Urgent help Cancun Mexico with TUI Beryl Hurricane

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 08:27

We need urgent advice please. We are flying to Cancun in Mexico this Thursday landing at 2 p.m. local time. It is an all inclusive package holiday from TUI. I called TUI to cancel or switch to a different location today. They refused and said that they are monitoring the situation and that if it is a concern that they will contact us tomorrow or Wednesday. Since this is a natural disaster I am not sure why they are not allowing us to cancel. Could you please help by providing any ideas what we can do?

Hey @Gilmoregirly we we’re booked on the same flight which has now been delayed until tomorrow with no option of a refund, however we decided we didn’t want to risk going to Cancun at this moment especially with our toddler, so we called Tui and requested a full refund which they have agreed to so if your not wanting to still go I would call them and cancel! Hope this helps! 😊

Gilmoregirly · 04/07/2024 12:36

Thank you @Garthur91 . I am going to do the same.

If you ask for a refund or better still look and see if you can find an alternative destination leaving tomorrow and they will switch you, my parents were switched due to the wildfires, TUI were great about it

Gilmoregirly · 04/07/2024 14:41

@Garthur91 i tried and TUI is not letting me have a full refund or change it to next week. I even offered to pay the difference between the packages. They are not flexible at all and seems to determined to drop us in to the hurricane asap! I am very very frustrated.^^

I've just seen they're moving sea turtle eggs from the Cancun beaches!

Thought of you !

Anyone experienced this type of a delay from TUI, do you know what will happen now? How much time would TUI give us to get to the airport for the rescheduled holiday?

I went to Cancun a good few years ago around this time too, our outgoing flight was delayed 12 hours & we eventually arrived to a downpour like I'd never experienced but it was night time so we just went to bed & we woke up to blue skies with a slight wind so honestly I'm sure you'll be fine

I would send them a link to this via their chat on Facebook.

It's not right that others are being offered a full refund. Their social team is pretty good.

I'm a travel agent btw. Not just a know all! Grin

FWIW for a bit of overview the latest forecast for the airports are out, covering up to 0700 tomorrow AM Cancún time….for the benefit of those sitting it out there the following might be of interest

Max wind for Cancun airport in the early AM forecasts 45 mph
Being further south and more exposed Cozumel forecast to get a good clobbering with a max of gusts to 80 mph and Tumel is forecast to get 70 mph…

Everywhere is meant to get heavy Thunderstorms and lots and lots and lots of rain.

Also for overview there are currently mid PM UK time about half a dozen flights ex Europe heading for Cancun, (including one BA and one Condor) presumably looking to arrive, turn and get out before the weather deteriorates.

Gilmoregirly · 04/07/2024 16:19

It is after our landing I am worried about. I wish I know more about curfew etc before going

Thanks @notimagain you seem to be quite knowledgable! There seems to be a lot of disinformation and stories going about.

In your opinion do you think flights due to land in Cancun tomorrow afternoon will happen?

notimagain · 04/07/2024 17:26

@TeeR

“In your opinion do you think flights due to land in Cancun tomorrow afternoon will happen?”

For now I’m going to sit on the fence I’m afraid, I don’t think the forecast wind is the biggest problem for the airport, but the thunderstorms and very heavy rain are predicted up to midday UTC/0700 Cancun time could well be an issue due the potential for flooding etc..

I wonder if TUI (and others) will make a few phone calls in the AM UK time to their contacts in Cancun and then make a decision, maybe not too long before flights are due to leave the UK.

Gilmoregirly · 04/07/2024 18:03

Ok I have exhausted all the options of contacting TUI and they are adamant that the flight tomorrow will go ahead and no options offered to change or refund. I guess it is to wait and see for now.

has your itinerary on the app updated with the new date? Mine hasn't and the flight isn't showing on tomorrow's departure board either.

Your joking!
We only had flights booked as we were going to an air BnB but we really had to push for it and tell them that all our accommodation had been cancelled (which it had)
It might be worth telling them that due to them postponing the flight without knowledge of when they would be postponing until, you’ve had to go back to work so as not to waste your holiday time and be able to take the holiday you have paid for.
I’d really push it, speak to a manager if necessary because they should not be sending anyone into a hurricane!

@TeeR no nothing is updated in the app. Also in the email this morning they said to come to airport 3 hrs early!

Looks like it’ll be an early start but then might have the flight cancelled while we are in the airport. It’s not their fault, they don’t know how this will pan out but it is frustrating.

I can’t believe they're essentially 'making' you go when this is part of the headlines on Sky News....

Just in case anyone in interested I’m in the hotel room in Playa Del Carmen which is closer to the eye than Cancun. We’ve got heavy wind and a ton of rain but we still have power and obviously internet. I’m hoping the damage is not too bad. The resort took things seriously yesterday to try to prevent damage. According to local forecasts the worst should be through in an hour or two. It’s sun rise at 6 so we should be able to see more then whether trees are down etc. I’m the only one of my family awake (because I needed the loo) the other 3 are sleeping through it all .

i hope you get sensible news on your flights soon op.

ButtSurgery · 05/07/2024 11:27

The HMS Trent is going to the Cayman Islands (a British Overseas Territory) about 400miles away from Cancun.

There are other articles though about Mexico - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3g60982178o

Palm trees blow on a Mexican beach

Hurricane Beryl batters Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula

Thousands in the region, home to tourist hotspots Tulum and Cancún, are being evacuated.

Hurricanes/tropical storms evolve, what happens in parts of Cancun may not be a direct C&P of what happened in the Cayman Islands.

FWIW there’s no sign that I can see so far of any of the usual departures from Europe heading for the area.

notimagain · 05/07/2024 12:11

Ok, bearing in mind one swallow doesn’t make a summer, etc, and that the aviation tracking site data can be incomplete and at times inaccurate I’m just going to mention that the Newcastle -> Cancun flight has just departed (just after 1200 UK time) pretty much on schedule.

Edit to add that since posting that a TUI Manchester - > Cancun departure has just popped up as well.
