When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

I once worked at a company with someone who went on to be an MP. He has conveniently forgotten his first wife.

MPs are champion air brushers.

Roles are there for older women but they have to be good. Meryl streep, Maggie Smith, Glenda Jackson, Joan Collins, Jane Fonda, lilly Tomlin.

Netflix, Disney, prime Etc are streets ahead at recognising that the boomers are a less fickle market than the 20-49 demographic many USA channels are chasing. I look at Mark Harmon, David McCallum in ncis, they carried that show forward as the young ones quite rightly moved on.

Grace and Frankie, murders in the building, both series stars of pensionable age with young stars blending in perfectly.

Although it's undeniably funny, I do find it fascinating. It's the sort of thing you might do when you're 10. Make up a little story to make yourself sound more interesting among your friends. But for an adult to think it's acceptable to A. Lie so blatantly, and B. Think they could get away with it when they're known world wide is completely bizarre! Imagine the effort of putting that accent on all the time. I would say it's a deep seated personality disorder really.

it's hilarious, WTAF was her family or her husband thinking when she was doing this?? I have family from different parts of Europe & my accent/language changes for a bit (briefly) if I'm speaking with them but this is bonkers! And then did she just stop one day?? I can feel a trip down a rabbit hole coming on...

Omg yes. I went to school with a celeb who’s trying to come across as a fun ‘every man’ and serious actor after hitting the big time recently. But he’s awful - a racist, sexist, transphobic, piece of trash, his parents were so rich and influential they literally bought him roles on the west-end (not just as a child but more recently too) and even ghost invested in several of his biggest projects.

I went to school with someone who is now a "media personality". I've seen a few articles she has written and a couple of TV interviews. Her memory of how she was at school and mine differ wildly.
Also she's put a lot of spin on some things to do with her past to paint them in a more positive light.
She was a really unpleasant person at school and now she trades on her kind, caring image.
To be fair though, perhaps she has changed and is genuinely kinder to others than she was at school and people can have false memories too, or at least have developed a narrative about their school days which has changed little by little over the years, leading the person to believe that this narrative is what actually happened.

I went down that rabbit hole years ago!

I was SO fascinated by her psychology. The pretense actually extended/extends beyond 1 or 2 tales told to the press. She's named her kids Spanish names, frequently talks/posts about her Spanish childhood (born and raised in Boston her whole life, 2 professional very American parents in high-flying corporate & academia), speaks in a Spanish accent 24/7 and pretends not to know simple English words frequently.

Or at least did before she was uncovered (though she doubled down for the LONGEST time, even after articles mocking her came out eg front page of NY Post with her in a matador costume). Not sure if she still lays it on that thick

She attended NYU, so she claims to have newly arrived in the US, wide-eyed and starry-eyed from Spain at 18. Seems to have modelled herself after Salma Hayek who purportedly rejected Alec Baldwin. IIRC she (Hilllary) also did the Meghan Markle thing of pretending she didn't know who Alec Baldwin was when they met, as apparently her family didn't have a TV in Spain.

Americans also don't really know where Spain is / who Spaniards are (to them Spanish = Hispanic/Mexican, whereas actually a great deal of Spaniards look pretty white, and Spain being a first world country, most Spaniards are economically stable). So most of her shtick was talking about being a dark-skinned poor immigrant, and most of the American public also got their knickers in a twist that she's appropriating "poorer minorities".

Sorry for the wall of text! I'm not that interested now, but when I was fascinated, it was sad because the only other people deeply interested are batshit insane. They're still on the Hilaria Baldwin subreddit and they do things like deface her children, photoshop her into sexual positions etc (though tbf sometimes she asks for it, like forcing minimum wage workers in her house to pose as props in her sexy gymnast poses, or twisting herself into sex poses while sitting in pots/pans – yeah I don't understand either).

But they go way beyond logic and reason. I think their deep seated hatred of her is prob just schadenfreude at watching a privileged WASP's downfall. Many seemed not to have jobs either from the way they would literally post every few mins/hours from morning till night?!?! Anyway, sad, I really wanted to know why she did it, and there are actually some fascinating clues!

CyanideShake · 25/06/2024 14:32

Hilary Baldwin and her Spanish cos-play reminds me of lockdown. I remember dedicating a good two days to researching the bonkerness of it all.

And I quote 'ow you say...coocumber?' whenever I see one.

Scorchio84 · 25/06/2024 14:33

@rabbitdig this is even more mental than I realised! I can't wait for deep dive when I get home 😆

rabbitdig · 25/06/2024 14:35

@Grandmasswagbag I'm too lazy to scroll back and quote your prev post but there are actually (fairly low effort, not very outraged) Youtube comments dating back to years before she was exposed, saying she's not from Spain and went to school with them. Nobody paid attention to those comments then.

She went to privileged / competitive private prep schools though, so her previous classmates were prob too busy having professional careers (some in her year are public faces) and building wealth to care. I imagine if she went to public schools (US state school), more people would have pointed it out

nearlyemptynes · 25/06/2024 14:36

I was at school (all be it briefly) with a certain celebrity writer who claims she was bullied at school - she started at the school taking up a grammar school place I may add and said from the beginning she was leaving to be home educated. She was not very nice at all.

nearlyemptynes · 25/06/2024 14:37

A famous recently appointed presenter of a morning programme always either lies about where she is from, claiming she is from a neighbouring more upmarket town, or if she tells the truth she makes out she was really deprived which she most certainly was not!

Keir Starmers dad was a toolmaker. Dont know if anyone knows that as he never mentions it.

Actually, he spoke about it in a recent interview.

@Grandmasswagbag That one really made me laugh, it was such a dumb ruse. She was brought up in Massachusetts and went to uni in New York. How could she think she’d get away with it?! 🤣

The thing is, she does seem to have got away with it! She's still doubling down on the accent and giving her 50th kid a Spanish name, despite them all coming out blonde and blue eyed! I don't know why either of the Baldwins still exist in the public eye, especially after Alec's crimimal charges.

Whereas older male actors can just keep cranking out crappy performances opposite women forty years younger than them?

Re the Hilaria Baldwin thing, I know a woman who did something similar. Her name is unusual and common in another European country say Alexandra or similar. One night when out a guy said so you are from x country then and she said yes, just taking the piss. She put on a fake exaggerated accent and he believed her. She was messing with her friends, all laughing about it. Turns out she started dating the guy after and kept up the game. She created an entire backstory of absolute BS including unnecessary lies about where she lived now and her job. She was introduced to his friends and went on holidays with him. Eventually she got caught, a colleague of her boyfriend knew a friend of friend, or some vague crossover. It went on for months and by all accounts the man was devastated. No explanation was given.

Oh, I thought my Hilaria fascination was over, but this reminds me of MLK (Martin Luther King) Day when she posted a video of her placing her fake tanned arm next to her child's lily white arm as a teaching moment for her child about racism against darker skinned people. That was gold, or should I say golden brown

She dyes her hair and uses fake tan to pretend to be Hispanic though, when her kids clearly to my eyes look I would guess Irish descent?
@rabbitdig yes I'd forgotten about that! How ridiculous she is!
