When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

threeisacharm18 · 24/06/2024 20:38

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

Aren't you tempted to share some of this stuff with the press?
I can't bear liars - particularly when it's a political grift

I have mentioned it to Private Eye, where I have a contact. They said it wasn't really enough on its own, but filed it away for the event that they do something on this individual in future.

She dyes her hair and uses fake tan to pretend to be Hispanic though, when her kids clearly to my eyes look I would guess Irish descent?
@rabbitdig yes I'd forgotten about that! How ridiculous she is!

@CutthroatDruTheViolent It's because Americans, Hillary included apparently, think Spanish people are Hispanic/Latino (they speak Spanish and are often poor immigrants / minimum wage workers in the US, ironically due to history of Spain's colonisation of their country), hence all her sob stories, and lots of people getting outraged at her pretending to be an oppressed ethnic minority

Whereas I would guess most Spanish people in the US are probably expats? And (may be v wrong on this so don't crucify me) even olive-skinned / darker-toned Spanish people, those I know at least, are simply able to tan and take it as a status symbol or aesthetic choice?

Oh, I thought my Hilaria fascination was over, but this reminds me of MLK (Martin Luther King) Day when she posted a video of her placing her fake tanned arm next to her child's lily white arm as a teaching moment for her child about racism against darker skinned people. That was gold, or should I say golden brown

Edited

Omg she did not do that !! 😂😂 I also remember seeing a post during the BLM Instagram thing by our fave Jack M. It was along the lines of her having some Greek or Cypriot (I think) ancestry and therefore she'd always felt 'othered' and 'dirty' or some such nonsense. Absolutely cringe.

Not particularly dramatic although somewhat odd. My ex DH went to a public school with a well known designer with a double barrelled surname. In an interview he said he was badly bullied at school for his double barrelled surname and for being 'posh'. Ex DH was a bit bemused as the designer didn't use the double barrel surname
until after leaving school and everyone at the school was 'posh' (except for DH who got a bursary!) so it was hardly likely he would be bullied for that!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 25/06/2024 17:19

I have a Wiki page. It makes me some years older than I actually am. I did not write it and don't know who did, but when I find them....

So it isn't always the celeb's fault (I am NOT a celeb), sometimes their publicist decides to, umm, massage the figures somewhat. I just can't work out why someone decided to massage mine UPWARDS.

That reminds me of that infamous interview with the British footballer who had just moved to France, and all of a sudden was talking like he was French - with all the intonations and everything... Joey something?!

Joey Barton 😆I'd completely forgotten about that!

Did she go to school with him? My nan always said she was in primary school class with him and his name was something else.

Harry Webb!

My Grandmother was always a year older than she really was and her marriage date was changed otherwise her first child would have been born at 15yo when she was unmarried.

Genealogy is marvellous for outing family secrets, I've found numerous people in my family who were not who they were said to be!

Whothefuckdoesthat · 24/06/2024 23:26

I used to work with someone who came from an acting family. We’re not talking dynasties here, but if I said so and so, who played this role in that series or film, you’d probably know who they were. All different surnames so you wouldn’t realise they were connected unless you combed their Wikipedia pages.

Anyway, he was very indiscreet and told me things about a-list celebs and household names that made my jaw drop. I don’t have the money for legal bills so absolutely won’t be repeating any of them, but if half of what he’s said can be believed, the majority of British actors and entertainers appearing on our screens are lying, backstabbing sociopaths who would set fire to their grandmothers if it got them the job they wanted. I’m sure it’s not just Brits, but they were the people he knew.

Can you share the stories and just not name the celebs?

JudgeJ · 25/06/2024 17:29

Mrsjayy · 25/06/2024 10:31

His name is Harry Webb he must be 81ish by now I'm sure my Auntie said he was her age and she is 82 and she was a huge fan when she was younger.

October 1940, nothing wrong with my memory 65+ years on, the 14 October I think!

Doubledenim305 · 25/06/2024 17:42

I was at school with a Tory politician who claims he was horrendously bullied at school for being gay. I was in his year and nobody knew he was gay. Was surprised he said that .

Judecb · 25/06/2024 17:48

Any hints as to who this is??!

Picoloangel · 25/06/2024 17:51

Surely you all mean HilarIA Baldwin? Not plain old Hilary! She’s a bona fide Spainiard surely? ‘ow you say queue-cum-bare?!

QueenOfHiraeth · 24/06/2024 20:59

I went to school with a champion ballroom dancer who began as 1 year younger than me at school and was about 5 years younger by the time she retired from dancing!

I used to know an actress like that, albeit I was never at school with her. Either the person who wrote her Wikipedia page has underestimated her age by at least a decade, or she finished drama school and got married before she was 13.

Bogeyes · 25/06/2024 17:58

I went to school in UK. A guy in my class became fairly famous. He tells everyone he was born and raised in Jamaica!

Lovecat · 25/06/2024 18:07

DH was at primary school in the same class as Liz Hurley. Annoyingly, she's never lied about her age, so I have no goss. He can't even remember her, it was only when he went to a school reunion and there was speculation about her turning up that he found out. Too busy playing football... 😂

The Margot Robbie age lie rumours were debunked - it was everywhere a few years ago. She also appeared in press when she was acting in school which also helped to confirm her age https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/we-can-prove-margot-robbie-isnt-lying-about-her-age_n_573617dfe4b060aa781a3de5

That article doesn't prove that she was born in 1990.

WillimNot · 25/06/2024 18:29

I went to school with a Tory MP

Her story is she was dreadfully bullied, has a very difficult time and worked hard at school

Lying cow!

She was an utter bitch at school, mean, bike bully who got off on being abusive to us nerds. She was spoiled by her parents and didn't she love to let everyone know about it.

I nearly choked on my coffee when I heard her sob story on the TV

Grandmasswagbag · 24/06/2024 22:14

This thread has reminded me of when Hilary Baldwin pretended to be Spanish and couldn't remember the English word for a cucumber 😂

The whole Hilary Baldwin story is completely bizarre. Even after her entire background was revealed, she still speaks in a fake accent.

Lifeomars · 25/06/2024 12:51

Doesn't that Lizzie Cundy person do this too? She fascinates me in a horrified way, the surgery, the bizarre outfits that would be OTT on a woman half her age, the way she has created a limited media presence solely based on the fact that she was once married to a footballer in the dim and distant past.

We once stayed at a holiday cottage that she owned - just booked the normal way through a standard online cottage letting site.

We neither knew that she owned it, or indeed who she was. We had some issues and tried to get in touch with the owner, but were put through to the cleaner who told us that she (Lizzie) was a celebrity and far too busy to manage her own cottage - so we looked online for her name to see whoever on earth she was.

It was a very nice cottage, but there were a few glaring omissions and important things that had been misrepresented/not mentioned in the listing.

Celebs shouldn't lie as they will always get caught out. Megan Markle claims to be 42 and says she was born on Aug 4th, 1981. But people who were in same class as her at school with her claim that she was born in 1977, making her 46. This is backed up by Megan, herself, who said that she was 2 and her sister Samantha 15 when they were separated but Samantha was born in November 1964. So she will be 60 this year, so Megan must be 46 (47 in August). (A few years older than Harry, I wonder if he knows?)

Whereas older male actors can just keep cranking out crappy performances opposite women forty years younger than them?

I'm far from convinced that Dick Van Dyke has made his last film yet - even at 98!
