Labour victory feels flat - just me?

I seem to remember after the 1997 landslide the country was on a real high for days - this feels like an anti-climax. Is it just me?

Yeah same.
I just feel relief the tories got ousted.
It was quite nice seeing people like Jacob Reese mogg lose their seat..
But I don't feel elation.
I do think a lot of people just wanted the tories gone rather than being excited by labour.
If you compare it to when Corbyn was leader.. I know he was divisive abd many people hated him... but many people truly believed in him and were genuinely hopeful about what he might do...
I don't think anyone really feels that kind of hope about Starmer... at best they think he will be a bit more sensible than the tories..
If you look at vote share as well he hasn't actually got that many votes despite winning a landslide. Its more that other voters were split so tories got less votes.. but also that his campaigning was more about targeting swing seats with getting people to vote tactically.
Compare it to corbyns vote share... if it were PR nor first past the post Corbyn would have sailed in... but Starmer wouldn't have won.
So of course there's not much real joy in this win because there's not actually much real enthusiastic support.
Of course the flip side will be there's also not as much vitriol against him as he's not as divisive as Corbyn.
But there's also the problem of the far right this time... he's set up in a position where he has to pander to the right wing now to keep power. And he's alienated much of the left... who were traditionally a bit part of the labour party.
It does just seem a bit muted and sad.
Of course I'm relieved.
I voted Labour.
But I'm certainly not elated or joyful. It was more about not wanting another term of the tories who are an utter shambles.

It certainly doesn’t feel like when Tony Blair got in no . Then there was a real air of optimism that things were going to get better but I am older now and not so optimistic and the country is in such a mess.
I did feel far happier this morning though feeling that the country is in safer hands. Also quite emotional seeing his cabinet going in. I know I would have felt depressed if the Tories had won. Lovely to see Ed Miliband especially.

KateDelRick · 06/07/2024 17:00

Wasn't that great seeing Ed Miliband? I was already feeling happy, but that was a lovely bonus!

Its definitely flat because lets be honest they only got in because the Tories are so bloody awful not because Labour have anything great to offer! They will most definitely be out in four years time!

That would also depend on what state the Tory party is in. They will probably still be in furious infighting mode.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 05/07/2024 19:57

They got fewer votes even that the clown Jeremy Corbyn did.
People voted in a hissy fit of pique against the’Tories’
Only 21%of the electorate voted for them so 4/5 either wanted someone else or couldn’t see any difference between them.
They have no mandate and no talent.
Unsurprising that people are realising that giving the last government a kicking won’t actually deliver anything better.

So who do you think would do a better job then?

KateDelRick · 06/07/2024 17:07

@Bewareofthisonetoo do you understand what "mandate" means in UK politics?

I'm scared.
I'm scared for myself.
My family.
My friends.
The whole Country.
Just wait a year and all the labour voters will be regetting it.

Why will the Labour voters be regretting it a year from now?
The Tories have done a very poor job over the last 14 years and I certainly don't want those incompetent, lying, corrupt and self serving bastards back.
Or are you hoping Nigel Farage will be winning the next election?

DeadlyKnightshade · 06/07/2024 17:21

Lots of disappointed Tories on this thread all being Neggy Norah's.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 06/07/2024 17:26

I can't believe anyone would want the Conservative Government back in power. Immoral, lying shower of shits, who partied while people died and broke the NHS, to say nothing of Education.

Starmer may not be the most charismatic of men, but he has a solid background in public service and I think will get us there. It's going to take time, but we've finally someone with morals to govern the country.

Even simple facts of history are rewritten by Tory fans.
The 2008 financial crash was not caused by the Brown government.

No one said Labour or Conservative "caused" it, the discrepancy is over who was in power at the time.

Labour were in power. Brown dealt with it well, considering how serious it was. I dread to think what would have happened had Cameron, May, Johnson, Truss or Sunak been in charge 😱

Unbelievable, isn't it. It's like the last 14 years never happened.

Do that and it implodes, capital values go with it, so does productivity, and so does ability to levy taxes.

Productivity has been crap for years, we never really recovered from the 08 crash. And that was under the Tories.

@KateDelRick this was the incorrect post re 2008

No I’m posting what resulted in the exchange. It was an error that’s what others are responding to

Your post isn’t what was said

KateDelRick · 06/07/2024 17:44

No, it wasn't caused by the Brown government. It's lucky he was in charge, though.

No, it wasn't caused by the Brown government. It's lucky he was in charge, though.

The point is, no one said that any one particular government caused the crash.

The word "caused" was your choice of words.

The original discrepency was over who was in power at the time of the crash, not who caused it.

Stop policing the thread 🤷🏻‍♂️

@Oldcroneandthreewitches for someone who’s lived there I’m surprised you spelled both Harpurhey and Crumpsall wrongly. Weird.

I'm fairly relaxed right now about the GE result. It's what I expected. SKS has won, and appears to be making sensible noises about the next steps. So far, his Cabinet is as expected. I like the Patrick Vallance (science) and James Timpson (prisons) moves as both have valuable skills and experience to bring to government. And I think putting Angela Rayner in charge of social housing is inspired, as long as she understands that it needs to be funded by the companies that are going to profit from building it. Hold the developers feet to the heat; it's not about building the expensive houses first and then claiming they can't afford the rest.
