Labour victory feels flat - just me?

I seem to remember after the 1997 landslide the country was on a real high for days - this feels like an anti-climax. Is it just me?

They got fewer votes even that the clown Jeremy Corbyn did.
People voted in a hissy fit of pique against the’Tories’
Only 21%of the electorate voted for them so 4/5 either wanted someone else or couldn’t see any difference between them.
They have no mandate and no talent.
Unsurprising that people are realising that giving the last government a kicking won’t actually deliver anything better.

I think they’ll see that very very soon.

CrispSandwich14 · 05/07/2024 19:59

When Blair won, I remember people singing and dancing in the street. It was crazy, but people voted then because they were desperate for change and really believer Labour could deliver.

Now, people are rightly skeptical about Labour being able to change anything, and many voted just to see the back of the Tories. Expectations will be high - If Labour don't make real changes, or make real changes quickly enough, they'll lose any half hearted support they've had.

Labour are only really good at one thing - insulting their opposition!

It’s not a victory, and 99.999% of people in work will be worse off.

Plus our children will probably go to war. You voted for it, you deserve it so suck it up.

Hold on, why?
(I'm not allowed to vote in GE), but why the gloomy remark?
Genuine interest.

*Because too many are taking from the system and not enough are contributing.

Demographics have changed

Theu don’t have any choice but to tax the money that’s moving round the system, and most of that is from people in work.

We are all going to have to pay more tax but it can’t just come from income, there aren’t enough workers. And of course no one wants to pay.

It can’t come from anywhere else, capital value is an illusion. It’s an npv of something in the future that hasn’t happened yet.

We’re in very dangerous territory, and the ones profiting from it, who are way above the elected parliament won’t let it collapse which is why those in the middle will pay and we’ll get a war.

It’s downhill, but it will be faster downhill under labour than Tory. Not that I like Tory.

Too many taking from the system and not enough contributing to it is quite simple and obvious, and it’s been going on for decades.

It ends in huge political shake up / civil war. Take your pick.

Why will it be faster downhill under labour than Tory? (According to your reckoning)

Simply because they’ll spend more money we don’t have, and they don’t really understand capitalism, which like it or not is the system propping up what we’ve got.

anyway, stop worrying about my reckoning, think for yourself, it’s a dying art.

It can’t come from anywhere else, capital value is an illusion. It’s an npv of something in the future that hasn’t happened yet.

I think they will look at CGT and IHT, etc.

We’re in very dangerous territory, and the ones profiting from it, who are way above the elected parliament won’t let it collapse which is why those in the middle will pay and we’ll get a war.

who is going to go to war? People can’t even be bothered to vote!

(I'm not allowed to vote in GE), but why the gloomy remark?
Genuine interest.

I wouldn't take any notice of that.

We won't be worse off financially.

If a war is on the horizon, it'll come no matter which party is in charge (NATO).

rockstarshoes · 05/07/2024 20:09

I'm so relieved & elated!

My seat is Labour for the first time in its history, almost 100 years!

That feels pretty conclusive to me!

Cuppapuppa · 05/07/2024 20:13

Simply because they’ll spend more money we don’t have, and they don’t really understand capitalism, which like it or not is the system propping up what we’ve got.

The Tories don’t have a great track record of understanding capitalism either.

Farting · 05/07/2024 20:14

Bleurfghjj · 05/07/2024 20:07

What don’t they understand about capitalism?

They don’t understand that in order for it to succeed it has to be aspirational and largely unpunished. They believe it should be punished, and it’s therefore disincentivised.

Do that and it implodes, capital values go with it, so does productivity, and so does ability to levy taxes.

Amd when all that has happened, our weakest can’t be taken care of and as I’ve said we end up in civil war.

They won on less votes than Labour did in 2019. Apathy won, as people predicted, thus demonstrating how broken the system is. Labour won on a vote count thinner than a roly paper to be perfectly honest. Labour didn't win, the Tories lost.

Thats not true

Thedayb4youcame · 05/07/2024 20:15

I am so glad I found this post. All day in the news (radio) it's been about how Labour won. Which they did, based on the voting process we have.

And I'm not complaining about the voting process either.

What I am saying is yes, they won, but the fact is that of all the people who voted, most didn't vote Labour. It looked to me like they got in because a load of otherwise Conservative voters opted for Reform.

And like it or loath it, there has to be something in that message which needs evaluation.

Previousreligion · 05/07/2024 20:16

For me, the feeling isn't to do with Labour winning or the Tories losing. It's because Reform got so many votes. It makes me really worried about the disruption they might cause in parliament and within the Tory Party. I used to vote Tory, I don't want them to swing further right and want them to regain truthful, centrist MPs. I worry about Reforms influence at the next election and the rise of the Far Right across the world.

I'm scared.
I'm scared for myself.
My family.
My friends.
The whole Country.
Just wait a year and all the labour voters will be regetting it.

Same shit another day tbh. Just crack on because nowt will change

So far we had Tories spending money we don’t have on absolutely nothing in particular, literally down the drain. And please stop with this understanding/not understanding of capitalism. Tories in their handling of Brexit demonstrated that they are ANTI business and will sacrifice anything for their ideology.

Cuppapuppa · 05/07/2024 20:21

Productivity has been crap for years, we never really recovered from the 08 crash. And that was under the Tories.

Wish they'd had a Blair type, singing things can only get better and hosting a parties with the rock stars of today. Starmer is the Gareth Southgate of politics.

Oh, spare me. Thank God Keir isn't a slime-ball celeb.

Oldcroneandthreewitches · 05/07/2024 20:22

The vast majority voted Labour just to get Tory out. I think this sums up ‘cutting your nose off to spite your face’

Labour victory feels flat - just me?
Happyholidays78 · 05/07/2024 20:23

Definitely no party atmosphere like 1997 & that is because there is a massive shit show to sort out. I'm glad Labour are in but flipping heck they've got a long & difficult road ahead!

Well we were all scared when Tory idiots brought Brexit in. So this drama is a bit ridiculous. You’ll get over and get on with your life.

Rishi called a snap election because he wants to relocate to California & get his kids settled for the Autumn school term. Nothing mysterious about it

tinydynamine · 05/07/2024 20:24

Same percentage as Labour got in 2015...remember Ed Miliband?
