SIL has worked as a presiding officer at most recent elections. She said that they had a major shortage, both of presiding officers and clerks this election as because it's the first week of the Scottish school holidays, a lot of people are away Shock

So a whole load of new people have had to be found and trained - quite apart from everyone having to be trained in the new ID requirements (as we've not had an election since the law was changed). Plus I think she mentioned a whole load of forms that have to be filled in for postal vote firms that are handed in at the polling station (which can now be any polling station in the constituency).

Plus any new clerks or presiding officers will have had to apply belatedly for a postal vote as by definition, they will be in attendance at the polling station they're working at for the entire voting period.

Where? Who?

NoDishiForRishi · 04/07/2024 19:09

Just less than 3 hours to go... I might but titanic on... that will take me to the exit poll quite nicely...

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2024 19:12

The election date should have been before any summer holidays begin. There is no chance they would have set the GE date for end of July or August so that it clashed with English school holidays.

FairPlay there are a lot of bewildered posters asking why on earth they'd vote Reform.

Evenstar · 04/07/2024 19:19

My coffee table ops desk is ready for tonight, I may be peaking a bit early 😂

I've seen similar wording elsewhere on MN - words to the effect that his schooling and career choices indicate he's actually Mr Average and therefore the ideal person to be anti-establishment 🙄

List of bellwether seats if anyone wants to join in with marking them off

Ds just got home from work and we had a managing our expectations chat. Didn't make me feel any better sadly

L1ttledrummergirl · 04/07/2024 19:24

It's been a long day today. I'm full of cold, it's dh birthday, and work was very full on.

Dd went to vote earlier today, she said they weren't queuing, but there was a steady flow. When dh and I went, the officers said they had just been busy, but we had timed it well as they were back to a steady stream. They looked exhausted and glad of the lull.

Everyone voting looked happy and relaxed, there was none of the nervous tension of the last few times. We're having dinner now in front of the tennis, then hopefully a nap before tonight.

tobee · 04/07/2024 19:26

Anyone up for doing a quick reminder as to who is who name change wise please?

Just so happens that "round our way" the only game in town is Labour. Which as someone who isn't really a big fan of the Conservatives suits me just fine. Quite happy to add my tiny little voice to the tens of thousands who also seem to prefer not to have a Conservative member of parliament.

However, if it so happened a LibDem candidate was so placed, I would vote for them.

This is why insults and attacks are wasted on me (quite aside from me being an old battleaxe). I'm not ideologically wedded to any single party. And if people want my advice, they shouldn't be either. The moment you become an uncritical voting automaton for any party is the day that party crosses you off the list of "people we care about". And usually, like the fabled slow boiled frog, you never realise. Which is why over the years pensioners have slowly become the Tories targets. After all, if they all vote Tory anyway .....

Absolutely.

I'm a massive swing voter.

I sit very centrically in my thinking. This has made me vote LD in the past.

I vote for whatever i think is best for the country at the time. Do I always get it right? No! But that's why I'm not wedded to a party - so next time I go in with an open mind and vote again for what I thinks best.

Both ds and I have been to out our x in the box this evening.

I want to GTTO but more so GBO Wink

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/07/2024 19:50

As someone whose sister was an ICU nurse during Covid I really can’t bring myself to vote Tory even to keep reform out.

This seat seems to be a 3 way toss up so I’ve just gone with the one acceptable choice that stands a chance of winning.
