When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

I didn't go to school with this person, but used to work with her aunt on her father's side. At the time, celeb was well known for being estranged from her father (not sure about now - this was ages ago) and had talked about it in an interview she did with one of the tabloids. Someone brought a copy into the office and showed it to the aunt, who sat there reading it and kept saying things like "That wasn't true! I can't see how that can have happened! Obviously no one's told her why her parents REALLY separated!"

I have no idea what's true and what's not, but I certainly know all the other side of that family's feuds (including one thing that I won't elaborate on because it doesn't seem to have made it to the press, which I'm a bit surprised about tbh but don't think it's in anyone's interest for it to be public).

And to be fair, I don't know how much of it, if any, is the celeb lying, and how much is just her repeating stuff she's been told about when she was very young, which may not be quite what happened but she was too young at the time to be really able to contradict it.

I know of a 'celeb' who although he is soon to be a Z lister, claimed that his well off parents, despite being wealthy to send him to one of Britain's most expensive public schools, couldn't afford Sky TV when he was growing up. Despite Sky Tv only just starting off then.
Luckily he now goes around filling up other people's cars, so he did good in the end despite the hardship of his upbringing.

A childhood family friend of mine was a minor celebrity who is 41 now but says she was born in 2000. 🧐

How are they even getting away with that?!

I was at school with someone who is now part of the far-right world. Part of their schtick is that they "dropped out of school" at 16. Not according to the upper-sixth yearbook I've got here, sunshine.

Aren't you tempted to share some of this stuff with the press?
I can't bear liars - particularly when it's a political grift

Probably a common one but I went to school with someone who is married to a well-known sporting star so she appears in magazine spreads etc with him. She was in my class at school but is now several years younger than me!

Not me, but my friend I met when I moved to Australia.
She had a best friend through kindergarten and primary school. This friend was 3 days older than her and they had joint birthday parties every single year from age 5-11. They then went to different secondary schools and eventually lost contact.

My friend’s ex best friend is now 6 years younger than her 😜 Not sure why she lies about her age because she looks utterly phenomenal.

I knew Nicola from girls aload. She claims she's from Liverpool, she's from Runcorn.

No idea where she got the scouse accent from, it's certainly not a Runcorn accent. Although we do have plenty of plastic scousers from the over spill.

Same with Sporty spice, she's from Widnes not Liverpool.

Also while I'm at it, Katona is an awful person. She was just as bad as George, but made out he was worse than her. She's dipped in and out of a seedy underworld numerous times and she is vile.

Probably outed myself. Don't care.

Do you mean six years older?

Olivegardenishome · 25/06/2024 01:36

No. Margot is now “6 years younger” than my friend, despite actually being 3 days older. She was born in 1984, but online claims to have been born in 1990…

Used to feel bad for a lad I knew in our mid-teens. His elder brother was an fantasist who was convinced that he'd be a big rock star one day.
He lives not far from where he grew up, still goes to the football and the local pubs.
His current band has sold 40 million records while he's been with them, so the careers teacher and the rest of us have been proved wrong.

Oh you need to tell us who this is!!!

Oh go on, give us a bigger clue?

I did not go to school with this person. But met him. Very early days knew that he was a baddun. Despised him from the moment I met him, in his glory days.

Nasty, nasty nasty horrible man.I was a very young teenager. I could feel the horribleness seeping out of him. Creepy and handsy. He was horrible.

Don't know how 'anybody' could fall under his spell. Repellent. Horrid man.

I don't doubt that it can be easily guessed.

settingss · 25/06/2024 02:02

Is your version of events verifiably true though? Or is it your words vs theirs, with a difference of opinion? You don’t know every social interaction they had for example, maybe what you see as scouting wasn’t how they got started or didn’t work out for them. Perhaps you feel they had industry contacts but perhaps they didn’t feel they had a network that they could tap into.

I don’t really get why you’re invested in this.

ultimately celebrities have a personal brand and a story - I couldn’t lose sleep over this. I’ve seen people tell worse lies for the sake for their 200 instagram followers!

So why bother posting? Absolutely pointless. The thread isn't titled "Guess the Celeb"

For the same reason lots of others havent named "their" celeb. Had a bad day?

Russell Brand

Even if it isnt him, he is all of that.

WhatsUpNowThen · 25/06/2024 02:05

Russell Brand

No. Worse than that.

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/06/2024 02:07

I dont get the thing about claiming to be younger than you are, surely its better to claim to be older?! I think it was Joan Rivers (usually is!) who said that its better to have people say "OMG you dont look X years old" than have them give a look and go "hmmm....really?! Who are you trying to fool?"

There is worse than that?! You got me stumped.

ETA unless it is HIM. Shame he died before his victims got justice.

WhatsUpNowThen · 25/06/2024 02:09

I'm an older woman. We had nasties in our day too.

JS might be a clue.

Jimmy?!

Correct. It seemed so obvious to me.
Others, not so much.

Not sure if we're now talking about the same person. But yes. It's something I spend a little time thinking about..

Didn't know that was a bad thing to do. OK. Warning taken. I won't

WhatsUpNowThen · 25/06/2024 02:26

Although, why can we talk about RB but not JS?

user1492757084 · 25/06/2024 02:29

I guess everyone is entitled to speak their own truth.
If one identifies as being born in 1990 then who can argue?

People fudge things for their own advantage and their own career success - that's perfectly fine for actors and people in the pretend industries, I think.

Not so okay if for people trying to dupe teenagers into romance, or commit fraud or crimes.
