How do Rishi and Keir manage to move house so quickly?

Did Rishi move his stuff out of number 10 before election day or did he do it today? I am moving house at the moment and I can’t imagine how they do it so quickly? I read Michelle Obama’s book and in America there is a long time between the election and the new president talking over and that gives them time to plan the move but it still went pretty quick.

Because they e got dozens of gofers

They haven’t really and the civil servants are not that, clearly. They simply hire a removal company like many others. Who pack and unpack, I’ve done it myself. No biggie.

they are just offices surely?

No, there is a flat 'above the shop.' The PM can live there if he wants to.

One of the Pms and Family lived next door might have been the Camerons.

I think the Blairs and the Browns might have swapped after the Blairs had baby 4. Have a feeling number 11 is bigger.

Jumpers4goalposts · 06/07/2024 18:33

One time we packed our whole house in 24hrs, I think it’s actually easier to do it like that. You didn’t have to think about whether you were going to need something or not. You just had to start at the top and pack everything as you went. I’m not sure it would be quick now, we’ve been here 8 years and the outbuilding as a disgrace lol

Spudley13 · 06/07/2024 19:00

Apparently they turn around the PMs office while they are visiting the King - one to resign and the other to receive His invitation to government.

No he doesn't. He lives in his own house in Kensington where his children go to school. He bought the Yorkshire house when he stood for election up there so he looked like he was interested.

Rishi's girls go to a boarding school in Buckinghamshire, I know one of their teachers.

BlueFlowers5 · 06/07/2024 19:08

There are so many decisions a PM has to take hourly and meetings, they have to live over the shop. Civil servants can't be whizzing out to other homes in London.
It can be done last minute.

Military family here. My husband has lived in almost as many houses as he is years old, and can do a full house pack (3 bed semi) in less than a day.

He’s an unusual case though 🤣

but it is possible!

My DH comes from a naval family, sometimes they were told to move on a Friday and start the new school/post on the Monday, often abroad. Transport and housing were provided and I gather that they simply kept their possessions to a minimum. He's still very good at moving now, half our possessions went into storage during our last complicated move and everything was eventually reunited five months later, after lockdown.
(A good removal company can pack up even quite a large house in a day).

Happyhappyday · 06/07/2024 19:46

If you use a moving service, they pack really quickly. We did once for an international move and we literally went out in the morning, came back in the evening and the flat was empty. And that was just a normal people service, not fancy and we didn’t do any prep beforehand, so they take your clothes out of the cupboards put into wardrobe boxes etc. Likewise they did the bulk of the unpacking and we were box free after a day. This was with a tiny baby too so we really weren’t doing anything to help!

Ok. A couple of years ago they were both at a private primary school in South Kensington.

Willmafrockfit · 05/07/2024 20:28

There are two flats. A big one above No 11 & a smaller one above No 10. It's not actually a terrace per se as it backs onto a small mansion which has been incorporated into the Downing St houses. Own furniture is used so not just moving toothbrushes!

Amiable · 06/07/2024 20:34

The last couple of times I’ve moved the moving company have done all the packing for me. It cost an extra £300 and was worth every single penny! It is honestly life changing. Everything is packed in a day, so no living for weeks surrounded by boxes and they pack everything brilliantly too. From both moves I’ve only had one glass and a cactus broken, which is less than if I do it myself.

I then do the unpacking in the new place, so I get things where I want them.

I honestly would not go back to packing myself.

ThinWomansBrain · 05/07/2024 21:00

not esp. related, but I wonder if Johnson's gaudy wallpaper is still there?

I really doubt the Sunak's would've put up with the previous tenants tacky decor. Say what you like about them but they have impeccable style.

FeetLikeFlippers · 06/07/2024 20:48

Well I doubt they do any of it themselves - especially that Fishy Rishi who probably has servants. Also his real home is a bloody great mansion in Yorkshire so I don’t suppose he had much stuff of his own at number 10 anyway.

BobnLen · 06/07/2024 20:51

The Sunaks had some designer in to do it, hand pleated opulent curtains and hand gilded cornices and suchlike, they did pay for it though so up to them really

Joyjoj · 06/07/2024 21:10

Willmafrockfit · 05/07/2024 20:29

why did Boris get such expensive wallpaper though?

Apparently he didn't

SpiritOfEcstasy · 06/07/2024 21:27

When I moved back from the US my husbands company were paying for the move. A whole team of movers arrived, we went off out for the afternoon & when we came back our entire home was packed and empty. They unpacked it in the UK too. I imagine that’s exactly what happens on Downing Street.

MaggieFS · 06/07/2024 21:51

I've had packers loads of times and it's a brilliant service. I wouldn't want anyone else to unpack though, I'd never find anything!

The flat at no. 11 is larger than no. 10 so in 1997 the Blairs, with their then three children moved into no.11 and then bachelor Gordon Brown moved into no. 10.

Hasn't Starmer been quoted as saying he's promised his kids a dog for the upheaval of a move to Downing Street?

I also head the thing about the PM's office being rearranged during the visits to the King. But there wouldn't be the pressure to move personal effects as speedily. Certainly Starmer went back home on Friday night.

socks1107 · 06/07/2024 22:02

We've paid a company to pack and unpack in the new house twice now. I'd never pack myself and I'm sure an ex PM would also be paying for that service

Politicians247UnderwearExtinguishingService · 05/07/2024 22:03

Slightly off-topic, but I'm amazed at the amount of stuff they have to do on what must be no sleep at all.

I can't imagine the party leaders can sleep at all on the Thursday (probably not that easily in the week before either). Then they stay up all night to see how it all unfolds and, once they are declared the Prime Minister, they have to go and meet with the King (possibly having to travel some way to London from their constituency), finalise/announce their cabinet, call the US President and other world leaders, move in to 10 Downing Street (at least the basics), give speeches... plus probably lots of other expected tasks as well, all with the eyes of the country (and further afield) scrutinising their every word and action.

I couldn't even stay up too late to see the results on the telly, sitting on my sofa, without dozing off! Are they sponsored by heavy duty Red Bull or something?!

Edited

I was once involved in an Unexpected Significant Crisis while working overseas. I wasn't personally in danger but responding to events where other people were, and responsible for decisions that affected that.

I don't think I slept for about 48 hours, though I was part of a team and we took it in turns to have time to sleep. I forced myself to eat. It is amazing what adrenaline will carry you through.

I used to know someone in disaster management. They were clear that their role was to think, plan and come in at the 36-48 hour point, because that is when the initial responders were becoming sleep deprived and their ability to make good decisions was becoming impaired, and by that time the situation was known and those immediate emergency decisions were over.

Keir Starmer and his team would have planned for this, then had the adrenaline hit to carry them through implementation. This is the point they need to get some sleep!

They don’t live there as a family. I know Rishi’s family well - they said due to the girl’s education they and Akshata live elsewhere and even Rishi only stayed there when needed.

I didn’t realise that . Boris definitely lived there and so did Cameron. The Blair’s lived at no 11.

OhcantthInkofaname · 06/07/2024 22:11

I am thinking that they only have to move personal items. The undies go in the suitcase and you are out!

Gordon Brown was married!

Keir Starmer has just said he will be moving into No 10 on the news.

Mumsgirls · 06/07/2024 22:16

The Blairs sold their house and moaned when prices rose
