How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?

Did Rishi move his stuff out of number 10 before election day or did he do it today? I am moving house at the moment and I can’t imagine how they do it so quickly? I read Michelle Obama’s book and in America there is a long time between the election and the new president talking over and that gives them time to plan the move but it still went pretty quick.

As I understand it from the TV coverage today, the entire family have to move in to Downing Street because of security issues. I haven't heard this confirmed about Starmer's family though, but usually they can't protect the PM's family sufficiently well in an ordinary house - obviously they become a target - and anyway it is too disruptive for the neighbours for them to stay in their home. I feel sorry for their teens tbh but glad they are keeping them out of the limelight.

Maybe Rishi's wife could afford security to be able to live in one of her own houses and he'd pop round to watch the satellite.

I think you call it 'help'. Or 'aid'. Possibly even 'assistance '.

We did an international move when I was a child and it was all organised by my Dad's company which was an international corporation. It was really surprising because men just came in vans and packed everything and took it, including the cat. The cat had been measured in advance and the man came with a wooden box that was made to measure, and just took her away. I don't remember whether the cat arrived before or after us. I think moving house with money is very different.

I've also done the penniless move with begging for boxes at the back of ASDA and I think that is nicer tbh. More privacy and more fun with friends, and less being told that you have to go, and whether you can or cannot take the cat.

I’m sorry, but something about ‘the cat had been measured in advance’ really amused me there Grin

If you pay for movers to pack/move, it can be done in hours. A family member had them come in and pack. Two bedroom flat. Two hours. They moved the stuff and put it up in the new flat in two hours. It does cost a lot, but it seems worth it.

plimbow · 05/07/2024 21:22

I'm sure I've seen Rishi being interviewed outside his london mews house not long ago,

diddl · 05/07/2024 21:23

When we moved here Pickfords had us packed in two days.

First day everything except beds & a few bits & bobs for the next day.

Gonners · 05/07/2024 21:23

Over a period of 14 years, we relocated "permanently" (in the sense of not having a home to go back to) from London to Faraway Country A, to European Country B (with 3-month temporary moves to two other countries, one of which was not in Europe, though we didn't move out of our home), to European Country C and finally back to the UK. (With hindsight, that last move was a HUGE mistake!) Fortunately I was raised as an army brat and you just get on with it. This is why removal companies were invented. I reckon that with the help available to an ex-PM, I could organise a move out of Downing Street within a day.

One of my friends once paid for a moving service in which they pack up your things for you, move them and then unpack in your new place (with some instruction, of course). I imagine they do something similar. It sounds like bliss!

Sorry to derail the thread - I used this service when I moved and it was awful. They broke stuff, lost stuff, and when they unpacked it took me months to find everything. Would never ever do it again.

It took me much longer to sort out their mess than it would have done to just pack and unpack myself.

Reputable moving firm with great reviews, but they were terrible.

We’ve had work pay for full service moves twice as they were international postings. It is heaven.

We’re planning to move within the UK soon and have decided to treat ourselves to it again.

So a standard moving company then???

It may be standard for you, but we could never afford it! We've always had to get a man with a van to do our removals which meant packing and unpacking ourselves.

We've always done this - it's a "full pack" service. Worth every penny

Oh wow, that sounds awful! Some stuff is just irreplaceable even if insurance covers the financial aspect 😟

RosesAndHellebores · 05/07/2024 21:13

That's pretty bog standard. I packed once. Never again. It is worth every penny and not that much in the scheme of things also if the movers pack and so.ething gets broken their insurance covers it.

This. We have moved a lot and rarely pack. It's about £1k for a 3-4 bed house and worth every penny if you can afford it.

£1k for them to pack, move and unpack?? Bargain! It's A LOT more than that where I am!

Do the Starmers have a pet?

That can be a tricky one with Larry asserting his dominance as chief cat.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 05/07/2024 21:44

They won't move out all in one day. They (Rishi and family) will just go through the motions, and make it look like they're leaving. They will probably pop back for the rest of their stuff over the coming week. Also, as a pp said, the PM doesn't live at No 10 full time anyway.

ButterCrackers · 05/07/2024 21:45

They must have staff who organise the whole thing for them. They also have other houses so they might not have all belongings in number 10 and 11. I suppose it’s packed and moved and cleaners do the cleaning afterwards.

Gonners · 05/07/2024 21:45

Feh! To me pretty much all stuff is only "stuff". I'm careful with important paperwork and items of sentimental value, but that's about it. I still remember my mother's dramatics when we moved back from Singapore and "ALL my jewellery" went missing from the crates. Allegedly. I was 11 years old but even then had the sense not to ask what the censored she was thinking, letting the packers crate it up and put it on a ship. With the benefit of hindsight, I don't believe it was true.

I have moved animals too. The box dimensions are for their safety and comfort.

I will be booking that service when I buy my lottery win house. I would pack a personal bag and that's it.

If you imagine rishi has been asking for boxes in Facebook then you're wrong.

It really isn't expensive, and not just for the Rishi's of this world, no need for a lottery win.

It cost us £400 extra for a full pack at one end and unload the other end, including all the packing materials. It was so so worth it, we didn't need to lift a finger - there was only one chap who packed everything, he whipped through the house at breakneck speed, he was done in 3 hours. The other advantage is that, for that type of service, they are fully insured, so any breakages they replace old for new. There wasn't a single breakage!

When I talked about this at the beginning of the thread, I meant that my friend had everything unpacked too - not just unloaded. Books put in the bookcases, stuff put away in drawers, etc. Is that what you mean?

I've had them pack for us before but unpacking is a nightmare and takes months 😓 I'd love to walk into my new home with everything already in its place!

They don’t live there full time. Its really just an office with accommodation. If they have pets they’ll stay in their usual home(s).
