How accurate is the exit poll?

I'm so happy to see it but panicking it'll be very wrong.

It's always broadly right.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 04/07/2024 23:25

DH came home tonight and said that everyone he spoke to today was voting reform! 🤯Fuck sake.
mass turn out in our area-polling station rammed all day.

VillageFete · 04/07/2024 23:25

Labour supporter/Labour voter here.

Read their manifesto a while back. I’ve dipped out of politics since Covid, just found it too depressing and hopeless.

I’m seeing a few themes tonight and was hoping someone could explain it for me whilst I make a pledge to educate myself better and keep up to date with Government policy.

Labour and women’s rights - what’s this all about?

Labour and taxes- Seeing comments about those who are fairly well paid (But not classed as high earners) With some savings being totally screwed. I don’t recall seeing anything about hoiking taxes up in their manifesto? Where do they stand on this?

PonyPatter44 · 04/07/2024 23:29

Reform is probably going to split the Tory vote... I'd love to see a handful of Reform MPs that didn't include Farage. I'm still not confident of a Labour landslide.

LizzieSiddal · 04/07/2024 23:29

Sir John Curtis just said on BBC that the Reform and SNP numbers were the figures they were least sure about. So fingers crossed they’ve got the Reform figures wrong!

They've pledged not to raise income tax, NI and VAT so lots of scope for tax rises elsewhere.

I’m so pleased you heard this too. I mentioned this on another thread and couldn’t believe it. I kept asking DH if I had misheard the 11,000 Reform votes. I’m appalled. I really am!

Sunderland was massively Brexity (that image of the cheering leave voters from the night of the referendum) so I don't think it's that surprising in some of these NE and Lincolnshire and Essex seats. Areas with lowest immigration being most anti it, of course.

Onemoreterm · 04/07/2024 23:34

Reform are picking up votes - scary

Yes 11,000 people went out to the polling station for the sole purpose of voting Reform ie for an organisation that is barely a political party, has no coherent manifesto, has no ideology and has few serious candidates. And 49% of people didn't vote at all. Both of these facts are absolutely terrifying.

Which part of the UK are you? How high was your Brexit vote?

YellowDayToday · 04/07/2024 23:36

So fucking scary the number of votes for Reform! Don’t people get it???

@JurassicClark "
Hearing Alistair Campbell correct Nadine Dorries "less" to "fewer" was my favourite clip"

I agree and I do love Alistair -but it was a bit of a dick move, really.

He's gone up in my estimation. Nadine Dorries is a Scouse Tory, which says all you need to know.

** I did like Edwina Currie despite her being a Scouse Tory.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 04/07/2024 22:10

I really, really and very genuinely hope that Labour are going to be as country changing as a lot of people think (I’m beyond doubtful), because if they fuck this up then we’ll be going the same way as France and a lot of Europe and hello Reform.

This is entirely what will happen.

So, so many voted 'not Tory' or 'for a change'. Not FOR Labour.

Labour will be a car crash, a fandango of trying to please wildly disparate demands. Keir has flip-flopped all over the place in recent weeks; he will not be able to enforce any coherent party discipline.

They'll be lucky to get one term before the erstwhile Red Wall who were gulled into voting Tory, then who reverted to Labour, will next vote whatever Reform will be called next.

We need a) political education, b) critical thinking skills to be taught, and c) PR in the UK.

Onedaystronger · 04/07/2024 23:38

@lovelysunshine22 why have you called AR "vile and foul mouthed"?

Stickortwister · 04/07/2024 23:39

Hopefully this is the UK reaching peak fascism. Tale as old of time that in difficult economic circumstances that people reach for easy solutions ( and morally repugnant grubby opportunists).
Never have I been so pleased with our first past the post voting system for once its not working in the best interests of the tories.

Fordian · 04/07/2024 23:39

Takoneko · 04/07/2024 22:11

It’s also looking worse than expected for the SNP. Going down to 10 seats is a painful result for them.

Well, maybe if their manifesto wasn't so mad and un-deliverable, and maybe if they hadn't so aggressively endorsed men in dresses, they have retained some credibility.

West Midlands; embarrassed to say but most of the west mids was leave 🤬

Onedaystronger · 04/07/2024 23:42

As @HauntedBungalow said Reform will be a shambles "Yes 11,000 people went out to the polling station for the sole purpose of voting Reform ie for an organisation that is barely a political party, has no coherent manifesto, has no ideology and has few serious candidates" . Will their incompetence as a party not become clear once they have some seats?

Fundays12 · 04/07/2024 23:48

I am not a labour supporter generally but I voted labour this election. As a Scot I have voted in the past SNP and the Conservatives (years ago).

However today at the polling station I looked at my kids (2 of whom has been spectacularly failed by the SNP's "Curriculum of Excellence") which is absolutely terrible and basically teaches kids at age 6 to academiacally be about age 3 at best. As you can imaging it has left a generation of Scottish kids academiacally behind plus the continuous ASN budgets I actually thought "no SNP your not getting my vote".

I am also sick of hearing a vote for SNP is a vote for independence. No it's not!!!! I love the UK. I love that in a few days time we are heading down to England for a few days to meet my English cousins. I love being part of the UK and I vote for better education, better Inclusion and funding in schools and the SNP are not interested in any of that at the moment. They want independence at any cost!! The Tory government they are run by rich men who don't understand the choices people on power incomes have to make day to day.

P.S this is just my view and this time labour got my vote.

Fordian · 04/07/2024 23:48

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 04/07/2024 23:10

Not nervous. Just a bit wistful and uncomfortable. Imagine what would be possible with a genuinely excellent party leader.

Including one who was unafraid to take a stance on protecting women and girls' rights.

💯 yes.

I'm interested that this has all but been ignored here on MUMSNET.

Labour have huge numbers of candidates who will not state what a woman is.

I am shocked at how many women appear to not be that bothered about their hard won rights.

Onedaystronger · 04/07/2024 23:49

@lovelysunshine22 it was a genuine question and I'm curious to know the answer. . If you genuinely believe that she is "vile and foul mouthed" and have posted that on the thread it would be helpful if you could explain why.

I met someone IRL yesterday who was adamant that AR is stupid. When I asked why they explained that they didn't like her accent, as it made her sound "thick and common" (their words not mine). Their explaination was very helpful as it clarified exactly how valid that person's opinions are, and what type of values they have.

Dibbydoos · 04/07/2024 23:53

Every election, yes. But the exit polls are notmally accurate so hoping the map is red tomorrow when I wake up cos I cant stay up all night....

HauntedBungalow · 04/07/2024 22:57

LOL you know what I mean. Greens poll far higher than the number of seats they get, they'll be lucky to even get five, but because they have a consistent and coherent ideology and structure they can do the job that an opposition needs to do. Just probably will not get the chance to do it.

I did understand, I was just being flip! 😁

I may not entirely agree with you on the coherence of the Greens but agree to differ and I understand your point!

LuluBlakey1 · 05/07/2024 00:08

It's terrible that anyone has seriously voted for Reform and everything they stand for and their entire lack of structure or plan to make any of it happen. It scares me what is happening to our country. Apparently they attract a lot of young voters. The Tories have many older voters many of whom will not be here at the next election. They have a huge job to do to re-build a base of voters to replace those they have already lost but also those who they will lose. They have admitted they are struggling to attract young people.
