Labour victory feels flat - just me?

I seem to remember after the 1997 landslide the country was on a real high for days - this feels like an anti-climax. Is it just me?

Not flat in our house. We're ecstatic.

FloofyBird · 05/07/2024 21:32

I thought the same earlier. Are we all just that fed up of the state of things maybe?

EmmaOvary · 05/07/2024 21:33

It’s because there’s no theme tune.

Let's wrack our brains.

A lot of people are scared, I think. And rightly so. In 1997 we elected a centrist party modelled on the German ‘third way’. They had a vision. Also, Blair said the best thing I’ve ever heard a British politician say “I have three priorities: education, education, education.” Even the more moderate conservatives were interested to see how he got on.

This time there is no vision. Starmer is basically a socialist. This was a man who supported that left-wing loon Jeremy Corbyn ffs. Blair seemed more independent-minded, more interested in finding a compromise between socialism and Thatcherism. Socialism has been tried all over the world, and it always fails. It just doesn’t work.

A lot of people are worried about immigration as well. There’s a strong feeling that this country is overcrowded, even among those on the left. People know that Labour will do nothing to reduce the numbers. The best we can hope is that they don’t allow immigration to spiral out of control. Closely related is a fear of over-development. Angela Rayner has a nasty, contemptuous attitude to such concerns. Both she and Starmer have made it clear that they despise so-called NIMBYs. In the case of Rayner, I suspect it delights her to imagine middle-class homeowners having their lives ruined by new developments. I remember ‘97, and there weren’t those same fears.

TheMoth · 05/07/2024 21:40

I kind of love how much Rayner pisses people off. Especially mc women, for some reason. She's all the bolshy girls I've ever taught, but one who's clawed her way out, rather than end up giving in. So, so many girls who are outwardly confident but inwardly lacking in the confidence mc kids are gifted with.

FinalCeleryScheme · 05/07/2024 21:43

Starmer will bin Rayner as soon as he can. She’s a liability. He’ll find someone more talented to fill the left appeasement spot.

What kind of stereotyping is that?

LightSpeeds · 05/07/2024 21:53

I felt rather emotional today at both Rishi and Keir's speeches - because I realised they are both people with integrity (unlike those total muppets, Boris and Liz Truss).

It IS a big day in this country's history, so I engaged somewhat - although I felt pretty depressed after a few hours watching the coverage and couldn't face any more.

I felt a tiny spark of hope, at some point, but this country is now such a (complicated) mess, I honestly can't think there's the money or anyone bright enough to sort it out.

So, yes, feeling as down and disillusioned as everyone else, pretty much. ☹️

anythinginapinch · 05/07/2024 21:57

I no longer give a shit.

Have voted for labour all my long life. Own a business so lotsatax. But you fuckwits wanted brexit. Wanted tories. Want Reform.

Fuck you. You the great British public have told me you want me-first and fuck the " losers".

What a load of bullshit 😂😂

Ive lived in Salford, Harperhey,Crumsall and Trafford. Council estates all of them.

She does not represent me. Can’t stand her. Reminds me of a gobshite in a pub that’s seconds away from being put on her arse.

If she is the best this country has to offer we are in trouble. She’s embarrassing and her antics on Twitter is beyond unprofessional.

Wish they'd had a Blair type, singing things can only get better and hosting a parties with the rock stars of today. Starmer is the Gareth Southgate of politics.

I hoped that, too, but remember the war crimes and bankrupting the country. Hopefully, Keir will be less exciting but more level-headed.

DoraMae · 05/07/2024 22:10

We are looking forward to this new start. Measured and consistent as leadership should be.

Respect, integrity, responsibility and accountability, hopefully to establish a new ethos for all of us in our country.

These moral standards are something that has been seriously lacking in recent Tory led years.

Livelovebehappy · 05/07/2024 22:15

I think, as others have pointed out, Labour didn’t get in because people wanted them, but got in because the Tories have performed so badly the last five years. We all had very little choice. So people are more apprehensive than excited.

Agree. She will be absolutely embarrassingly out of her depth when having to meet up with signatories and Heads of. She’s probably someone to have a laugh with, and would be good at standing up for you in sticky situations, but she is not made for rational and intelligent conversation needed when mixing with Global leaders.

I feel as though a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders. One I didn't realise was there until it was gone. I've been smiling all day and I am so glad to see the back of the Conservatives. Self-serving loadsamoney tosspots.

I kind of felt like this as well even though im going to be taxed more but im hopeful that it would be used for our country to thrive. It felt like for 14 years I was lending money to a friend in need only to catch them partying in Ibiza and there was nothing I could do about it.

Well going off those high expectations you have I suppose they will be quickly deleting their Twitter posts.

Because they are embarrassing

Rishi called a snap election because he wants to relocate to California & get his kids settled for the Autumn school term. Nothing mysterious about it

Really! Have you got confirmation of this? So sick of people talking rubbish.

Exactly what an embarrassment. This will not end well.

Appalonia · 06/07/2024 00:14

As a lifelong Labour voter I should feel happy but I really worry about their integrity. If Labour MPs can tell such blatant untruths as these ( and throw women under a bus ), then what else are they capable of...?I

No big high here either, although I did feel a bit emotional watching Keir's speech in Downing Street this morning.
I think we're all exhausted with politics, after the last few years. It feels good to know that some true public servants are at the helm again.

This. And I love Ange 🌹

SeriousFaffing · 06/07/2024 01:07

Not here. I feel optimistic and such relief. The sun has been shining here today and the mood generally feels lighter. The reform vote takes the shine off a bit, but I think it’s definitely more an exhale and a ‘thank goodness for that’ as opposed to flat.
