Why conservative voters handle election outcomes better than Labour voters

It's been 14 years since Labour and Remainers have won a large vote, but you wouldn't know it. Every panel show seems determined to tell Conservative and Brexit voters how stupid they are, as if those doing the bashing are the majority. For instance, shows like BBC's Question Time and Have I Got News For You have often featured heated debates where Conservative and Brexit supporters are frequently criticised.

Now that they’ve actually won a vote, the annoyance will surely be even louder. In the 2019 general election, the Conservatives won a significant majority, securing 365 seats compared to Labour's 202. Similarly, the 2016 Brexit referendum saw 52% of voters choosing to leave the EU, yet the aftermath was marked by continuous debates and criticisms from Remain supporters.

I can't see Conservative voters taking the same stance as Labour voters have for years and telling their opposition how stupid they are.

I guess Conservative voters must be the bigger people.

Stats don't back this up.

Nor does my lived experience!

Or mine. 71 next month and according to @hamstersarse still haven’t grown up.

I see that all the Tory supporters on here are still conforming to the stereotypical Tory thinking that anyone who isn't a Tory is a loony leftie.

There are extremes in every political party. Not every Labour voter is a militant left wing extremist. But this doesn't suit the Tory narrative does it?

@RedRobyn2021 in reply to your questions - we are comfortable but not wealthy. No, I don't usually vote Labour but I did this time because our candidate was the best option and I wanted a change of government.

I am under no illusion that the new government is a magic bullet. They have a lot to unravel after 14 years of Tory rule.

and yes, most people who voted for Brexit were not well educated..

I worked with out local university on a governmental report on this. Brexit was a vote of education. The lower the level of education the more likelihood of voting for Brexit.

I think the answer to the OPs questions lie in the manner in which the Conservatives campaigned.

Why conservative voters handle election outcomes better than Labour voters

But Jeremy Corbyn
Keir's Beer
A donkey
Angela's house
Do they know what a woman is.
Calling people illegal.
They have no plan.
Supermajority

If your campaign is based entirely in spouting rubbish about your opponent rather than putting forward a positive programme to improve the country, you probably don't actually care that much about the result.

ingenvillvetavardukoptdintroja · 07/07/2024 08:52

Accepting the result? Reform are all over social media bleating on about FPTP being a scam - they are clearly trying to whip up people to believe the election was rigged. More misinformation. They've known how the voting system works for a long time, they could have tailored their strategy like the lib dems did.

We literally have shit in our rivers.... of course people are angry!

Oh so do I!

cakeorwine · 07/07/2024 14:51

In 2015, UKIP got 13% of the vote and 1 seat.
The Lib Dems got 8% and 8 seats
The Green party got 4% and 1 seat.

That was 8 years ago. You'd have thought there would have been discussion of FPTP and PR then from UKIP.

RitaAndFrank · 07/07/2024 16:03

Ah yes. The far right in America was a bastion of calm and gracious defeat at the Capitol after Trump was kicked out. Oh… wait 🤔

Op, has it not occurred to you that maybe the anger and insults from the left (while not exactly charming in their nature) are driven by a build up of fourteen years of having its own voices unheard after a series of electoral defeats? Perhaps if Labour can now have 14 years in power we’ll see how stoic and calm your lot are feeling by the end.

Anyway, one glance at the hateful and whingeing comments on the Daily Mail online will make you realise that the right is certainly not made up the band of dignified and stoic heroes that you think it is.

Labour and remainers?

Cameron was the remainer Corbyn was the leaver

Corbyn claimed he voted Remain

I agree. Conservatives tend to be a lot more stoical than those on the left and much less inclined to vitriolic rhetoric.

Oh yes of course. That's why they (still) call us Remoaners, or leftards. Really pleasant people.

CheshireCat1 · 07/07/2024 17:55

Judging by some posts on other threads it’s half a dozen of one and six of the other

Conservatives did not all vote to leave. I voted Reform but also voted to stay in the EU.

Nadine Dorries' performance on Channel 4 on Thursday night didn't show any basic manners never mind how to be 'the bigger person'. She ruined what could have been a good debate. Even Emily Maitlis got fed up of her and finally put her back in her box. So no... don't agree with you. OP. There are those who can be gracious in defeat and those that can't, from all parties.

I began to think Nadine Dorries was either drunk or on drugs, her pandering to Boris made me feel sick, she was either shagging him or knew where all the bodies were kept & had something on him.

Very, very generally, Conservatives are pragmatists, Labour are idealists.
