Teens and tights (it is bankrupting me!!)

YouBelongWithMe · 01/07/2024 20:54

I have two teen girls, seemingly unable to keep a pair of tights longer than a week between them.

They wear black tights to school and also like wearing tan tights with skirts.

Have tried Primark, M&S, nutmeg and now SNAG to no avail.

Is there any tried and tested tights that stand up to heavy-handed teens?!

Plucks, holes in toes? What's the issue?

Holes in toes, they can sew them. Give them a clothing allowance and maybe they'll be a bit more careful if they are the ones having to buy them?

Same

literally going to make her wear woolly tights

twistyizzy · 01/07/2024 21:08

Same and she refuses to wear anything thicker than 20 denier so I just buy 20 pairs at the start of each half term and pray they last!

Give them a tights budget and make them pay for their own tights. They might last longer then.

Tends to be holes. Not in toes, usually mid-thigh.

What is it with mid thigh holes???
I buy slightly too big ones so she has plenty of room but still the holes appear.

mitogoshi · 01/07/2024 21:18

No run tights?

AnOldCynic · 01/07/2024 21:18

Getting caught on the underside of desks?

Honestly, just ask them to be more careful otherwise they pay?

Bigoldmachine · 01/07/2024 21:27

Do they put them on the proper way? Ie bunch one leg up and put just the toe in then gently unravel, as opposed to just sticking your foot in from the top like in a pair of jeans. Makes a difference. IME a lot of tights holes are from toenails when putting them on

savoycabbage · 01/07/2024 21:29

My (very stylish) niece used to make holes in her school tights deliberately as her uniform was so strict it was the only way she could make hers more cutting edge.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 01/07/2024 21:31

Better tights in 80 dernier seem to do the job. Thinner ones rip really easily.

StillProcrastinating · 01/07/2024 21:33

Ripping holes in your tights mid thigh is a thing … I’d make them buy their own !

YouBelongWithMe · 01/07/2024 21:35

I have been contemplating Better Tights. Maybe i just give them £20 pwr term and tell them that's it. The issue is they don't have alternatives - they don't have black trousers to wear to school if they ruin all the tights.

If they've defeated snag then at this point all that's left is spray painting their legs black.

More seriously, I second the idea of a tights budget from which - crucially - they get to keep whatever they don't need to spend on the tights. It's a powerful incentive.

Devastated999 · 01/07/2024 21:35

Goodness, I don’t know as I was going to suggest Snag. I am very heavy handed, and never damaged any of my Snags. We used to dot clear varnish on any runs and colour in our legs with black felt pen for any holes.

Sorry, no help

It's definitely not on purpose. They are annoyed.

We had kids at school deliberately putting holes in tights as rebellion tactics.

Are they keeping up with the cool kids?

If they've defeated snags then it'd be trousers for me!

Meredusoleil · 01/07/2024 21:40

Long knee high or even over the knee socks instead?!?

YouJustDoYou · 01/07/2024 21:42

We used to carry clear nail varnish with us and varnish round any holes or ladders that appear so it doesn't get any bigger...

gillefc82 · 01/07/2024 21:42

Hedoine are good quality. Pricey but should last, especially the 100 denier.

kitsuneghost · 01/07/2024 21:44

Ripped tights look cool imo. I would still wear them
Could leggings be an option otherwise?

Borgonzola · 01/07/2024 21:44

Are the holes in thighs because of yanking them up?

For that I recommend the double pant. Pants tights pants. Stops the crotch from falling down and thus avoids discomfort and holes caused by grabbing at them to pull them up

When I was at school I had one pair of expensive tights, by Wolford I think, they last absolutely ages! Might be worth looking at?

Crinkle77 · 01/07/2024 21:50

Used to love my 60 denier M&S tights back in the day. Wouldn't dare get my legs out these days!
