How long has your root canal tooth lasted? Which tooth is it and does it have a crown on it? looking for reassurance as am currently in the process of awaiting a root canal and am only 29

About 20 years and then the tooth broke two weeks ago.

Gold crown bottom molar lasting fine about 8 years in. My dentist talked me out of the white one as he said they don't last as long even when I was going to pay the difference so I trusted him and its been rock solid.

Mine is right at the back , upper. I wish I hadn't bothered tbh, it was very expensive and you can't see it. It broke after a year and was just outside the year guarantee. The dentist smoothed it down but won't have it replaced when it finally goes.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 16/10/2025 12:02

One of my central incisors. First time round on the NHS, a few years. Redone privately, took considerably more time as roots space was apparently really convoluted and unusual. So far 20 years and counting.

Two lower molars in 1977, when I was in my early twenties, so 48 years ago. Both had gold crowns, one still in situ, one replaced about ten years ago. Both still sound (hope I haven’t jinxed them by saying that).

No, but it would have done if I hadn’t been able to get a dentist appointment the very next day.
Dentist said it was already infected.
I had to have the tooth removed.

I have faulty enamel which means I've had more root canals than most people. They tend to last around 15-20 years. Then they crack and bits fall off. As a result I have a mouth after broken teeth.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 16/10/2025 20:27

I had a back molar root canal done when I was 34 and am now 56, I think…

Initally I didn’t have a crown, and it always felt not quite secure. I avoided chewing on it.

When I moved to the US a couple of years later the dentist was astonished I hadn’t had a crown. So I saw another and he was also astonished. So I saw a third who was also astonished, so I got a porcelain crown put on. It has felt great ever since :-)

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 16/10/2025 21:32

DH had his done (cricket ball to the mouth)when he was 14. He's 68 now. I've got several over 30 years old

mamaison · 16/10/2025 21:37

Mine has been there for over 20 years. I did have to have later endodontist work and the crown replaced after that.

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 06:45

@TeaRoseTallulah If it broke is it not infected

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 06:46

@CharlotteCChapel if they crack don't they get infected

Hs2Issue · 17/10/2025 07:12

I have a crown and had root canal on a front tooth. I fell at 7 and broke the tooth then had a crown on it. It got an infection aged 20 so had root canal and crown then has lasted to this day now early 50s. However I need another one as fell recently and smacked the other tooth had root canal last week and some root has been left so need it redoing or it will fail. Really depends on skill of dentist and how bad the roots are!

RandomMess · 17/10/2025 07:16

Tooth next to front tooth x 2 root canal at 12/14 crowned at 23 one replaced at 40 the other at 51. Have had an infection in one but so far both hanging on.

Zempy · 17/10/2025 07:18

Had mine done 35 years ago when I was 25. I was told it would last fifteen years. Still going strong.

Crown. Don’t know which tooth. Bottom left in the middle.

AsideFromThis · 17/10/2025 07:19

I have one crown which has no root canal, and another root canal with no crown. Both are 10years + and no symptoms

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 09:02

@RandomMess what did they do with the infection

Gowlett · 17/10/2025 09:07

Lower molar, got it done mid 20s, with a crown.
Lasted about 20 years. Got an implant after that.

RandomMess · 17/10/2025 10:07

@DeedooI had antibiotics. If it reoccurs and that isn’t enough then rather than have it all removed and bridge/implant they can cut the gum, drain and pack. Which as I have a beautiful crown that looks natural would be my preferred option.

BobbyBiscuits · 17/10/2025 10:11

I think I was about 30 when I had mine done. So 15 ish years ago. It has a crown on it. It's a bit of a problem tooth and does give mild pain occasionally but dentist says it's still going strong.

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 10:15

@RandomMess so it showed up as decay

Deedoo · 17/10/2025 10:16

@BobbyBiscuits as in infected or pain

summerday25 · 17/10/2025 10:32

Two years 🤦‍♀️

TappyGilmore · 17/10/2025 10:41

I have had a couple done but the oldest is 10 or 11 years old. It has a crown, all of mine have had crowns. I thought you had to get crowns.
