One thing you're confident Labour can sort/change

Have to admit, I've never voted labour (but did change my vote this time around), have lived in a very safe Tory seat (but now LibDem) for years. Totally accept we need a change.

If you voted labour or know a lot about politics, I'd be interested to know one thing you feel confident they can sort, do better on or bring in that will be beneficial. No arguments/criticisms of others please.

I am.confident we will have less green spaces and trees as they bulldoze over green land to build more houses...um so much for protecting the environment and the climate

meisafairy · 05/07/2024 13:15

They will not have empathy or any support for those suffering in Gaza.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 13:17

Lumi b we are in the belt outside London and everywhere but everywhere there are building works. Huge towering ugly flats everywhere and constant challenge to green belt land. I can't see where any more building can do, they have encroached on green belt already?

Actually I do know how to fix some of it - money. And lots of it. The attainment challenge in Scotland had good results but the money has stopped being provided.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 13:20

@Bumpitybumper I'm looking forward to not hearing about Rwanda!
But I agree what starmer proposed is what the Conservative have already done.
They are already tackling the gangs and it's a drop in the ocean.. It would have been nice to hear from ks... You have done x, what we will do is b.

On foreign policy, the British wait and see what the Americans are doing first. It's been ever thus, under Labour or Tories, ever since WW2, if not before. That won't change for Gaza. Or Ukraine, for that matter.

FundingitallHow · 05/07/2024 13:21

@kirinm I'm not sure how they got their stats for patient satisfaction because maternity services were in total crisis, underfunded and dangerous across the UK at the end of the last Labour government.

What about hearing about higher numbers?

I’d prefer not to have that

EdithArtois · 05/07/2024 13:26

The fact is that any party has a mountain to climb and some of the issues are long term. I honestly think there is little room
for manoeuvre for anyone. What I hope more than anything is that the type of politics we see in this country will change. I want some real conversations about some of the major challenges we face and some of the difficult challenges we face as a society. I don’t warm to Keir Starmer at all and he has zero charisma but I would take boring and competent over the absolute shitshow and contempt we’ve had from our politicians.

daffodilandtulip · 05/07/2024 13:32

Well, he won't be corrupt and doing everything to pay his mates. That'll make a nice change.

However, I feel that they have inherited too much of a mess, so by the time the next election comes around, everyone will point out what they haven't been able to fix, and they'll be out again. And we'll be back at square one.

Council tax is really low where I am, second lowest in country

I'd be happy if they put it up - we need to invest in care

Are you in Wandsworth borough by any chance? I’m in a neighbour of Wandsworth where by contrast it’s one of the highest!

Raising Council Tax a bit (or a lot!) won't pay for the amount of care that we will need as a country.

We have an aging population with more disabled and sick than ever before. The cost of care is extortionate and we need to ask some tough questions about how we can fund this in a sustainable and fair way.

The same goes for SEN funding, healthcare and immigration. It isn't good enough anymore to pretend that we can tax our way through these issues anymore.

Lovetotravel123 · 05/07/2024 14:47

I didn’t vote for them but I have a weak hope that they might succeed in nationalising the railways. I realise this takes time though. In general, I believe in competition but that clearly doesn’t work on our railways and to be honest, they couldn’t really get much worse than they are already.

I believe the breakfast clubs for each school will have a direct impact on child poverty and wellbeing of children. I’m a former primary school teacher and had many cases of children not eating breakfast before school. They would then cry during the morning, saying they were hungry and I would give them food but by then it’s too late! They’ve already had a Maths or English lesson and had not learnt anything because they were too hungry to concentrate! ☹️ The breakfast clubs will also help childcare issues for parents.

Edited

How easy are they going to be for schools to implement though?

The staffing, space (as you will know, most schools have to have several 'sittings' for lunch - granted, not every child will go to a breakfast club, but it will likely be many more if it is free).

I don't think breakfast clubs will be difficult. There'll be exisit staff who are glad of the extra hours and they'll use the classrooms.

rkahic · 05/07/2024 15:09

Given the vast experience their cabinet will have in governing(well one of them) , probably nothing

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/07/2024 15:10

he's going to magic up 1000's of new GP's and teachers - so I'm looking forward to that.

I agree it will take time but I expect they will start by extending the offering in schools that already have breakfast clubs and therefore the space. If sufficient budget is given, new staff can be recruited to run them.

The OP’s question was One thing you're confident Labour can sort/change, I answered that question with my opinion as asked.

Tracker1234 · 05/07/2024 16:11

The children whose parent/parent cannot be bothered to give them a bit of breakfast won’t be the ones turning up at 0800 to get some there.

My Mum was a primary school teacher and used to give some toast and a drink to certain pupils but often the ones really in need turned up late or not at all.

Shouldn’t the question be why on earth are the parents not feeding their own children? What are they doing that is more important?

Thingamebobwotsit · 05/07/2024 16:25

Bring back the principles of public life (also known as the Nolan Principles). Johnson and cronies ditched those in abundance and the corruption at the centre is horrific now. Needs a restart and proper accountability across government departments and arms length bodies.

That in itself would save tax payers money and mean decisions were based on proper risk assessments, cost benefit analyses, and evidence. Rather than who happened to be at a dinner one evening.
