Teens and tights (it is bankrupting me!!)

I have two teen girls, seemingly unable to keep a pair of tights longer than a week between them.

They wear black tights to school and also like wearing tan tights with skirts.

Have tried Primark, M&S, nutmeg and now SNAG to no avail.

Is there any tried and tested tights that stand up to heavy-handed teens?!

My eldest can destroy 80 denier no problem! She doesn't rip them - it's usually really daft stuff like sitting on a wall with her male friends at breaktimes. This year she's worn trousers a lot more (she fractured her wrist so it's been harder work to get her tights pulled up) - but I'm cynically exploiting sibling rivalry by challenging them to see who can get to half term with the most un-shredded tights.

@YouBelongWithMe I don't have a solution as such, but have found that the footless tights last so much longer. Nice and thick for winter - can get fleeced lined, velvet lined etc, and just tights. I used to find that not only were tights (with feet) an absolute pita to put on, due to legs always twisting no matter how careful you are, but also the same with pulling them up and down in general - ie using the bathroom. I found that most of my tights ended up ripping, with holes, ladders etc, being caused by the actual putting on/pulling them up. Since buying the footless tights, especially the thicker/higher denier, I honestly can't even recall when the last time was that I got/put a hole in them. They're also much more comfy generally. I'd say definitely worth a try.

Thicker tights/higher denier is the only solution for me!

I love snag but they are defo not hard wearing. The best I’ve found are John Lewis. I kept some 40 denier ones going for 2 years, including putting them in the wash and tumbler dryer

My dd however wrecks them. They poke hair grips through in lessons she’s admitted. I just stop replacing them if it keeps happening….

I don't miss the tights days at all. DD just used to buy the cheapest she could find and treat them as pretty much disposable. God knows what she used to do to them.
She had an allowance which they were supposed to come from, occasionally when she had a spendy month she'd wear two holey pairs to make one good pair!

I have been contemplating Better Tights. Maybe i just give them £20 pwr term and tell them that's it. The issue is they don't have alternatives - they don't have black trousers to wear to school if they ruin all the tights.

then they can just wear two pairs? they won't have holes in the same places.
I would just do that. presumably they have pocket money and can buy more if they're really desperate.

are they the really thin tights which is why they are ripping so easily? Is that the look they like rather than thicker completely opaque ones? If so you can buy thick tights that look like the translucent ones, will be good for when it gets really cold too.

If the holes are in the thighs I'd put money on they are sitting at old wooden science or technology tables. My ancient lab tables used to pluck holes in students tights all the time.

Two pairs will be too hot and itchy.

Why don't schools just let girls wear trousers?

Our school does but they'd rather wear skirts. Sigh.

What about cycling shorts over the tights, so that but can't snag?
