Urgent help Cancun Mexico with TUI Beryl Hurricane

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 08:27

We need urgent advice please. We are flying to Cancun in Mexico this Thursday landing at 2 p.m. local time. It is an all inclusive package holiday from TUI. I called TUI to cancel or switch to a different location today. They refused and said that they are monitoring the situation and that if it is a concern that they will contact us tomorrow or Wednesday. Since this is a natural disaster I am not sure why they are not allowing us to cancel. Could you please help by providing any ideas what we can do?

@Jimbowen thank you so much for replying. I hope you are having a lovely holiday. The weather tomorrow looks lovely and sunny so I guess you will be ok with excursions tomorrow.

TUI have cancelled a lot of flights to Mexico this evening.

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 21:32

@Amsx where is this information please

@Gilmoregirly

I think another thing to bear in mind is by the time you get anywhere near boarding your aircraft on Thursday the weather forecasters will have a much better handle on how strong this weather system still is and it’s track relative the wherever your hotel is.

Jimbowen · 02/07/2024 21:34

The way I read it is the weather forecast do not factor in hurricanes as the trajectory, power, etc is unknown. You have to look at the hurricane center website and factor this in yourself. Our forecast is correct until Thursday morning when the current projection shows we get hit but it will hopefully be down graded by then or keeping shifting south. Whatever happens I hope everyone in it’s path stays safe.

WonderingWanda · 02/07/2024 21:47

The trajectory always looks horrendous because they can't be accurate so it looks like it's going to swamp the entire Yucatan, across a 400 mile area but the storm probably has a radius of 40miles total and it could it 300 miles south of Cancun.

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 21:56

But the current models looks like it is moving more north

@notimagain this is very true. We will see tomorrow and see but for now we are leaning towards cancelling. @Amsx Please where did you see the cancellations

It's too far out for certainty.

Whatever you do, do NOT cancel the holiday yourselves. You run the risk of the flight going without you, at which point your insurance company will not pay out because you could have travelled.

Await the updates. Get off that TripAdvisor group which seems to be hysterical and not factual!

A Cat 1 storm is about 75mph winds, so just a good UK standard of storm which will be blowing on past you very quickly and you can crack on with the rest of the holiday. It doesn't last long. It's also showing more likely to be tropical storm winds, which is about 39mph or less.

My uncle is out there now and flies home on Wed evening - very few precautions are being put in place locally because they are waiting to see what Beryl does!

Have faith that these enormous travel companies do know what they are doing and the pilots have huge training and experience as well as protocols for whether a flight is safe to proceed. They do not err on the side of "fuck it, we'll give it a go".

Jimbowen · 02/07/2024 22:56

Not too worried about it just now in Playa Del Carmen. What will be will be.

Hey queen! I also fly to Cancun on Thursday from Gatwick - just our luck that this is the first hurricane before July 4th in 100 years, not to mention it being cat 5. TUI gave me the general statement of ‘we are monitoring it and the safety of our customers is important” which is utter lies because TUI flew people out today from Birmingham to Jamaica despite them getting the worst of the hurricane tomorrow - I feel so sorry for those people because I wouldn’t have gotten on the plane. Anyways, I have the ‘zoom earth’ app installed and it shows the hurricane to which the path changes regularly so I’m keeping an eye on it for reassurance as I’m also very nervous. I’m trying to not let it ruin my holiday but I’m thinking, what the heck am I going to do cooped up in a hotel for days - gonna be so boring right?

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 23:07

@ButtSurgery thanks for knocking common sense in to me. I showed your post to my partner and we are both laughing 😂. @Jimbowen looks lovely and fingers crossed it will be the same when this storm passes.

@LanaLCx solidarity with you. Our main worry is getting to the hotel from airport. Do you think TUI coaches will turn up?

momager1 · 02/07/2024 23:14

@Gilmoregirly it is still cat 5, it is 200 miles off our island still. we have had a windy day but calm now..several hard downpours. Down here in the islands we watch this stuff very closely. The storm has moved a little north but not alot, it is staying on course. It will hit jamaica tomorrow. Sadly I think they are in for a rough ride. Going over jamaica will cause some downgrades in the wind forces. when it arrives in cancun it SHOULD be in the tropical storm catagory by then. If it is still hurricane you will get cancelled. Trust me, the islands rely on tourism and they will not fly tourists in if the situation is bad. They will close the airport and you will get cancelled. Try not to worry. We have not even shut our windows today (except the ones over the beds ) Cat 1 is just a really bad storm. This system is moving so very fast and I just saw some photos of sandals in barbados..hit yesterday, all back to normal today even if a bit clouded over. The other thing you could do is ask for a change to dominican republic (punta cana) as it is gone by us pretty much and no damage. As of tomorrow we should be back in mostly sunshine.

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 23:18

@momager1 stay safe and I am so glad you are safe. Thanks for your reply. You all are doing an amazing job of calming me. I think TUI owes you a lot 😂

Absolutely they wouldn’t leave us stranded at the airport, there’s always TUI reps at the airport and are there to sort any issues :)

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 23:27

@LanaLCx 🤔 I tend to think the worst. If they flew people today to Jamaica given the situation tomorrow. I am not sure.

I also live on one of the Caribbean islands,. It is very early this year to have a hurricane in comparison to other years, but it is being monitored closely in het Caribbean and people here have had lots of experience with hurricanes. So rest assured, they would not let you fly to Cancun if it is badly hit by a hurricane.

momager1 · 02/07/2024 23:43

@Filamumof9 I hope whatever island you are on..you are also safe.

Filamumof9 · 03/07/2024 00:14

@momager1 luckily we are situated quite low in the Caribbean, so often have heavy rains or totally no wind instead of being in the course of hurricanes. Every once in a few years we are hit or we experience torrent rains and subsequent damages.
Hope you are safe.

we are good. We live in Punta Cana.. we had some strong winds and three or four heavy downpours.. but now... looks like back to normal ..maybe a bit of showers or gusts tonight. Right now I am going to take the dogs for a walk as it is just a bit breezy and they have been stuck to backyard all day. Then movie night for the husband and I .

Filamumof9 · 03/07/2024 02:54

They predicted rain here, but it was sunny and humid all day. Enjoy the movie night in.

Iseethesilverlining · 03/07/2024 03:39

Just hang tight and wait. I am very used to Mexico hurricane season. You won’t know till much nearer the time where it is heading - and gov.uk travel advice will update as and when needed so keep an eye on that. Both the Mexican government and Tui are used to this, have well practiced routines and good communications set up. It’s just too early yet. And don’t forget that on those hurricane maps the arc doesn’t show an area to be hit, the cone shows the area where the storm might pass through - the wider the cone the more uncertainty about where it is heading.

Gilmoregirly · 02/07/2024 13:45

thank you all for all your input and it is really making me less panicky. This is a good lesson for me for booking a holiday without checking for hurricanes.

To be fair, although hurricane season they don’t usually happen until later.
