Tiny daft pleasures in the day (please add yours)

I have just noticed how much (quiet) joy I get, while making use of the toilets at my work, from karate-chopping the toilet paper to cut it after I have selected an appropriate length. Works best with work-place continuous roll - for some reason the perforations in domestic toilet paper inhibit the effectiveness of the technique. Any other tiny joys I should keep a look-out for?

walking bare foot into the garden and feeling the grass on the soles of my feet

Yesterday I spent £2.50 on a new nail varnish and I LOVE the colour. I had a tough day at work but looking at my neon nails made me smile!

Driving my car. I love cars and I love driving. Due to work and family commitments I rarely have the chance to drive. So even just a 3 mile journey to visit the littles is a pleasure. Learning to drive and being able to afford a car are 2 of my greatest achievements. Also gives me independence.

Yes, this! Learnt to drive 40 years ago this September and it’s still probably the best thing I ever accomplished. I really love the freedom it gives me and there’s a tiny part of me that’s dead chuffed I managed it!

Adding my agreement to the dog cuddlers, the hot water enjoyers, and especially the electric blanket users. Something very simple but pleasurable in these things!

I found a crème egg today in the back of a cupboard. I’ve just eaten it. Yum.
Clean, line dried bedding, shower, clean pjs can’t beat it.

I time leaving work so I am driving home when the local radio station do the afternoon word puzzle. It’s not usually too difficult but it makes me think and I love the light bulb moment when I get the answer. If I’m off during the week I arrange it so I’m in the car to listen in. Not the same listening from home!

Tadpole10 · 02/07/2024 20:09

Frogs coming back to the back yard, that were tadpoles here last year.

Seeing a bee on a flower.

DH bringing me a cup of tea in bed every morning.

Falling asleep to an audiobook.

Drying washing outside.

Looking at DC asleep, and seeing my baby still in there even though grown up a lot now.

I got to leave work half an hour early because the boss was leaving early and I'm not a key holder.

TeenDivided · 02/07/2024 20:12

Special numbers on the car mileometer. Today we went through 54321.

At this time of year, going for walks during golden hour.

I love seeing the trees but there's something about how the sun hits the leaves of silver birches during golden hour that makes them really beautiful and just brings out the best in them.

Maybe it's not daft but it does feel a bit silly going on a walk just to see some leaves.

SnailsFromTheToeMountain · 02/07/2024 20:38

Swinging around the bannisters on the back stairs to the office (as long as no one's around).

Having overnight oats with seeds and fruit for breakfast. I feel as though I've remembered about and cared for myself.

My plant containers, especially the one with the trailing fuchsia.

Merlin app - can now identify all the bird song I hear in the garden. It’s fascinating ( and addictive).

Ooh, thank you for that - shall be downloading imminently as I’m always out listening to the birds and wondering who’s who 😊

CurlsandCurves · 02/07/2024 20:40

Don’t know where @TravellingT got her lovely wafty trousers from. But I got some this week from Nutmeg in Morrisons. 4 colours available I think and they’re lovely

I've hit peak daft pleasure today for the week. Day off started with coffee and breakfast in peace once the kids had left for school. Got all the towels and bedding washed and dried. Bathrooms and bedrooms thoroughly cleaned, rest of the house had a usual sort out, Hoover etc. Did a workout.

Now about to get into fresh bedding, DH is working away so it’s all mine. Taking my iPad with me to watch any old rubbish in my comfy fresh bed. Bliss.

Putting the dishwasher and washing machine on at the same time makes me inordinately pleased!

Hearing a really lovely line of poetry/clever song lyric

The joy of huge, colourful, structural hollyhocks and foxgloves

Seeing the first magnolia blossom

Lighting the wood burner on a chilly day and enjoying both its warmth and the mesmerising pattern of the flames

Finding the perfect present for someone

The first bite of a fragrant peach

The smell of freshly picked tomatoes from the greenhouse

The first sip of iced coffee on a hot day

The scent of suncream in the sunshine - holidays, freedom!

Interesting things on Radio 4

The bliss of a good book in a comfy nook

Seeing my children grow and become themselves

My little cat plonking himself on my shoulder

Petal7 · 02/07/2024 21:20

Also, "running" up the stairs on all fours at speed when alone in the house

Being in a book shop alone with time to browse

Weighing out the exact amount first go when cooking

Fairy lights in the dark in the winter

Flowers, any flowers

My husband doing small, thoughtful things

Funny messages/game scores from my family Whatsapp group

After being teacher for 30 years, now having a job where I get a whole hour for lunch.

Have recently started taking Ancient & Brave collagen and also bought their little brass scoop. I love carefully scooping up the collagen and slowly stirring it into my morning coffee. Makes me feel a bit like a medieval alchemist making a herbal tincture.

We adopted a new rescue cat after losing our lovely old girl to cancer earlier this year. We’re now almost three months in and have a lovely little routine where after dinner he sleeps in his bed in the kitchen, but bang on 8.30 he comes to be brushed. He loves being brushed and rolls around purring - it’s so sweet! Initially I was worried about having another cat so soon, but we’re now at the point that while I still miss my girl every day, he does feel like “our cat”, and I hope he feels like this is his home and we are his people.

watchuswreckthemic · 02/07/2024 21:50

Love this thread!
When a song comes on the radio that I haven't heard for ages and allows me to belt it out badly out of tune.
Watching the local birds and their little personalities always makes me chuckle.
Walking my youngest to school- I rarely got to do this with my oldest and it makes me so happy that I can hyper focus on our relationship (whilst I try and do that the other end of the day with my eldest)

AllCatsAreAutistic · 02/07/2024 22:04

Watering my plants very early in the morning.
The scent of my roses.
Remembering that my mortgage is now paid off.

MerelyPlaying · 02/07/2024 22:13

The way a cat’s head just exactly matches the shape of my cupped hand.

I also love emptying the dishwasher (don’t shoot me!). The fact that everything is so beautifully clean, and it all has a place to go in my cupboards gives me a real feeling of satisfaction. It’s about the only form of housework I enjoy.

Sun on my face in the garden after a cold winter /spring

JaffaCake70 · 02/07/2024 22:24

Driving my car.

I passed my driving test 3 years ago at the age of 51. For all of my adult life I took public transport to and from work, waited at cold, dark, desolate tram stations at the crack of dawn in the middle of winter.

The luxury and convenience of having my own car fills me with joy every single day. No more smelly packed tram (where I once even accidentally sat in human excrement).

I am eternally grateful for my car 🚗

MissingMoominMamma · 02/07/2024 22:29

I often take photos of customers at work, and then airdrop them to them. I love that space age thingy the phones do when you put them together 😁.

BigWordAtlas · 02/07/2024 22:51

My spaniels splashing in the sea

Being the first one in the office on my days in

Waking up one minute before the alarm and having a micro lie-in

All wonderful!
