Urgent help Cancun Mexico with TUI Beryl Hurricane

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 08:27

We need urgent advice please. We are flying to Cancun in Mexico this Thursday landing at 2 p.m. local time. It is an all inclusive package holiday from TUI. I called TUI to cancel or switch to a different location today. They refused and said that they are monitoring the situation and that if it is a concern that they will contact us tomorrow or Wednesday. Since this is a natural disaster I am not sure why they are not allowing us to cancel. Could you please help by providing any ideas what we can do?

The latest NOAA advisory shows Cancun just outside the possible path of the hurricane now. It's the interactive map on this page.

www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/055033.shtml?cone#contents

Last night cancun was right on the edge of the cone of the possible path and now it is just outside it so it is getting less likely Cancun will be hit by Beryl. Additionally the Mexico coast is forecast so see Beryl just as it weakens from a Cat 1 hurricane to a tropical storm so it will not be anywhere near as powerful as the pictures you are seeing from the islands today. It's currently cat 4.

AccuWeather tells me that Friday in Cancun it will be 30 degrees, cloudy, wind gusts up to 50mph and 6.3cm of rain. Unless things change I wouldn't expect TUI to change your holiday at all for that. I would start packing if I were you! Take something to read for Friday as you will be stuck in the hotel due to the lashing rain.

Travelcrazy · 03/07/2024 07:48

@momager1 I am coming to Punta Cana on Friday, how is the weather looking now?

I hope the poor Jamaicans keep safe :(

fieldsofbutterflies · 03/07/2024 08:20

Whatever you do, do NOT cancel the holiday yourselves. You run the risk of the flight going without you, at which point your insurance company will not pay out because you could have travelled.

Yep, this is vital. If you cancel but your holiday goes ahead, you won't get anything.

@Amsx where is this information please

I think there's a lot of misinformation flying around (see what I did there😂), the Birmingham flight for today is still going ahead and there's a BA flight from Gatwick still going ahead, a Tui from Glasgow still going ahead. The most recent post on Twitter from Tui about it is that they are closely monitoring it. I don't think anything has been cancelled - yet.

@CrotchetyQuaver thank you for this. We are keeping our fingers and toes crossed. It is the lack of communication from TUI that made me panic. There are no emails or any updates of reassurance in the app. I am not used to hurricanes and lot of Americans in Tripadvisor are advising to cancel.

The point of booking through an agent is that they should take the worry out of decision-making.
Just wait until they contact you - if they don't cancel the trip, your insurance is unlikely to pay out if you randomly cancel

Yes I’m checked in for the Bham flight and it’s due to depart on time.

i had a message on the TUI app saying there is a hurricane alert in the area but hotels in Mexico are used to dealing with these and to follow any that is given by TUI or the authorities.

Obviously not ideal but there are several alerts every year , this one is just a bit earlier than usual.

I’m praying for now that the impact on Jamaica is not as severe as is being anticipated.

Gilmoregirly · 03/07/2024 09:19

@Filamumof9 thanks for your reply and I am glad you are safe. Please stay safe and I am praying and hoping for Jamaicans and Cayman Islands to stay safe too. Thanks also for everyone who keeps updating and reassuring. I have half packed and and then unpacked and repacked again at the back of reassuring thoughts coming from this thread. I hope you all know how much both me and my partner appreciate this.

My flight is on the 7th from
Gatwick with TUI, feeling a little anxious too about what’s happening. Hoping for the best 🤞

Rainmakesrainbows · 03/07/2024 09:49

We are due to fly from UK to Cancun on Friday with our 2 kids then our hotel is in the riviera maya region so I have fears of getting stuck at the airport if the transfer can't go and I have many of the same worries as you. Trying not to overthink but it's so hard not to.

HappierTimesAhead · 03/07/2024 10:02

Even with the hurricane, I am massively jealous of all of you flying off to Mexico! It's amazing! The hotels are out of this world, you will have a fab time! TUI have been providing package holidays for years and I very much doubt they will send you into a dangerous situation or leave you stranded (I know people will have had bad experiences but no one talks about the good ones where they were taken care of!).

Gilmoregirly · 03/07/2024 10:31

@HappierTimesAhead this is very true we had very good experience with TUI in Turkey but the there were no issues with weather, etc. Due to hurricane my rational thinking has gone out of the window. Due to many reassurance from this thread I am packing again.

@lifeturnsonadime

Just in case you are still on line FWIW the aviation weather forecast for the Cancun airport and immediate area for the next 18 hours is quite benign..

What some would maybe think of as “standard Caribbean”, no strong winds and a chance of showers late PM into the evening local time.

Have to say IMO some of the rumours being chucked in last night weren’t helpful and looked to be a case of stirring things/emotions up, rather than attempting to inform.

Gilmoregirly · 03/07/2024 10:37

@notimagain thank you. This is very reassuring.

I honestly think you will have a fantastic holiday! I went during hurricane season a few years ago and it rained for two minutes one day.

Please keep us updated and post a poolside pic once you get there to make us all jealous!😂

Gilmoregirly · 03/07/2024 10:41

@HappierTimesAhead for sure I will. I think I owe it to all of you 💐

Just to add, we’re all now fully invested and can’t wait for you to post the cocktail by the pool pic on Saturday ☀️🍹

notimagain · 03/07/2024 10:44

P.S. to avoid any confusion/alarm the 18 hour comment is because that’s when the latest airport forecast runs out/furthest ahead it looks (0600 UTC tomorrow AM).

I’m not implying or hinting that things will suddenly change at 18 hours and 1 minute.

ButtSurgery · 03/07/2024 10:46

This is the current projection for the route. Cancun is currently outside it, but remains on watch.

If you look at the actual hurricane, you'll see the worst winds are in the middle, the rest of the storm is made up of high winds but not hurricane force.

This part of the world is very much accustomed to dealing with these things and will be as prepared as they can. The Royal Navy and US Navy or Coast Guard are bobbing about as well to go in and assist in the areas which aren't so well prepared or get hit harder then they can cope with (lack of money and infrastructure, Commonwealth / Overseas Territories etc).

@Travelcrazy Good morning from 27 degrees partly sunny and very little breezes @ 6:40 am in Punta Cana! No damages anywhere and resorts will be back in full swing today except for water excursions and water sports. These will resume tomorrow. Have you been to Punta Cana before?

Filamumof9 · 03/07/2024 13:01

Gilmoregirlie, hope you will have a lovely holiday.

@Gilmoregirly is the flight still on? I’ve seen on Twitter that Cancun airport has put its emergency protocols in place and say to check with your airline. People there are buying extra supplies and boarding up windows as it’s expected to hit as a hurricane in the early hours of Friday. Sorry you’re having this hassle with your holiday and hope you can get it switched to another date or place.

Gilmoregirly · 03/07/2024 16:39

@PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice i haven’t heard anything from TUI so I assume it is still on.

The only thing I could find was this: https://porqueyoamoacancun.com/aeropuerto-de-cancun-activa-protocolos-de-proteccion-civil-por-huracan-beryl-que-debes-saber/

it doesn’t really mean anything as such just keep in touch with your airline and they are preparing the airport.

I found that United Airlines and Air Canada are warning potential disruption to flights on Friday which would make sense as the storm is meant to hit late in the evening on Thursday or early Friday morning.

I may well be wrong but I suspect it will still go ahead due to it landing early afternoon Thursday.

What I don’t know is if this is usual or not anyway it is now a hurricane of cat 2 when it reaches the Cancun area.
