Dont bother @IClaudine, Non-event, shouty Sunak - he is an utter yob underneath his expensively acquired veneer - and rather passive Starmer. Very annoying all round. Sunak knows what a woman is, someone to shout at and talk over. We would not get on.

I agree. Sunak is a nasty little bully. Starmer is simply too well mannered to 'yob' back at him. He's measured & thoughtful. I was pleased when he said (paraphrase) 'show some respect to the audience & let me answer the questions'

bombastix · 26/06/2024 22:08

IClaudine · 26/06/2024 22:05

Why do so many posters who are anti-Starmer seem unable to spell his first name? It is very odd.

I would post why I think this is, but it is delete/ban territory!

Just assume not sincere and thus fit to ignore. It’s so basic as rudeness that why bother if someone cannot even get to that level of civil exchange.

let's return to this thread in a year and see how much tax we're all paying, eh? I guarantee it will be more with Kier in charge.

Very happy to pay more taxes if it means we can see a GP, not have to wait a year for hospital treatment, that our hospitals and schools aren't collapsing.

We already pay higher taxes under the Tories.

Some people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

Lalgarh · 26/06/2024 22:11

He's measured & thoughtful.

That's the KC training. Something ex banker Sunak patently never had to cultivate

YY, Why won't Keir or any questioners challenge this notion that high taxes and high welfare are evils??

True but some people in the audience appeared to barrack him for that.

The Conservative calculation was actually we will pay £2000 over 4 years per household.

Even if you accept the Tory sums (bear in mind the IFS did not) that means for a household of 5 like ours for £100 each pa the Labour party will get waiting lists down to zero (that's the plan 2million appts a year for 4 years), set up GB energy to lower energy bills, recruit 6500 new teachers to teach our children how to spell Keir, nationalise the railways, set up a Border Command Force to tackle people smuggling, recruit more police and set up youth services to address antisocial behaviour. All whilst retaining fiscal discipline so borrowing doesn't increase and we don't commit to uncosted spending pledges.

Fucking bargain. I'll take that over unfunded plans to abolish NI, place a triple lock + on pensions and continue to have a raised stamp duty threshold for first time buyers which just generates house price inflation in the SE.

Personally I’m okay with that if I can see a GP or dentist and my road isn’t littered with potholes that are more akin to sink holes. You get what you pay for.

Totally. It works out about £42 per month per household.

Bring it on.

I do wonder what the definition of Prime Ministerial is.

The Tory bots on Twiitter have Jimmy Saville (spelt that way) trending at the moment..

Pathetic.

bombastix · 26/06/2024 22:37

Sunak chasing the Reform vote - all the references to surrender. It will have been done to shore up the Conservative vote that is otherwise thinking that the Conservatives have lost on immigration and Nigel Farage has a point.

Notonthestairs · 26/06/2024 22:58

@sundaysathome

The Office for Budget Responsibility says the Tories plan to increase taxes to 37.1 per cent of GDP by 2028/29. So the 0.6-point increase works out at £20 billion more tax raised in that year than if the tax/GDP ratio (below) had stayed flat.

Add up all four years (as the Tories did for their Labour calculation) and you end up with a £320 rise in year one, £620 in year two, £930 in year three and £1,150 in the final year. So a sum of £3,020 per working household. Except this would be just as misleading as the £2,000 figure that Sunak used so often in the debate last night.

We've written to @Conservatives to ask them to remove the “Tax Check UK" rebrand of @CCHQPress. This misrepresents posts on the account as an impartial fact checking service. Voters deserve better.

He's being voted in as a least worst option. He'll be a short term disastrous tenant in no.10.

Notonthestairs · 26/06/2024 23:13

Short term tennant eh? Can't be as bad as Truss. Or Johnson. Or May. Or Sunak.

sundaysathome · 26/06/2024 23:15

be careful what you wish for. Let's revisit this thread in 6 months and see how the experiment is going....

5 years is not short term! I think Labour will have two terms. Maybe Angela Rayner will be PM for term two. That would raise some hackles 😍

Oh well we'll just stick with the morally bankrupt lot who are grinding the country into the dirt then shall we?

NoDishiForRishi · 26/06/2024 23:18

I would absolutely love that!

Notonthestairs · 26/06/2024 23:19

So was 2019 an 'experiment'? 2017? 2015? Or is it only when Labour gains a majority- if they do - that it is an experiment.
Really fail to see how any Conservative voter can moan given the terrible shower they've voted in over the last 14 years.
