I wish Labour could come up with a better name than "levelling up". Especially as the tories trashed the term.

DuncinToffee · 05/07/2024 15:22

40% of MPs are now women, record 264 women MPs

SerendipityJane · 05/07/2024 16:15

How quickly can they scrap the whole Rwanda abomination ? Am I naïve in thinking a single signature could do it ?

If you are I’m equally naive. I don’t think they’d have promised to scrap it on Day 1 if it wasn’t a pretty simple process. I guess they could just instruct the Home Office not to implement it and scrap the legislation afterwards.

Not a lot beyond we have a Labour government rather than a Tory one, hurray.

The DUP did badly. Ian Paisley Jr's face was a picture as he went up to the podium. Jim Allister of the TUV won it. He's an arch brexiteer and had a pact with Reform UK before Nigel decided to run and ditched them for Ian Jr and Sammy Wilson of the DUP. Jim's a wee evil leprechaun of a man.

Robin Swan won a seat for UUP. He's a decent sort. Was our Minister for Health during Covid.

Alliance took Lagan Valley from the DUP. It was Jeffrey Donaldson's seat, the new DUP guy lost. I'm glad to see it go Alliance's way.

Sinn Fein are now NI's biggest parliamentary party. But they don't sit or vote.

So it all now depends on how well our Assembly get on with the Labour government. I hope Hillary Benn gets the Sec of State for NI post.

Edited

Brilliant summary. Well done also to SDLP who got two seats and pleased for Sorcha Eastwood in Lagan Valley. Agree that the TUV is odious.

She'll stay leader of Alliance Party and a minister in Stormount. She is TWAW, but most recently has been in the news for a Bill that protected abusers' identities for up to 25 years after their death. The courts said No!Grin

So pleased about the court's decision. What was Naomi thinking 😯

"I am referring (of course) to the sudden epiphany some people claim to have had around PR."

Isn't that the truth.

PR has been raised in a number of MN threads over the years and been roundly ignored by those with a then vested interest in FPTP.

I'd love to repay that hypocrisy in kind but I happen to think it should be explored at a convenient juncture. Clearly there isn't any rush otherwise it would have been raised before the election...

The problem was the referendum on AV was a washout, and now the politics has got so "interesting" nobody will want a rerun.

We would be in serious trouble if it hour FPTP at this point, just from the point of view of getting anything done.

Since I know there are loads of people with different languages here (which I celebrate) is there a single word we can purloin into English about being really nasty to people whose sudden conversion to a faith is so fucking obvious it hurts ?

I mean I can think of lots of words, but they're really abusive, and I'd prefer more nuanced.

I am referring (of course) to the sudden epiphany some people claim to have had around PR.

Incidentally Dawn Butler did suggest there is an appetite for it within Labour

An interesting bargaining position might be PR and HoL reform.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labour_Campaign_for_Electoral_Reform

I think the answer probably lies in keeping the Commons FPTP but having more than half of the Lords elected for a longer term, perhaps 10-12 years by a PR system. With the remaining Lords keeping some of the strengths of the Lords in having Lords Spiritual, Temporal and some element of cross benchers.

Very disappointed IDS, Braverman, Patel and Hunt stay
The worst of the worst

I agree. Unfortunately the prediction polls were showing Braverman and Patel as retaining their seats, as was Badenoch. Three utterly repulsive women.

IDS and Hunt had been predicted to lose but obviously didn't unfortunately.

Another loser prediction that didn't come true was Jenrick. I'd put him in with the 3 witches above, all hideous specimens.

Now the fight starts between them as to who will take over from Sunak and it's going to be ugly. I really need to try and switch off from them now and focus on the positives of what lies ahead for us.

Grantshappsgoodbye · 05/07/2024 16:47

I heard a clip of Starmer's speech while I was in the car, to paraphrase from memory.

The government will treat everyone in the country with dignity and respect.

That is quite a contrast to the previous government that demonised a whole range of people, and my emphasis, everyone in the country, not all British, or all our people, everyone.

Lets give Hunt some credit he worked hard in the past 6 weeks to secure his seat.

IDS is lucky that Labour dropped a ball.

It's so refreshing to see Starmer keep people in the Cabinet roles they've already been shadowing, rather than doing a reshuffle to curry favour and/or bribe different sides of the party. Already this feels like grown up politics with integrity.
