I had a gold crown put on to a back molar. Must be around 20 years ago-ish.

catherinewales · 22/06/2024 15:57

Mines my lower left 6 and it's crowned and it's been 8 years. I was told it probably won't last long but it's still there going strong. I want to change it to a white one but won't till it comes out.

I have had several root canals done in the 1970s-1990s - I have never needed the root canal replaced but have needed crowns replaced once or twice.

I had a root canal and implant done following an accident to a front tooth in 1978. The crown has been replaced once in 1995 - then it became loose in 2008 and a dentist in Finland stuck it back on and hoped it would be OK until I got home but it hasn't moved since.

I had root canal and veneer done on an upper molar done because of an abscess done in 1982 and it's still fine as well

Dreamlight · 22/06/2024 18:31

I had a root canal done on my front tooth when I was 15/16, it's still ok at the moment and I am 55

I had one done on a molar and crowned when I was in my early 20's, that root canal is still good but I had the crown taken off yesterday as it had cracked and was causing me issues.

I have had 3 further molars with root canals done over the last 2 years (thanks menopause)! I have had them filled rather than fitted with a crown and an seeing how they go.

I've also had to have 4 teeth taken out, for extensive fillings from when I was a kid going bad!

Please can I ask what type of crown you had on the molar?

I didn't have root canal for either of my crowns and one has lasted 11 years and the other 8.

My DS had root canal work and a crown and it's 10 years old. He said the root canal didn't really hurt. He was told that the average life expectancy is 8.

You are still young. I told my DS that even if it only lasts 8 years you are still 8 years further down the line.

How old is your son if you don’t mind me asking? X

It was a ceramic one I think that screwed in, but it was 30 years ago when I had it done! It was on the NHS at the time.

Had second from the back, upper left molar done. Had a crown put on. Had it for 8 years but had chronic sinus congestion & discomfort in left sinus only all that time. Finally had it pulled last year and the sinus immediately cleared up. Seems it had sadly caused a very small hole into my sinus called sinus communication. Not bothering with implant as at the back and too worried about damaging the sinus again.

AnotherNC22 · 22/06/2024 19:40

Mine was second from the back and was done in overseas, as i happened to be living there at the time. It lasted 8years when it got reinfected. Turned out there was a very deep 5th root (?) that hadnt been caught. Had it redone but started having problems again a year later. Saw a specialist on Harley Street who told me he could see I'd had more treatment on that tooth than the rest of my teeth put together and recommended it was removed entirely. So i did and have had no problems since.

NotTooOldPaul · 22/06/2024 19:45

Upper right 6 done about 40 years ago. It is still in place with no crown and no problems.

Onabench · 22/06/2024 19:47

About 6 years? I then had recurring abscesses for a couple of years so there were obviously some underlying issues. They weren't massively painful just persistent and would resolve themselves after several weeks until the next time. Got the tooth out 9 years after the root canal.

Sturnidae · 22/06/2024 19:55

Mine was done about ten years ago in my mid twenties. It's still going but I'm paranoid about it now as I don't have a dentist 😬

@GentleSloth - of course I don't mind. He's 30 now. It was the only way to save his tooth.

Howlsatthemuna · 22/06/2024 20:35

Upper front tooth - had one root canal done in my teens and had it redone about five years ago, no crown. I’m 33 and it’s fine. I am planning on having it replaced with an implant for longevity/jaw health in future (now I have financial means to do so) but it’s not essential!

GentleSloth · 23/06/2024 21:32

Thank you everyone - a lot of these posts are reassuring

@peachsnapz if you got infection how can it last

Deedoo · 16/10/2025 07:32

@SkylarkDay how is your sinus now

Wallywobbles · 16/10/2025 07:39

I’ve got a lot and I think I’ve had one redone. I still marvel at how sharp the front one are. 30 + years on.

TheNinjaWife · 16/10/2025 07:57

First molar. Had root canal about 35 years ago. I had a gold crown and then during covid I had it replaced for a white one. I only did this as the dentist had previously picked up from X-ray that the original was not fitting tightly to the surface anymore.
the gold one did fall off after around 10 years but a dentist just stuck it back on.
I can’t remember all the terms but the crown I’m talking about just sits on the surface rather than a cap. And the white one I have now was the most expensive option. And the one that would least damage the tooth.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/10/2025 08:05

16 years. I have recently had it removed and replaced with an implant.

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 16/10/2025 08:14

Lower front tooth. I was 17 and am now 62. I did have to have the crown replaced once (a child accidentally head butted me) but that was more than 25 years ago.

FindingMeno · 16/10/2025 08:20

I'm guessing mine is around 12 years old. 2nd bottom molar. No problems...touch wood.
It has a gold crown which I rather like the look of if I'm honest!
