How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?

Did Rishi move his stuff out of number 10 before election day or did he do it today? I am moving house at the moment and I can’t imagine how they do it so quickly? I read Michelle Obama’s book and in America there is a long time between the election and the new president talking over and that gives them time to plan the move but it still went pretty quick.

One of the Pms and Family lived next door might have been the Camerons.

It was the Blairs who lived at no 11 (usually the Chancellor’s residence) because it was bigger

I will be booking that service when I buy my lottery win house. I would pack a personal bag and that's it.

If you imagine rishi has been asking for boxes in Facebook then you're wrong.

I think that’s why he flew back early from the D-Day celebrations. So he could start assembling cardboard boxes.

florasl · 05/07/2024 20:49

When we were a military family the movers would pack and load our four bed house in a day and unpack everything into the new house next day. They didn’t unpack the boxes but the furniture was reassembled in the correct room and the boxes in the correct rooms too.

RobinStrike · 05/07/2024 20:56

I think the Cameron's did live there as I heard him talking in an interview about when Florence was a baby being able to pop upstairs between meetings to see her, and to see the kids at bedtimes.

they are just offices surely?

I don't know if Keir is planning. On moving his family in or if Rishi lived there
But im e sure there was a big thing about Tony Blair ,s family using number. 11 living accommodation as it was larger
And didn't some of baby Wilfred, s Toys get broken during party gate?
A garden swing or something ?

No they are flats well apartments that they do live in.

I don't think Rishis family lived there full time his kids won't be in a London school.

actually they do go to a London school (at least the youngest one still does, the older is now in boarding school) in South Ken.

but as the article says they have another (much larger!) London house as well as all their other properties, so I doubt his family actually 'live' in no.10 at all.

ThinWomansBrain · 05/07/2024 21:00

not esp. related, but I wonder if Johnson's gaudy wallpaper is still there?

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 05/07/2024 21:01

Yes, the packing up isn't done b the family but by profesionals. And of course, not all the furniture will be going - it's basically a furnished apartment. It's not that big a deal.

If you can afford it, you can pay movers to move you out in one day.

I imagine in this case, Starmer and family will not be sleeping there tonight anyway.

Mrsjayy · 05/07/2024 21:01

I thought they went to school .out of London.

Shinyandnew1 · 05/07/2024 21:01

They’ve got several houses so although they’ll have clothes and ‘stuff’ there, it’s not going to be like you or I moving home. They won’t have to clear 25 years of crap, move the washing machine and take down the curtains. I would imagine it won’t take the packers long to do!

radio4everyday · 05/07/2024 21:02

Now he's losing his PM salary he probably won't be able to afford anyone to help him pack.....hang on....................

he must be so pissed off that he kept his seat. He'd be on a plane to California by now otherwise.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 05/07/2024 21:04

My friends were relocated through his work from San Francisco to San Diego. The movers came, packed everything, a cleaning company came in, drove the items down and unpacked at the other end. I was 'helping' - in the end my friends and I went for coffee and bagels, had a stroll and hung out until they had to start driving down. If you have money, moving can be very easy!

Ozanj · 05/07/2024 21:08

They don’t live there as a family. I know Rishi’s family well - they said due to the girl’s education they and Akshata live elsewhere and even Rishi only stayed there when needed.

One of my friends once paid for a moving service in which they pack up your things for you, move them and then unpack in your new place (with some instruction, of course). I imagine they do something similar. It sounds like bliss!

We have done this a few times (company paid moves) one time we were moving abroad and the house contents had to be marked up 3 ways...one lot to stay in the house as we were renting it furnished, one lot to go into store in the Uk and one lot to be shipped to the USA...that was fun!! Yes its fast and much easier...still stressful though.

emilyelf · 05/07/2024 21:11

They use it as a hotel as they don't live there full time. In hotels you have a suitcase and toiletries which with all the staff they will move within the hour in a few suitcases.

So a standard moving company then???

That's pretty bog standard. I packed once. Never again. It is worth every penny and not that much in the scheme of things also if the movers pack and so.ething gets broken their insurance covers it.

Some of the stuff we see on the day a new PM takes office is just for show. It’s put on for the cameras. The reality is that senior politicians have lives & families & kids in school like everyone else so that has to be taken into account in their living arrangements.

My understanding is that Skunak’s family didn’t live in Downing st. But he did spend some weeknights there. They are so rich that they own several homes, including one in London where they actually live & a massive mansion in his constituency in North Yorkshire.

The Starmers’ family home is in Kentish Town, a couple of miles from Downing st. I have read that Victoria & their teenagers aren’t keen on moving into Downing st, so maybe they will remain at home. Money also plays a part, of course. Given that they are nowhere near as rich as the Sunaks, the benefits of moving into Downing st & renting out their house for £ thousands a month might be irresistible. I believe that’s what the Blairs did.

As I understand it from the TV coverage today, the entire family have to move in to Downing Street because of security issues. I haven't heard this confirmed about Starmer's family though, but usually they can't protect the PM's family sufficiently well in an ordinary house - obviously they become a target - and anyway it is too disruptive for the neighbours for them to stay in their home. I feel sorry for their teens tbh but glad they are keeping them out of the limelight.

Wedoourish · 05/07/2024 21:15

Am pretty sure that Rishi wasn’t packing his undies last night! Guessing the paid help did that!!!

TinySmol · 05/07/2024 21:17

Sunak knew he was toast last year.
Yesterday's result is no surprise.
All of them will have packed many weeks back.
A team of staff assist them.

I have done this when I have moved. It is worth every penny. If you can afford it, then I would heartily recommend it.

Behind every mediocre bloke, stands a well-organised crowd of minions.

LostAllMySocks · 05/07/2024 21:19

We did an international move when I was a child and it was all organised by my Dad's company which was an international corporation. It was really surprising because men just came in vans and packed everything and took it, including the cat. The cat had been measured in advance and the man came with a wooden box that was made to measure, and just took her away. I don't remember whether the cat arrived before or after us. I think moving house with money is very different.

I've also done the penniless move with begging for boxes at the back of ASDA and I think that is nicer tbh. More privacy and more fun with friends, and less being told that you have to go, and whether you can or cannot take the cat.

Dahliasrule · 05/07/2024 21:19

DD single mum, young twins, employed the movers to do the packing during her last move. Very swift, all done in the day and she is a bit of a collector. I don’t remember how much it was, but we were pleasantly surprised and well worth it. That was about 10 years ago. So I think professional movers would manage it easily as there probably won’t be so much personal stuff.
