@Tracker1234 Why do posters often criticise Owen Jones' body type/height? What does him being 'little' have to do with his political opinions?

It's just an English colloquialism isn't it?

The little devil, you little liar.

Owen Jones wanted the left of Labour to have the power to hold the rest of the PLP hostage rather like the ERG have done to the Tories.

The only way to get that is for Labour to have a slim majority so they would need every vote in order to enact Labour policy.

So he advised people to vote Green.

Would you rather the tories who partied while people died alone?

So did Starmageddon & his lot, beer & curry, they are all hypocrites😩

dibly · 05/07/2024 18:35

Not nervous but gutted, instead of Labour we’ve got Giles fecking Brandreth’s daughter

There's a massive turnout. Which could be bad news.

Massive turnout ? 60% not massive..

CurlewKate · 05/07/2024 19:03

@Shudahaddogs "Massive turnout ? 60% not massive.."

Less than 60% actually. They were predicting much higher when I posted that!

I think this is a fantastic question. I'm a Labour Councillor and have worked my socks off, successfully, for my candidate. But, yes, I am nervous but also relieved we have defeated the worst government I can remember. Labour have to, and will, prove they were the best option.

By saying that ALL humans must have equal rights, and that no one must be deprived of a job, pay, reproductive rights, etc. on the grounds of some characteristic that makes them 'different'.

Feminists in the 70s and 80s sought to reduce the social distinctions between men and women, rather than emphasizing them. E,g, on a minor level using 'chairperson' instead of 'chairman' / 'chairwoman'.

Encourage politicians to 'define' me as a woman, and soon many of them will be seeking to define my role in life on the grounds of my sex.

Lovely aim.

To achieve it, you need clear definitions. For two reasons:

  1. to be able to identify (and to allow the law to observe) whether any direct or indirect discrimination is actually going on against a particular group of people sharing a protected characteristic (see my earlier post on this thread responding to you); and
  2. to enable inevitable, and natural conflicts of rights to be identified and settled even-handedly, as fairly as possible.

I think when people hear "Equality" they glibly imagine a mythical society where everyone is on an equal footing and no person or group needs any special consideration or reasonable adjustment.

But even in the most egalitarian society that is just not the case, and someone's rights will always be held in tension with someone else's rights (or responsibilities). It is certainly not only sex and gender reassignment that come into conflict of that's what concerns you.

It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the system, and it's not a dirty concept, it's just a natural feature of different people having different needs.

It's terrible that anyone has seriously voted for Reform and everything they stand for and their entire lack of structure or plan to make any of it happen. It scares me what is happening to our country. Apparently they attract a lot of young voters. The Tories have many older voters many of whom will not be here at the next election. They have a huge job to do to re-build a base of voters to replace those they have already lost but also those who they will lose. They have admitted they are struggling to attract young people.

My 19 year old DS was working on a government project last year & was tasked with going into the local conservative club and buying a drink from the bar (to test their challenge 25 process). He said that he was immediately surrounded by several members who insisted on giving him a tour then sat him down and were very reluctant to let him leave. He said they were very friendly but gave him the creeps as they just kept saying that they needed 'young blood' 🧛‍♂️
oh & the bar was closed.

Well they certainly need 'young blood' and they are not subtle 😂

Delighted with the result, but these are seriously bad times,Labour please don' t let us down . As Kier Starmer said, there's a lot of work to be done.
I'm pleased so many have rejected the Tories but terrified that they have gone to Reform.
I'll never forgive Nigel Farage.
Anyway,onwards.

Wait until the honeymoon period is over, & you can’t get an appointment at the Gps, dentist. Your kids kids cant get a school of their choosing, won’t be able to buy a house/ or social housing because they will house the migrants first, they will tax everything that moves- Reform will just grow & grow 😆

I cant grumble, I phoned Gp about pain in my stomach, sent to private hospital 2 wks later, saw the main man, scan eight days later, results 2 weeks later, booked in next week to have my gall bladder removed all on the NHS. I think though it will only get worse

kirinm · 06/07/2024 10:45

On what basis can you say it will get worse? Any actual evidence that Labour want to or will make the NHS worse than it is now?

Rarewaxwing · 06/07/2024 10:47

@Mt61 - how on earth are you getting the gallbladder op so quickly? I was diagnosed in November and had to go private to have the operation. I'm still on the waiting list for the NHS op. This is the usual story I hear from others needing their gallbladder out.

(And sympathies, btw - it's a horrible pain to suffer).

Theweepywillow · 06/07/2024 10:59

I think letting it be known no one is going to Rwanda before the borders are strengthened and the gangs tackled is a shocking error of judgement, now they are celebrating they can come over, without fear of going to Rwanda, for many it was a deterrent. Now a very bad problem has just become a lot worse, a lot. Net migration is about to go through the roof.

Allowing hundreds of thousands of migrants into the country can only impact the NHS, that’s from a pragmatic point of view not a racist point of view. Even my black & Asian friends say enough is enough! Have you got any evidence they will make it better?

MotherofPearl · 06/07/2024 11:29

You do realise that huge numbers of migrants work in the NHS, effectively propping it up in many places?

Net migration was unusually high in 2023, and it was overwhelmingly legal migration. Hundreds of thousands of non-EU work visas were issued. Many of them were for workers in the NHS, schools and other public services. There were also hundreds of thousands of study visas for students.

The conservative government chose to have very high net migration last year (685,000) to prop up the NHS and economy. They wanted migration to be that high, it was a choice,

The number of people who came in small boats in 2023 was under 30,000. If the tories had managed to stop every single one then net migration would still have been over 650,000. Talking about small boats is a way of making it sound like you want to reduce migration, when in reality you just don’t want to tell the public that you’ve decided that these levels of migration (that they don’t like) are needed for the economy and the NHS to function.

We need migration no one is taking about legal migration, there is strict rules round that, and yes illegal was only 30k. As labour have just let the migrants know they won’t be popping off to Rwanda, it’s about to be open season here,
