I'll go first.

You shouldn't have a dog or a baby (or anything else noisy) unless you live in a fully detached property.

That's nature though, 1 animal to kill another. Why is a cat less important than any other animal? Anyway my cat would come in from outside and promptly use her litter tray! She is very civilised!

See above, I only adopt rescues anyway where I suppose the alternative is they are put to sleep.

Do you really think all cats should be put to sleep?

By the same vein, some people’s dogs are very quiet and cause no trouble to anyone else. I have a dog who has never barked in her life. But you think no one should have dogs in a detached property, a blanket rule. So I don’t care how fabulous your cats are, and how amazing you are as an owner, I think it should be a blanket rule too.
No I don’t think they should all be put to sleep. All female cats should be neutered and they should be allowed to die out.

I don’t actually believe this to be fair, although I do think cats are unsociable pets and the one that shits in the middle of my lawn every morning, meaning I have to go out and pick it up before my kids can play on the garden, can get to fuck. Just saying that blanket ‘rules’ are stupid.

@gamerchick I may have to. But I'm trapped until my (terminally ill) geriatric cat dies. I can't move whilst she's still here, it would traumatise her, being suddenly in a new home with all new smells etc.

It's a PITA because currently I'm on track to be financially able to retire at 50 if I decide to. Moving to a more expensive property will delay that and I'm otherwise happy here, location wise, space-wise.

This is why I cannot understand animal people. Cannot go on holiday due to the dog, or cannot move because of a cat, it would traumatise it. This is what some of humanity has evolved to, running round after animals picking their shit up.

@Penfeatherington

They're all dirty beasts that crap all over the place and destroy wildlife.

I think you will find that is humans dear. NOT cats. * *Wink

🙄🙄

Penfeatherington · 20/06/2024 20:48

I'm not talking about your cat. I also don't care where you got your cat from - a cat is a cat as far as I'm concerned, don't care if it's a rescue cat or not - it doesn't make it a less selfish choice. They're all dirty beasts that crap all over the place and destroy wildlife.

Cats don't belong in urban areas where they can shit on other people's property and kill birds. They belong in detached properties with fully enclosed gardens. Anything else is selfish.

Why does a cat have to be in a detached property? They're hardly known for being noisy! Sheldon in the Big Bang Theory (upon whom I model myself) actually talks about how he hopes his neighbour will be "as quiet as a cat, jumping from drape (curtain) to drape".

Then you would LOVE my thread from a while back explaining why I would save my cat's life over that of a stranger's child.

I've had babies in a terraced house and a semi detached! Dunno what that makes me!! ..
( I wasn't noisy , but had noisy neighbours and I feel people being more aware of others would be better , but they don't )

Actually there was quite a bit of interesting debate on there about how to value one life over another, the innate selfishness of humans and philosophical arguments like the trolley problem. It led onto a splinter thread, (after everyone was waxing lyrical about how they would save a random child) about why people don't send money to buy antimalaria nets for children in Africa rather than buying a coffee. The conclusion: people are far more selfish and hypocritical than they admit to themselves.

Because you're such a fan of generalisations i thought you'd like to know my thoughts on all cats. Cats are noisy actually. My neighbours keep Siamese cats and they're very vocal. The local moggies also often fight very loudly late at night. YOUR cat is quiet - believe it or not, other cats may behave differently. Shocking, i know.

But I'm really just pointing out the stupidity of generalisations. Thanks proving my point.

Back in the real world, me and all my stupid neighbours have a mixture of dogs, cats and children and we all get along famously - but admittedly none of us are as "intelligent" as you. But we aren't all as lonely as you've confessed to being either.

You mean if both were drowning? Or an operation?

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 20/06/2024 21:00

So @DistinguishedSocialCommentator Are you going to tell us what 'Amborella Distona' is famous for, apart from that one quote that you made up, along with Amborella Distona! ?

Twinklewonderkins · 20/06/2024 21:01

What’s stopping you from moving to a detached house OP?

Mintchocco · 20/06/2024 21:02

I think it's more on you to live rurally, far away from others if noise is a problem for you, than everyone else adjust their behaviour to suit.

LakeTiticaca · 20/06/2024 21:04

Youdontevengohere · 20/06/2024 20:40

My unpopular opinion? No one should have cats. They shit on other people’s gardens and kill wildlife. They’re an antisocial pet.

My neighbour didn't like cats......until he discovered rats under his shed. He asked me to send my cat, who is an expert ratter round. I told neighbour that my cat's rodent extermination service fee was 25 quid an hour 🤣

coldcallerbaiter · 20/06/2024 20:59

I didn't really set up a scenario, it was just a straight choice.

But yeah, you could get interesting debates with carefully chosen scenarios, like in the trolley problem - difference between passive and active situations.

  1. my cat and your child are drowning, you can only reach one, which one do you save?
  2. my cat is about to be shot, can I grab your child to use as a shield?

Is the logical next step that ONLY people with children and dogs (or possibly cats) should live in detached houses? And a minimum age for buying or renting bungalows/ground floor flats? I know lots of people who think they would like to live in the middle of a field.

Interesting point.

My cousin who is an estate agent is constantly wound up by entitled arseholes sending in letters with their offers implying they are more deserving of a particular property because they intend to bring up a family there.

My unpopular opinion is that people who don’t live in fully detached houses should expect to hear their neighbours and stop complaining about it.
