Teens and tights (it is bankrupting me!!)

YouBelongWithMe · 01/07/2024 20:54

I have two teen girls, seemingly unable to keep a pair of tights longer than a week between them.

They wear black tights to school and also like wearing tan tights with skirts.

Have tried Primark, M&S, nutmeg and now SNAG to no avail.

Is there any tried and tested tights that stand up to heavy-handed teens?!

We used to carry clear nail varnish with us and varnish round any holes or ladders that appear so it doesn't get any bigger...

Yes this - the velcro on messenger bags was the worst culprit for snagging tights mid-thigh.

Technically our skirts were supposed to come to just above the knee. If we'd complied with that then the tights would have been protected.

Yy why don't they wear socks instead!

OMGsamesame · 02/07/2024 08:00

Wow @YouBelongWithMe I would never have got away with a skirt that short for school!

This is pretty tame in comparison to many. It's definitely one of the longer skirts I saw that evening! I teach many girls with micro tube skirts.

Or could try hold ups or stockings instead of tights?

LoobyDoop2 · 02/07/2024 08:10

Thigh holes are from hoiking up tights that are too small. Size up.

RubySloth · 02/07/2024 08:45

My daughter has the same issue and won't wear trousers but she has a mix of tights and knee high socks.

I've told her no knee high socks after this term because her feet are getting too big and they look too short (asda only do up until uk5)

Tights she goes through because she accidentally puts her fingers through them, so trying to push her towards trainer socks- most girls tend to wear them.

Bectoria2006 · 02/07/2024 09:46

Asda has been my go-to as my daughter was terrible for tights. They used to do an 80 and a 60 denier. Plus very cost effective!

My (very stylish) niece used to make holes in her school tights deliberately as her uniform was so strict it was the only way she could make hers more cutting edge.

Yes, my DC tells me that ripped tights are somewhat fashionable at the moment.

Tends to be holes. Not in toes, usually mid-thigh.

That's a fit issue then as they keep pulling them up in the thigh area. It sounds counter to your request but the more expensive tights you buy the better quality they are and longer they last. You could try sheertex, mega expensive though.

The problem is society and profit. Nylon is an extremely strongaterial but it is manufactured weak so not to last so you buy more tights!

Parentofaprincess · 21/09/2024 08:47

Try wolfords expensive but very durable

Hadalifeonce · 21/09/2024 08:51

I used to have to sew up my holes, as we couldn't afford to replace them. I think I had about 3/4 pairs.

Supernaturaldemons · 21/09/2024 08:53

Buy them 5 pairs each and a bottle of clear nail varnish… tights with holes can still be worn.

Buy them longer skirts- if skirt is knee length you won’t see mid thigh holes.

send them in trousers.

We used to wear 2 pairs so the ladders/holes were in different places and semi hid each other.

May09Bump · 21/09/2024 08:53

Doesn't help for Autumn, but for winter Next Thermal tights have been robust for my 8 year old who put holes in everything - think they go up to teenager and an adult version.

Except they all roll their skirts up, even at DDs school where they are meant to be knee length. So buying a longer skirt just = more rolls 😆

I assume you have not seen the length of skirt the girls wear.

Mischance · 21/09/2024 08:56

Darning?

twistyizzy · 21/09/2024 08:56

I have resorted to 15 boxes of 3 from Sainsbury's and praying that they last her until October half term!

Peachtastic · 21/09/2024 09:02

My teenager wears tights from Shein, they're a revelation..

They are mega thick, fleece lined actually. But, from the outside, they look like really thin tan or sheer black tights. People always ask her if her legs aren't cold in the winter as they look like such thin tights or bare legs! 🤯

They don't get holes as they're so thick.

Do they have longer nails?

They need to learn how to look after their tights. I wear "snag" or "better tights" and have had the same ones for over 5 years

We did this to get to school and back but not in school- we had a very very strict uniform and would have just had endless detention.

I got detention for having a thin elastic bobble in my hair that wasn’t navy or black.

YouBelongWithMe · 21/09/2024 09:07

No long nails - both girls play guitar so their nails are short and stubby!!

Tried Snag, ripped.

I did what you all suggested and bought six pairs of Primark tights and told her no more until Oct. She's only ruined one so far ...

100 denier from Better Tights are good - v thick tights easier to mend too.

Melonjuice · 21/09/2024 10:49

They need to have a higher denier
anything below 20 Denier is going to rip no matter the brand
I wear tights a lot and I’m absolutely pissed off at this whole situation as well ha ha
I’ve spent so much money on tights! they all rip and im a careful adult - plus they are SO expensive
The longest lasting ones I had, where the charnos tan tights 20 den - can get them from John Lewis I think £7 for three - I’m doing quite well with these at the moment
for black tights, stick to the very thick type for winter-30-60-80 denier

MissSkegness1951 · 21/09/2024 10:49

If only one leg has holes then cut it off at short shorts length and do the same with another pair that only has holes in one leg and at least you can get some further wear before throwing away!
