When you went to school with a celebrity and they lie about their story

I was listening to a pop star who was being interviewed and heard them tell some blatant lies about their background.

They claimed to never have gone to drama school or had any industry connections and miraculously was scouted.

I know this to be a complete lie. I was so surprised as to why they would lie this way. It makes no sense. It's been 20 years. No one cares that much so why lie... ?

I guess they were trying to flog something so maybe it the 'struggle story' sells better

Cliff may not be technically lying about his age, but it must sound weirder and weirder as the years go by with him singing at his concerts "We're the young ones... and we may not be the young ones very long" Grin

To be fair, they're quite likely not intending to deceive, but are just geographically 'rounding up' to the nearest big place that people - especially their international audience - will have heard of.

Which American will have heard of Widnes; and which German has a clue where Runcorn is? Liverpool, on the other hand, is well-known across the world.

I have had this. People in the south east will expect you have heard of their town of 12,000 but find it daft to consider they might know yor town of 120,000.
Saying "Near Liverpool" just becomes Liverpool in their ears.

I have a friend who shared the same date and year of birth as Catherine Zeta-Jones. The friend aged by a year every birthday. CZJ stopped once she became mega famous and stuck at 41 for a surprisingly long time.

I have exactly the same dob as Steve Davis the snooker player.
He's never changed his dob 😂

That reminds me of that infamous interview with the British footballer who had just moved to France, and all of a sudden was talking like he was French - with all the intonations and everything... Joey something?!

Joey Barton…grade A bellend. Steve McLarens Dutch accent was hilarious too:

Steve McClaren - dutch accent

heh heh... clean sheet, I call it

Sweden99 · 25/06/2024 11:26

To defend Barton, his accents are the least offensives things about him.

Yes! Not even an actual town, but some Londoners will give their borough or even just their road, and assume everybody knows exactly where it is.

The same people will usually describe somebody else as being "From Glasgow....... in Scotland" !

That shocks me - Steve was always renowned for his wild joie de vivre and out-of-control impetuous spirit Grin

There is a famous, and universally well-liked model, who married a pop star. Her older sister was a school friend of a university friend.
Famous model has never lied about her age, and is aging very gracefully indeed.

She is the antidote to all those celebrities who are “economical” with the truth!

Isometimeswonder · 25/06/2024 11:40

Unless you say who these "celebrities" are then this is just tedious!

@StormingNorman Olivia Coleman

There are plenty of posh people who still worked as cleaners/waitresses etc while they were trying to get acting work, though. Being sent to boarding school doesn't necessarily mean your parents agree to support you financially once you leave.

I used to work in PR on TV and theatre projects and I know all sorts of massive fibs that famous people tell. But it's honestly totally plausible that someone like Olivia Colman did cleaning work, either as a summer job in her teens or when she was trying to make it as an actress. I've met some very middle class / posh actors who were definitely doing stuff like cleaning and waitressing when they got their first proper break. I once had to call a young, then unknown (very posh) actor to set up a meeting to discuss some PR stuff when he'd just been cast in something, and it transpired that he was still working in Costa, right up until he started filming. I literally went to the branch and had a meeting with him there when he'd finished his shift!

I think most people drawn to the celeb life – especially if privileged because that means they're not really doing it for money, moreso fame – tend to be a bit more emotionally unstable or volatile, so I guess it sort of makes sense some of them see their own stories as sob stories even when reality is a bit different

From personal experience as someone more privileged who flitted around minimum wage jobs to (successfully eventually!) support my dream when younger, it's still different doing it as a choice (putting off a "stable" career because acting is my chosen vocation) and with a safety net (you know you'd never go totally homeless)

Yasmin le Bon? I've bumped into her once or twice and she is a lovely person, stunningly beautiful and very nice as well.

Spoiler alert: If people haven’t started naming names en masse by page 12, they probably never will. Look for a thread you find less tedious.

AleynEivlys · 25/06/2024 12:25

I did. She claims she was the only mixed race person in our 'rural' school in the 'middle of nowhere' (large illustrious private school in the centre of a very busy and well-known Cotswold town).

She also claims she was bullied and ostracised for the colour of her skin. In reality, she was one of the queen bees, lead in every drama production, won every talent contest etc.

There were people of all colours and races at the school as well, of course. Many were from overseas on exchange!

It irritates me!

AleynEivlys · 25/06/2024 12:26

Oh, just seen someone wants names.

It was 'FKA Twigs'.

25thCenturyQuaker · 25/06/2024 12:33

I went to school with a musician who became very famous - even notorious - in the 80s, and is still recording and performing today. I wouldn't say he's ever lied about his time at school, but he certainly wrote it out of his own personal history for many years.

It was really only when Facebook became a "thing" and photos began to emerge of him on school trips and the like, that he began to acknowledge this part of his past. In fairness, it wasn't a great school and I personally have very few happy memories of it, so I can kind of understand his reticence.

To be fair, though, you don't know the dynamics between her and other people. Unless you are mixed race yourself (which I'm not saying you're not! but still) it can be hard to understand the complexity of these interactions. Racial othering isn't always just about being called the N word or something as crude as that. That said, obviously if she said she was the only mixed race person and she was not, that is an outright lie.

I once worked at a company with someone who went on to be an MP. He has conveniently forgotten his first wife.

Yes I have one of these too! She’s about to turn 40 but according to her wiki page she’s only 35 🤔

Abby Clancy ?

A lot of celebrities lie about their age. Kelly Brook is probably about 50 but claims to be in her early 40s. Lady Victoria Hervey looks to be in her late 50s but claims to be mid 40s.

Edited

Doesn't that Lizzie Cundy person do this too? She fascinates me in a horrified way, the surgery, the bizarre outfits that would be OTT on a woman half her age, the way she has created a limited media presence solely based on the fact that she was once married to a footballer in the dim and distant past.

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 25/06/2024 12:56

There is 1 very famous (A list Hollywood) man from my town who is exactly who he claims to be. There was a big buzz around a few years ago when he won awards and people were sharing stories a lot. He is middle class and private school educated and doesnt apologise for it either. The fact that he has remained truthful gives him such respect, everyone is ridiculously proud of him here, not just those of his class. I can't fathom lying about myself knowing everyone back home is laughing at me.

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 25/06/2024 13:12

Not a famous person as in well known but more of an influencer / glamour model, used to hang round with her years ago, she was about 4 or 5 years older than me.

Looked at her profile a few years ago and was surprised to see that she was suddenly 10 years younger than me.
