A bit of French elections news

https://x.com/AlexTaylorNews/status/1808528927196950820

Break ! According to 1st poll just released after the 2nd round "stand-downs" and full candidate-list was closed yesterday, Le Pen's Far Right RN doesn't come anywhere near the absolute majority it would need to govern (289 seats) and is predicted to get only 190 - 220 seats

Just catching up on the threads - given what could have been this 👆is a relief.

Might stay up till midnight @VoteOutToHelpOut but am tempted to wait till dawn - torn.
Really glad you got the proxy vote sorted @medianewbie

Anyway, this is funny but yet definitely not funny at all.

Just reflecting on the fact that my school might be the last to be judged under the current brutal OFSTED regime.

I thought I'd post this from John O'Farrell in The Guardian about being a Labour supporter:-

I'm not going to say "I told you so" until after Sunday but I did predict that the French two round system would allow the French to register their protest vote in the first round and then be more sensible in the 2nd round Smile

Reading that list of all those odds of people losing their seats reminds me of one of the pleasures I get from General Election night - all the names of the constituencies that you don't hear so much about the rest of the time.

See also countries taking part in the Olympics Opening Ceremony 😀

There must be someone game for a laugh for a naked run down a high street somewhere if that happens.

£10 from me to a charity of their choice if they want to setup a page.

Funnily enough it is actually blue bin day here tomorrow. Blue = recycling though, and I don't want recycled Tories.

You've just reminded me: I need to put our purple bin out (glass) for tomorrow. It only gets picked up every 8 weeks

We used to have blue bags and then boxes for paper and cardboard. Now we have an insert in the recycling bin.

To be fair to the council they have managed to mess up collections whatever is used.

cakeorwine · 03/07/2024 19:26

I do wonder what would happen if we had the French system.
To be elected in the first round, a candidate is required to secure an absolute majority of votes cast, and also to secure votes equal to at least 25% of eligible voters in their constituency.

Should none of the candidates satisfy these conditions, a second round of voting ensues.

Most constituencies proceed to a second round election. Only first-round candidates with the support of at least 12.5% of eligible voters are allowed to participate, but if only 1 candidate meets that standard the two candidates with the highest number of votes in the first round may continue to the second round.

I think that would make things more interesting here.

Worth a read from Rafael Behr - tackling the assumption that Starmers success is solely because of a poor adversary.
