Lion.
I watched it on a plane. I ugly cried so much that I soaked my top through and the steward came to check I was OK.

A star is born. Every time I cry like it's the first!

I'm in stitches at this post. Who comes into a self indulgent sobfest thread like "well I only care for the finest opera"

and the opera is fucking Gilbert and Sullivan

ahem. Did I say it was the finest?

No I fucking didn't.

As it happens, I cried at the BEGINNING of ET, and I cried at Twice Round the Daffodils when I was about 6, and I cried at Up and Inside Out and Moana and TS3 and most of the ones mentioned here that I've actually seen

... talking of which, I note that you do actually know what Iolanthe is, whereas many of these films I've not even heard of, so your education is obviously better than mine...

(not Truly Madly Deeply though, had had it hyped up to me far too much and couldn't get over the ridiculous facial hair)

And that's possibly part of why I don't understand the OP, because I cry at the drop of a hat (in fact, I believe I may have once or twice cried at At the Drop of a Hat, for complicated reasons involving bereavement) and don't find it particularly helpful or refreshing or as another pp said cathartic.

Oh god yes.

How to make a grown man cry.

Fellow G&S fan sending you some solidarity - I'm not sure why you're getting snark. Obvs operetta and opera are different beasts, but you never said otherwise?

The music in Iolanthe is beautiful (and I agree, 'My Lord, a suppliant at your feet I kneel' onwards is very moving)😊And the Act 1 finale is my favourite of all G&Ss! I'm actually performing in an amateur production of Iolanthe in October, playing Leila. You are not alone in loving this music.

merryhouse · 06/07/2024 19:59

@Watercoloursky I think I'm getting snark because people think I'm Putting On Airs and Getting Above Myself.

Which, you know, fair enough. Grin

I didn't explain properly. I was trying to illustrate how I can cry at any silly old thing if I just let it happen. Films, TV, books (I was in bits when Lords and Ladies first came out) - or indeed a daft operetta which almost certainly only has a hold on me at all because it contains so many memories.

Pan's Labyrinth. I cried so much because I realised that the whole thing was just a dream in girl's head

Growsomeballswoman · 06/07/2024 20:14

The Magdalene Sisters - the most heartbreaking thing I've ever watched.

The light between the Oceans
but my classic scene is when Rhett Butler refuses to allow his daughter o be buried in Gone with the Wind

The Light Between the Oceans is one of the saddest and most beautiful films I've ever seen. I just could not stop crying at the end.
