Hope those who voted Labour are happy now. The country will soon be overrun with immigrants using our NHS, benefits, housing and yes Labour wants to raise tax to cover these costs. Labour made a mess last time and almost bankrupt the country after inheriting a healthy public finances left by the Tories government in 1997. Oh and not forgetting that Labour sold the entire gold reserves at rock bottom price.

🍇oh, those grapes! 😂

ahh yes everything is SO simple! why do we bother with political parties when ALT72 on Mumsnet clearly knows it all.

Very happy thanks for asking @ALT72 though I voted Lib Dem due to the area I live in.

Some reading on the 1997 Global financial crisis originating in the US for you https://www.britannica.com/money/financial-crisis-of-2007-2008

TexaSun · 09/07/2024 13:24

@ALT72
It does baffle me how many people are wrapped up in the rhetoric spouted by the Tories and Reform.

To start, your quoting a Labour government who took power almost 30 years ago. A lot has changed since then...bit of a moot point really.

Excellent Guardian article worth a read, with graphic timeline showing most recent Labour government figures as well:

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/04/how-14-years-of-tory-rule-have-changed-britain-in-charts

Owning a home has become harder - now 8.4x median household income.

Public satisfaction in the NHS has plummeted

Immigration levels have skyrocketed since Brexit

Fall in crime but long waits for justice

Massive increase in reliance on food banks

Do you really thing another 5 years of this shambolic Tory government would of solved this? Or even worse, the far-right reform who have no policies that are coherent or accurately budgeted, but only want to rile people up and create rifts within society?

Labour, Lib Dems and Greens have reasonable and sensible approaches to tackle the issues we face. Left of centre politics will always look after the many instead of the few. It's sad so many get caught up in the right-wing rhetoric, which I believe (rightly or wrongly) is based on bigoted beliefs.

How 14 years of Tory rule have changed Britain – in charts

Charts show what has happened in five key areas, from the NHS to food banks, since the Conservatives came to power in 2010

The Guardian is so Labour biased. Labour almost bankrupt this country and in a mess at the end of their term - they left the Tory government with nothing to improve the NHS for example. This wasn’t something that could be fixed overnight!

But why do you sound just as unhappy now that you have had 14 years of Tory policies since Labour left power in 2010?

newnamethanks · 09/07/2024 14:05

NHS satisfaction rates were high when Labour was voted out due to the global financial crash caused by finagling on the global markets. Read about it. Although Tory lies like to attribute it to Gordon Brown. Look at the state of this country after 14 years of Tories raiding the till. Hope you're proud of it, nobody else is.

and where are you getting your news on this from? Sounds like Tory soundbites.
there was a global financial crash, we weren't alone in feeling it.

Not overnight but over 5110 days? Yes it could have been.

Face it, most people can see that the last 14 years has had a detrimental impact on our lives.

Apparently it couldn't be fixed in 14 years either...

Do read up on the 2008 global financial crisis before posting on the subject. It really does help to actually know what you're talking about.

verdantverdure · 09/07/2024 14:15

The NHS was a big factor in this election.

Rishi Sunak didn't visit any hospitals did he? I don't suppose he had the nerve. After what the Tories have done to the NHS.

At some point the Tories realised that with their section of the electorate they could get away with just the announcing part.

They didn't actually have to do the things. Just promise them, then announce them.

Unfortunately for them:

A) that doesn't work on the rest of us.
B) the population it does work on is shrinking
C) Reform siphoned off a whole bunch of that section of the electorate with their promises.

Haven't they already set up a meeting to end the strikes next week. Who you are talking about is the Tories and what they did to the NHS. Tories don't like public services they pay for their health care and send their children to private schools. The Reform party is for the likes of you and the minority who think like you.

Yes and if the doctors get big pay rises how do you suppose Labour will fund them? Do you think they’ll raise taxes somewhere , or take from another department?

CormorantStrikesBack · 10/07/2024 06:39

Well I guess if they’re not wasting £290 million on a useless Rwanda scheme they will have money there for dr pay rises?

Will they raise taxes? Probably. But I’m happy about that. I think what the Tories failed to realise is there is a significant amount of people who would happily pay a bit more tax if it meant the nhs, education, etc was better funded.

Paying doctors properly means they will stay in post, so the agency and locum bill will drop. I know what agency and locum staff cost compared to employed staff, it's a shocker.

I read that Rwanda are not agreeing to hand back the 290m. Can't say I blame them but wouldn't it be better to send as many as we can there so we at least get our moneys worth?

Surely we could send those men who refuse to say who they are so we can check on their criminal background at least.

is 290m a good sum for 150 people? that is not our moneys worth.

"refuse to say who they are" who are they refusing to say it to? considering the lack of processing that's been happening.

That is the sunk-costs fallacy in action. Spending further money in the courts to try and use those places is just throwing good money after bad.

Hilarious… Labour 2 months in and they haven’t a clue and are now about to destroy the economy. Removed winter fuel payments, plans to raise tax left, right and centre and punish those who have worked hard. Seen all this before when Labour was last in government. Notice how Labour voters have been quiet recently - nice one(!)

We're quiet because we have the decency to give a new government time, unlike the sour grapes brigade...

How gullible. Blair's stupid new GP contract in the early noughties was supposed to "cure" the GP shortage. Well that worked well! Who'd have thought that giving them a big pay rise and allowing them to opt out of unsocial hours would have resulted in them working fewer hours! Doh! Blair was conned by the BMA.

We've already seen the new Labour govt conned by the train unions - they got the pay rise, but are still striking for more!

Araminta1003 · 04/09/2024 10:22

Why did Starmer visit a primary school in Orpington this week wearing a blue tie? Reeves in Red and a school with Red school jumpers. It is all incredibly confusing…

Different conflict, as you would know if you kept up. Then again, the previous government left so many industrial relations conflicts unresolved that it gets confusing.

I can't work out whether this is satire or stupidity, sorry!

It was meant to be satire.
