One thing you're confident Labour can sort/change

Have to admit, I've never voted labour (but did change my vote this time around), have lived in a very safe Tory seat (but now LibDem) for years. Totally accept we need a change.

If you voted labour or know a lot about politics, I'd be interested to know one thing you feel confident they can sort, do better on or bring in that will be beneficial. No arguments/criticisms of others please.

I really don't know.

Which is why I didn't vote for them.

Bring back the principles of public life (also known as the Nolan Principles). Johnson and cronies ditched those in abundance and the corruption at the centre is horrific now. Needs a restart and proper accountability across government departments and arms length bodies.

That in itself would save tax payers money and mean decisions were based on proper risk assessments, cost benefit analyses, and evidence. Rather than who happened to be at a dinner one evening.

Well said.

Great they can increase your council tax then but I pay plenty thanks

Same here! £225/month over 12 for a terraced townhouse 😯 Plus on an estate which has a yearly management fee of nearly £700...

Nowhere prestigious either, just in a village on the outskirts of a SE city.

I'm hoping that most of them will know and understand what life is really like for ordinary people - particularly those who are struggling on minimum wage.

Too many of the Tories are from such a privileged, moneyed background that they have no concept of how it feels to have to choose between buying food and paying the gas bill.

LumiB · 05/07/2024 17:24

I'm also confident that labour will continue to think chucking more money at things will fox them but if we are already at record high taxes and things are still bad isn't it time we stop and think we'll clearly more money isn't the answer. We are somehow wasting money,.bureaucracy, inefficiencies etc.

Um have you looked at the finances of the people elected. Seriously?

Setting up yet another government quango to ‘smash the gangs’ is laughable. I would love to see Labour look a cross party team to look at the NHS otherwise they will just be moving around the deckchairs.

Money is NOT the answer to the NHS. They waste so much often to protect their own jobs and there is no centralisation. I worked as a major supplier to them for years. The waste and incompetence was staggering.

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 18:55

Starmer owns a house worth nearly £2 million and owns land in Surrey. He really doesn’t know what it’s like to struggle and his wife is ex private school. Bar that he is just like the rest of us

This is silly. You know Starmer's upbringing was regular and he has explained about those years being financially tight.

So what do you begrudge - that he became a lawyer and bought a house?

Well now he is the polar opposite of the working person he says he wants to help I hope he pays his fair share of taxes as he increases them. After all his policies should apply to his wealth too. Why should he has so much wealth when it can be used ro help the greater good

Portakalkedi · 05/07/2024 19:57

Nothing. I have no faith in them at all, and no I didn't vote for them.

NHS

Have you had a look at the Labour run NHS in Wales ?

It’s a fucking disaster . As is dentistry .

HairyChin · 05/07/2024 19:59

Absolutely fuck all. I am dreading it.

There is not a single fully costed policy in Labour manifesto. Their biggest income is £5.3bn from non-doms which won't materialise (they are already leaving in droves).

What's going to happen in the next two months - "things are much worse than initially thought, sorry you have to pay a bit more for the benefit of society".

Wave of taxes hitting higher earners and everyone with some assets/savings - usual targets who are less mobile and less able to escape.

This will result in these groups, mostly professionals, being increasingly disengaged and withdrawing from labour market, either reducing hours or early retirement. Some highly skilled and younger ones will emigrate. Which will in turn result in reduction of total tax take and having to increase immigration to compensate.

16yolds, influenced by TikTok will be ripe for Reform so 2029 will be scary indeed.

I

I agree. The money has to come from somewhere. And you simply can’t keep taxing the same people. Better to tax everyone a tiny bit rather than those who will make alternative decisions.

Redheadredemption · 05/07/2024 20:06

Experts in ministerial positions.
A brilliant public law barrister now Attorney General.
A scientist in a science minister position.
A prison reform expert as Prisons Minister.
This is very refreshing.

Whereas it's perfect as it is now in England.

This with bells on.

Incompetence and indifference. Money won't help, they need drastic structural changes.

But Wales as a blueprint...

Arraminta · 06/07/2024 10:58

No point throwing more money at the NHS. You could give 100% of our GDP to the NHS and it still wouldn't be enough because it already squanders and mis-manages the vast amounts it's already given.

At my annual appraisal (solicitor) I was asked to explain a write off for a disbursement amounting to £1300.

The NHS just squanders millions with no accountability. I'd be out of a job with a miniscule fraction of that loss.

I don't know how the NHS get away with mismanging public funds and they remain god like status.

Fizbosshoes · 06/07/2024 11:27

I'm disappointed they haven't sorted out the weather yet 🤣 10.5° and chucking it down

curlycurlymoo · 06/07/2024 12:24

I'd love them to bring back surestart.

I'd love them to bring back surestart.

What is the obsession with this? At the peak of its popularity there were only 3600 sure start centres. Only 1 in 3 were closed. They still exist.

Not sure how 3600 centres benefited the entire population of children. More money squandered on a small project that didn't deliver much.
