathan Pie. Not what I was expecting, but brilliantly done. https://x.com/JonathanPieNews/status/1809138738309566903?t=CD8-dl_BuF_6Gi23csS_zQ&s=19 vr

He really is isn’t he. Answered the questions in a clear polite way. He seemed so much more confident than any of the debates.
im really hopeful for the future

Jellycatspyjamas · 06/07/2024 15:11

Very, very happy with the result. The SNP getting a hammering is a happy bonus. Tax attached in the form of a very tired pup.

Where was it? I wouldn't mind catching up if it's somewhere I can watch it.

I just watched it on Sky’s YouTube channel.

SerendipityJane · 06/07/2024 15:26

The Tories are free to pick another clown as leader if they want. After all, it's not like they've shown much appetite for competence.

However, quoting myself, we are now through the looking glass (very sly cat reference there 😀) What was is no more. With an articulate, well briefed and backed PM, the Tories will need a really really really sharp leader to make any headway in debate. Being Boris in opposition is not going to pull them back from the opposition.

Early signs are they may as well have made Liz Truss leader again, and be done with it. They missed the clue train. Which is odd - you'd have thought losing 251 seats might have made some wonder.

BIossomtoes · 06/07/2024 15:32

You would have thought it. Unfortunately the fact that those who survived include Jenrick, the coven and various other right wingers may make them think that’s the way forward. The five new Reform MPs also encourage that argument. I wonder if they’ll have to emulate the Labour Party and lose an election with an unelectable leader before they realise that elections are won from the centre.

newnamethanks · 06/07/2024 15:41

Somehow, God forbid, Farage is going to slither his way into that vacancy now he's in the Commons. Look at the Tory dross. He will be the Voice of the Right and the Man of the Right and he will get there. Not immediately but soon. Makes my blood run cold.

Simon Evans on the New Quiz suggestion that Farage should have been given a peerage 5 years ago was actually quite a good one.

Still, let's see how he manages to not turn up at parliament after the sugar rush of being elected. At some point the remaining 4 MPs might twig that they are putting the hours in while he's still on his QT retainer.

placemats · 06/07/2024 15:49

I doubt very much that Tice will put the hours in. Anderson might but his ego will be shattered so he might well defect back to the Tories.

Thanks for the thread!
How my friend and I agreed we felt post GE, even on a blustery seaside walk this morning for tax

@itsgettingweird I don't think Starmer was making a point about comprehensive schools in appointing his Cabinet. These have been his front bench a long time. Plus, only 23% of all MPs this time round attended independent schools.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 06/07/2024 15:59

I don't think I've ever felt quite so relieved and emotional about a GE outcome. KS is already demonstrating the kind of leadership needed. It's going to take time to turn things around, but I'm hopeful.

RobinStrike · 06/07/2024 15:59

He chose his best candidates, otherwise he wouldn't have appointed any from independents?

MissyGez · 06/07/2024 15:59

I've been a long time lurker as sometimes these threads move fast and I can't keep up, I feel I have learnt a lot from some knowledgeable posters on here, so thank you to all that post.

I did not think that Labour would be much different to the Tories as I think they will be limited what they can do due the state of the economy, but I am now feeling more hopeful. I was disappointed that Reform got 5 seats but thought this was interesting when comparing to UKIP, the 'RW vote share down by 11.5% points'.

I am surprised at the selective schooling being so low and Russell/Oxbridge Uni - I expected them to mostly be grammar school like KS.

I really hope it spells good change for education at least.

If anyone has a link to his speech that would be great but I feel quite up to date from these threads as we are only a day in 😁. Anyone want to take a punt on what the first Bill they will pass will be? I'm relieved Rwanda has been scrapped already but I wonder what their first rubber stamp will be used on?
