When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

This thread has reminded me of when Hilary Baldwin pretended to be Spanish and couldn't remember the English word for a cucumber 😂

Why has this not been a bigger deal? No Hilary you were born in Boston!

PyongyangKipperbang · 25/06/2024 02:31

I was referring to JS, even typing its initials makes me shudder

It is a little funny that Anya Robbie, Margot's "big" sister looks younger than Margot .. though both lovely looking.

I apparently said something a bit wrong.

Bet it's Jason Statham

😂😂

Bet it's Jason Statham

Got it in one. He hates kids, especially when they slap an omelette in his face.

So intolerant.

MorvernBlack · 25/06/2024 03:26

I'd say lying about your age is par for the course and justifiable in an industry where ageism is absolutely rife.

I went to school with a successful artist and a TV personality. The TV personality was a bit of a character and still is, although not unpleasant, the artist has always been lovely.

A well known sportsman went to DS's school, the school likes to brag about it, probably the only famous ex pupil. There were a few red cheeks when the sportsman said on national TV that he'd been badly bullied and the school had been unsupportive in this and his sport. Asfaik it's true, the school still has a bullying problem.

I couldn’t care less about any “comeback” from a Z-lister. However, if I say I went to school with Arabella Muffinface from Made in Chelsea or wherever and she was a bitch, all anyone who takes a dislike to me on MN has to do is Google her name and the word “school” and they’ll have a pretty good idea of where I went to school. Advance search my posts and you might find some other identifying information.

If you think that sounds paranoid, let me tell you, I’ve had more than one person trying to piece together information from my posts. I’d rather leave you hanging about details of celebs of years gone by than have that again, thank you.

This is v funny because I’ve come on this thread to say - in all seriousness - that my DC was at school with a girl who was on Made In Chelsea, and this girl said she was bullied and disliked at school when in fact she was Miss Cool & Popular and a bit of a bully herself.

I dont get the thing about claiming to be younger than you are, surely its better to claim to be older?! I think it was Joan Rivers (usually is!) who said that its better to have people say "OMG you dont look X years old" than have them give a look and go "hmmm....really?! Who are you trying to fool?"

I'm chronic for lying about my age but thank you Joan, that has given me food for thought 😎

garlictwist · 25/06/2024 03:35

I went to school with a famous mummy blogger. She always goes on about how she had no voice and was bullied at school. In fact she was very gobby and overbearing and made my friend's life an absolute misery through her meanness.

vendi · 25/06/2024 03:40

Went to school with a few famous people.
One of them rewrote history in the tabloids as soon as they became famous.
A part of me wants to out them, though I am still close friends with their family member.

Fraaahnces · 25/06/2024 05:13

I’m still mates with a couple of women I went to high school with. One of our school bullies likes to think of herself as a celeb (she’s really not.) She has a small business and my mate brought a copy of a newspaper interview (advertisement) about this woman’s company to a coffee date with her. Not only has this woman clearly had a really bad lip job and a crapload of Botox done, but she calls herself an “Alpha Woman”. 🤮 She’s now eleven years younger than we are it seems. Oddly enough, none of the chemical warfare on her face is convincing anyone. She doesn’t look very happy. (Meanwhile, coffee washed down with Schadenfreude is even better than cake!)

autienotnaughty · 25/06/2024 05:17

Please just name change and out the celeb!!!

Not me, but my friend I met when I moved to Australia.
She had a best friend through kindergarten and primary school. This friend was 3 days older than her and they had joint birthday parties every single year from age 5-11. They then went to different secondary schools and eventually lost contact.

My friend’s ex best friend is now 6 years younger than her 😜 Not sure why she lies about her age because she looks utterly phenomenal.

(Margot Robbie)

I will tell you why because it increases her possibilities for interesting work projects.Simple as that.
LA, Hollywood it's brutal for women as they age, they need to stay thin and young and pretty so the age one everyone changes if they have any sense. I don't get the incredulity of everyone on this thread- people change their age to increase their survival prospects in a harsh industry just as a teacher takes training courses in stuff or an accountant does the next exam set, an actor shaves off their age because the casting call is coming and it's better to be younger than older. Younger equals more work options and you would all do the same if you were in the business.

Haha, thanks for that, but I’m fully aware of the why… but this thread is about celebs who lie, not about the why. And just like many of the other people who’ve commented on this thread about people they went to school with who’ve lied about their age, I contributed. Yet you only pick this one out?

And no, I think a teacher doing professional development is not comparable to a celebrity lying about their age. What a very strange analogy.

A good friend of mine went to school with someone who used to be in a soap years ago. Anyway my friend said she was an absolute cow at school. Her nice girl imagine was uncovered thankfully when she tried to twist something against another celeb. Thankfully karma made sure she’s pretty obsolete now.

That Roxanne (I think) that accused the guy of hitting her in an environment where every single interaction is on film?

Oh no it's just that you said in your post "Not sure why she lies about her age because she looks utterly phenomenal". So I was explaining as you said you were not sure why she lies about her age, why she does lie about her age, so you can be put out of your unsureness now.

Basically you thinking she looks phenomenal is utterly irrelevant to Margot Robbie getting work via the casting process, unless you happen to be a Hollywood casting agent with the power to send projects Margot's way and I assumed you are not from your comment.

DevilsKitchen · 25/06/2024 06:23

There is a girl that I know who runs a reasonably successful social media channels themed around the fact she was born and raised in London. I must have imagined her attending my school in leafy east Hertfordshire

Oh my gosh, I meant why lie when you look a certain way? As in why lie about your age when you look like you could be any age. Someone else mentioned the same thing a page back. Wouldn’t you rather be told “you look phenomenal for 39” instead of “oh wow you’re 32”, but thinking you look older.
And when you’re an A lister like her, no casting producer will look at bits of paper and say “reject this one because she’s over 35”, they know who she is and what she looks like…

Am I seriously having this conversation? Bowing out as I’ve wasted enough time on something I care so little about. Take care

middler · 25/06/2024 06:28

...and just to address your second point, since the OP actually asks,

" I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?"

the thread does seem to be just as much about why people lie as to the actual substance of their lies so I can't agree that as you say " this thread is about celebs who lie, not about the why".

This thread has not been about who lies much at all as no one is really naming anyone, it's one big game of Guess Who?

I'm simply sharing with you why so many of them lie, it's about maximizing their chances of getting more work and yes teachers takes courses to stay current and actors change their birth date because ageisim is very much alive still in the film industry. Making a living is a constant struggle for anyone who moves from job to job and actors are in that struggle too, even very successful ones like MR.

It's just a dialogue, I don't think there is any need for talk of bowing out and ' am I seriously having this conversation' on a forum where people interact with what each poster...posts?

You would be amazed how fickle those casting directors are and yes even the A listers need to present as being younger than they are. Once they start un aging themselves, they have to keep it up.

Of course Robbie is now extremely wealthy (and has considerable clout in Hollywood currently) due to her production interests and success of Barbie but she still wants to have the choices that being perceived as younger provide her.

The harsh reality is we live in a very ageist society and it affects many industries but especially the film industry. If you are in an industry where there is no ageism then lucky you but the truth is that I see it even in work realms you would think it does not matter in, as the work force gets younger they hire, and they prefer to hire younger people. So as we all age we all face the challenges of this but not quite so sharply as people in public view as actors/celebs are.
