How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?

Did Rishi move his stuff out of number 10 before election day or did he do it today? I am moving house at the moment and I can’t imagine how they do it so quickly? I read Michelle Obama’s book and in America there is a long time between the election and the new president talking over and that gives them time to plan the move but it still went pretty quick.

they are just offices surely?

Seriously?? You must know there’s apartments there that they live in? Did you miss the whole “Boris decorating saga”??

They don’t live there full time. Its really just an office with accommodation. If they have pets they’ll stay in their usual home(s).

Lots of PMs do live there full time - Boris did, Tony Blair did, Maggie T did etc. same for the chancellors in no 11

There's a small flat at the top.

It’s not that small. It’s 2 floors and is basically the same size as a house! It’s not a flat as you would imagine a flat.

Dotcomma · 06/07/2024 23:36

Well in this day & age and after all the lining their own pockets fiascos and especially after Boris's shenanigans - the whole lot needs an overhaul. I wish they'd stop being allowed to make money through their private companies and instead give the work and the earnings to the thousands of people struggling to keep afloat. You never see a poor polititian. No need for them to work hard to earn a decent living, they're all rolling in it, and the bloody hangers on 🤬🤬

Jeannie88 · 07/07/2024 00:06

I'm sure they will have the most expensive packing service and not have to as much as us common folk. Each room will have labels for all items then be set up in one of whichever other houses they choose. Xx

Risgi enrolled his kids in California schools mid April.

How does anyone know this?

piscofrisco · 07/07/2024 07:26

The Cameron's lived at no 11 and redecorated it, including a new kitchen. I distinctly remember it because I liked the cupboards, which were a sort of marigold colour. There was a sort of open plan kitchen/dining/living area. Lots of books. I saw it in an article in the Sunday times style section. She had good taste Sam Cam. In clothes and interiors anyway.

Camerons inside number 10

Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Our last full pack/unpack move was about £1K, three men, and the van travelled about 60 miles.

A few miles south of the shire 3 years ago, £1800 to pack and unpack 4 bed house and move a mile!! Worth every penny!

We moved ourselves out of our 1 bed flat 30 years ago and after that I said the only way I’d ever move again would be with a packing/unpacking service, and we’ve moved that way twice since then

CurlewKate · 07/07/2024 08:08

@MsMajeika "One of my friends once paid for a moving service in which they pack up your things for you, move them and then unpack in your new place (with some instruction, of course). I imagine they do something similar. It sounds like bliss!"
My MIL did this. It was amazing. Except that all her shoes, her handbag and her phone ended up in storage!

That's Number 11, the article is mistitled.

Some of the stuff we see on the day a new PM takes office is just for show. It’s put on for the cameras. The reality is that senior politicians have lives & families & kids in school like everyone else so that has to be taken into account in their living arrangements.

My understanding is that Skunak’s family didn’t live in Downing st. But he did spend some weeknights there. They are so rich that they own several homes, including one in London where they actually live & a massive mansion in his constituency in North Yorkshire.

The Starmers’ family home is in Kentish Town, a couple of miles from Downing st. I have read that Victoria & their teenagers aren’t keen on moving into Downing st, so maybe they will remain at home. Money also plays a part, of course. Given that they are nowhere near as rich as the Sunaks, the benefits of moving into Downing st & renting out their house for £ thousands a month might be irresistible. I believe that’s what the Blairs did.

Just looked it up. They are not short of a bob or 2, a millionaire many many times over. He also owns land worth loads of millions too. Very down with the people !!!

turnipsandtiaras · 07/07/2024 08:57

@Jasmineinthegarden wait and see, I guarentee that's where they'll spring up soon

Zonder · 07/07/2024 08:59

FeetLikeFlippers · 06/07/2024 20:48

Well I doubt they do any of it themselves - especially that Fishy Rishi who probably has servants. Also his real home is a bloody great mansion in Yorkshire so I don’t suppose he had much stuff of his own at number 10 anyway.

I'm just going to repeat that his REAL home is not a mansion in Yorkshire. Until fairly recently his girls went to a private school in South Kensington and the Sunaks had a house there. That would have been quite a commute from Yorkshire.

Is this Kier Starmer, seem his net worth is around 7.7million, not sure how that compares with others when they were PM, like Blair, Cameron, Johnson and May, usually after being PM it probably goes up. I haven't included Sunak as his family's wealth/net worth is off the scale.

poshsnobtwit · 07/07/2024 09:12

For those that got a packing service, how much did it cost? I moved recently and the packing nearly killed me. In saying that though do they just throw everything into boxes, with no organization?

Edited

My point was that Downing Street was never his never his own home where he would have had his own furniture etc that would need to be moved. Yes he has a house in Kensington as well as a bloody great mansion in Yorkshire!

Ah, now that makes a lot of sense. California is probably about half way between their homes in London and North Yorkshire, so handy for commuting from either direction Grin

How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?
RosesAndHellebores · 07/07/2024 10:10

Not for 9/10 years - and with hindsight we unpacked. It took them a day to pack and they loaded most stuff except for half the boxes: the beds we used, a couple of sofas and the TV, and a few other essential bits, onto van one, van two came back first thing the following morning. It was about £2500 I think from memory (large house and many many books). Realistically it was a two day move with packing.

If properties are more or less empty at 8am on moving day, it facilitates professional cleaners coming in and I insist that's written into the contract.

Tips: essential documents including passports packed separately and kept with you.

Kettle, mugs, bottles of water, bog roll, hoover, bucket, cloths, flash, wipes, packed into boot, in advance.

Put clean bedding on beds the day before packing starts. Bed linen for each bed packed into a box left on the bed and clearly labelled. This box finds its way to the correct bed in the new house.

Book cats/dogs into boarding kennels two days before the move and for two/three days afterwards.

If it's a big move, consider booking an hotel for the night of move in day.

DeerOhDear · 07/07/2024 10:19

I understand pm and family not wanting to live there but I thought the main reasons family moved in was security?
It's all set up for security. How would they be kept safe in other random houses, or perhaps they have it anyway as Rishi wife issues sometimes rich?

I imagine they have people to do it for them! When they popped off to the palace, the lovely Akshata didn't look like a woman who had spent the day chucking pots and pans into boxes and cleaning skirting boards. I don't know if the family even lived above the shop. It's not compulsory, is it?

Nope.

I believe the Blairs actually lived in number 11 (they are connected) because the flat in number 10 is quite small.

They absolutely do not chuck it in boxes-ours was well and logically packed, well protected with white paper on every item…kitchen eg was
packed cupboard by cupboard so I could have replicated what was in each cupboard in the new house
Clothes were hung in “packing wardrobes” on their hangers, and chests of drawers, the drawers were taken out complete with contents, to load them onto the lorry, reassembled on the lorry and the in reverse off the lorry, and policed in the appropriate rooms, with beds and furniture reassembled.

They absolutely swarmed over the house, I think there were 7 or 8 of them and the most helpful thing I did was make tea and keep out of their way!

The price won’t be relevant now as it was 3 years ago and obviously area dependent, but I think the packing was about £500 of the price, and we didn’t go with cheapest movers

poshsnobtwit · 07/07/2024 11:47

@Jeezitneverends that sounds amazing and definitely worth an extra £500!
