Teens and tights (it is bankrupting me!!)

I have two teen girls, seemingly unable to keep a pair of tights longer than a week between them.

They wear black tights to school and also like wearing tan tights with skirts.

Have tried Primark, M&S, nutmeg and now SNAG to no avail.

Is there any tried and tested tights that stand up to heavy-handed teens?!

It would be even better if furniture was properly finished so as not to give splinters to the user.

if you have a couple of pairs with a hole in one leg but not the other, cut the leg off with the hole and wear two pairs one over the other but with a single leg at each side. That’s what my mum made me do when I kept getting holes in my school tights.

It probably was properly finished when it was new. And the makers didn't anticipate miniskirts.

By the time I was there, it had undergone 10-15 years of battering.

Are they wearing tights or pantyhose?

I wear black opaque control top tights and I have pairs that are years old, you'd have to get seriously aggressive to rip them. And they don't sag down at all.

If they're getting holes weekly in opaque tights they're doing it on purpose, no matter what they tell you.

Have they tried dance tights. They are pretty durable. Bloch or Capezio

Teach them how to sew up the holes neatly, if they're mid thigh it won't show. That's what I learned to do about 45 years ago when I was young without much money.

I remember this! Going through many, many pairs of thin tights. It wasn't a fashion then, it was the school chairs which had broken corners, nails in the seats holding them together. Sometimes desks if you sat with crossed legs.

Nail varnish. Teach them to sew. Thicker tights/longer skirts (like that would work when we all rolled our skirts up anyway 🤣) and if we got in trouble, we'd ask why the teachers were looking at our legs

I would make it their problem. It really comes down to being a lot more careful about not getting holes in them while putting them on and not catching them on the underside of desks (I have this problem at work, it’s not just a school thing). They always have the option of nail varnish or mending them.
I would get them a cheap pair of black trousers as an alternative if the school allows it. But I wouldn’t keep replacing tights indefinitely, not wrecking them every time you wear them is a useful learning exercise.

My 15 yo just wears them with holes in them. I tried to get her to dump and replace but she said it was a waste of money…

I think a budget is a good idea. Can they wear socks instead of tights if they run out of money?

My daughter managed to get to year 9 with no holes (or no regular holes) in her tights.....every pair this year has had a massive rip in the thigh!
It's a thing, I'm not buying any more pairs, bare legs or trousers for her!

Are they like the girls I teach?
They all wear those tube skirts, very short. Paired with black tights, not opaque, usually a low denier, perhaps 10-20, so it does seem a recipe for holes and rips, even though desks aren't wooden, things still catch.

I can’t believe they’re having to wear tights in July. That must be murder in the heat.

Invest in one pair of thick woollen tights each. Then give the girls X pairs of their faves and a tights budget. Once they have worn through their tights and budget the only option will be the woollen ones.

It seems to be their choice, no compulsion where I work.

Just tell them to have bare legs in this weather (unless it's compulsory for their uniform) and just wear socks!

M&S 60 den tights last weeks here. Do they cut their toe nails regularly and know how to put nylon tights on (by rolling them)?

Are tight compulsory, even in the summer when it’s not cold?

Not where I work, but they seem to want to wear them. I think it's a current look, very short skirts with low denier tights.

We live in Scotland... Hot temperatures not a concern! They both wear mid -thigh flared skirts with their tights preference (13yr old wears 80 denier, 15yr old 50 denier).

They actually wear skorts when they can, so no need to be hoicking them up.

This is her uniform preference - would long socks work, do you think?
