How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?

Did Rishi move his stuff out of number 10 before election day or did he do it today? I am moving house at the moment and I can’t imagine how they do it so quickly? I read Michelle Obama’s book and in America there is a long time between the election and the new president talking over and that gives them time to plan the move but it still went pretty quick.

I listened to a podcast and they were saying that before the election they have talks with the person who maybe coming in and they discuss how they would have it set up etc so the aides know in advance how they want it. Imagine there will have been people in packing from when they did the exit poll

£1k for them to pack, move and unpack?? Bargain! It's A LOT more than that where I am!

Joy of the frozen north 🤣

Just what I was thinking - it's hardly unusual.

I didn't think it was usual to have your belongings completely unpacked and put away for you in your new home 🤷🏼‍♀️

Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Our last full pack/unpack move was about £1K, three men, and the van travelled about 60 miles.

Slightly off-topic, but I'm amazed at the amount of stuff they have to do on what must be no sleep at all.

I can't imagine the party leaders can sleep at all on the Thursday (probably not that easily in the week before either). Then they stay up all night to see how it all unfolds and, once they are declared the Prime Minister, they have to go and meet with the King (possibly having to travel some way to London from their constituency), finalise/announce their cabinet, call the US President and other world leaders, move in to 10 Downing Street (at least the basics), give speeches... plus probably lots of other expected tasks as well, all with the eyes of the country (and further afield) scrutinising their every word and action.

I couldn't even stay up too late to see the results on the telly, sitting on my sofa, without dozing off! Are they sponsored by heavy duty Red Bull or something?!

justasking111 · 05/07/2024 22:06

The couple we bought the house from had professional packers. The company actually stored a lot of it. On the day there were just a few bits left that they'd needed till the last minute. Very civilised.

As long as Rishi has packed his swimming bag, gym and tennis kit, he’ll be fine!

It was probably nothing more than rumour, but a number of people were suggesting that the Sunaks would be off to the USA, once his 'business' in the UK was complete.

Still, they're so rich, it's not like they'd need to sell their North Yorkshire pile to afford to move wherever they'd be going.

YorkshireLandlady · 05/07/2024 22:08

As a pub landlady, whenever I move I have to literally leave 1 still operating business & move into another operating business on the same day.
It is chaos & I always just pack an overnight bag & the animals into the car to move & pay a removal company to do a full pack/move/unpack of the flat above the pub.
Costs a small/large fortune but worth every penny to not have the stress, on top of all the other business stress.

Funkyfizz · 05/07/2024 22:09

Money.

Worried1987 · 05/07/2024 22:09

This brilliant. The sort of detail I wanted. I am moving house at the moment and I was trying to imagine how they did it all.

I wonder if number 10 still has the horrible decor that Boris and Carrie spent a fortune on.

I will be booking that service when I buy my lottery win house. I would pack a personal bag and that's it.

If you imagine rishi has been asking for boxes in Facebook then you're wrong.

We had never moved until we had a full service to move abroad. We then had a full service to move when abroad. I labelled up cupboards in the new house and when I arrived, everything was in place. When we moved back to the UK, we had full service at the leaving end but I got a bit of a shock when I had to unpack my own boxed at this end 😆. Definitely recommend full service.

diddl · 05/07/2024 21:23

When we moved here Pickfords had us packed in two days.

First day everything except beds & a few bits & bobs for the next day.

I never forgot our last PICKfords Move.
Same crew both days.
Supplied lunch, tea, refreshments plus cash £££ tips to whole crew on day 1.
DH's racing bikes were packed into van last.
Lorry got broken into at "locked+secured" Pickfords compound , all bikes stolen, nothing else.
Stupidly had no transit insurance.
Pickfords couldn't care less, fought for weeks for compensation.
Just seeing their company name 😡🤬, sorry to
derail post.

Humtum · 05/07/2024 22:18

Wonder if they gift any old decorations and furnishings to a charity - seems such a waste to change it all the time. Suppose it has to meet the taste of the new home owners!

I always think the same. Just yesterday, I was really grumpy in my low stress job because I hadn't slept well the previous night. Not no sleep, just not my usual 8 hours. Starmer and Sunak will have had little or probably no sleep last night and probably not much in previous nights either. I guess that's the job they sign up for, but yet another reason why I couldn't do it.

DancingNotDrowning · 05/07/2024 22:21

last time I moved, an army of people packed and then unpacked at the other end. Everything was laid out exactly as it had been in the previous house, except the pictures which were leant against walls rather than hung.

JohnTheRevelator · 05/07/2024 22:21

They have shit loads of people doing all the work for them.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/07/2024 22:36

Presumably they mean moving into the offices. Rather than moving out of the homes straight away. Hope Larry is ok, with the upheaval.

Clive Myrie and Laura Kuenssberg looked absolutely whacked come 8am, poor things; but at least their shift was coming to an end and other newsreaders and analysts could take over whilst they went home and crashed.

Maybe this is the ideal opening for a future PM who is one of a pair of identical twins: one does all the Thursday stuff and sleeps on the Friday, and the other does the opposite; and nobody need be any the wiser Grin

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 05/07/2024 22:42

It must also be a bit weird for all the people who work in 10 Downing Street. Not the political assistants, who would change over with the new PM, but the cooks, cleaners, servants, doorman etc. who would, presumably, just remain and keep on as normal.

I bet some of those people who've served a long time could tell some fascinating stories, were they not NDA-ed up to the eyeballs!

MrsArcher23 · 05/07/2024 22:48

I'm more interested in whether Mrs Starmer will be able to go back to work on Monday (or even the following week if she needs a few days break)

Contraryjane · 05/07/2024 22:49

You’ll have to ask Larry the Cat. He’s seen 7 Prime Ministers come and go.

Kovus · 05/07/2024 22:53

Michael Gove did it. For both of them. £5 each. While dancing and on acid.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 05/07/2024 22:56

If you google rishi sunak houses there's loads of articles on what property he owns.

He has 2 other London properties. His wife and youngest daughter (oldest is in boarding school) apparently don't even live at no10. He stays there week days and joins them at their 6 million pound London House at weekends. Weirdly they also have an apartment in santa monica.

Doubt he's got loads to move. It was never really 'home'. Obviously other PM's may be different. Though Starmer is loaded too so doubt he's wanting to live there with his family immediately. Especially as he keeps his children out of the public eye.
