It’s just clear from SPACE how bad their candidates are. No political nous at all. They are all terrible at the key aspect of what gets them voted in.

The longer it goes on for the more unpopular they become. I wonder if there will just be a serious scale back, very little of Sunak and trying to find a good communicator to cut through. They had Gove on the radio this morning; he’s not even standing! Desperate

They were trialling the shaved Afghan for a bit but unfortunately he seems to have a genius for a) not answering the question asked and b) saying something vaguely ineffectual.
Like when asked about how the Conservatives plan to reduce VAWG, talking about introducing evidence via video link!!

Mordaunt appears to be so bruised from the debates that she's hiding in a fridge.

Oh and they have Jeremy Hunt, desperately squeaking that "Labour need an effective opposition" when his party have abjectly failed to be an "effective government".

Jeremy Hunt

Jeremy Hunt: Labour government would need effective opposition

The chancellor is the latest senior Tory to acknowledge his party could be on course for defeat.

Mind you amazing they can still get up in the morning to put it out there

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:00

Who have we had?

Jimmy Dimly, Mel Stride (a man who even his wife says every morning "sorry who are you?" And now Chris Philp.

SerendipityJane · 20/06/2024 09:00

Why on earth would a totally and utterly useless Tory party in government suddenly become an effective opposition ?

They still don't get it.

Farage will never join the Tories. He won't go anywhere he can be voted out.

NoDishiForRishi · 20/06/2024 09:02

Anyone watching the question time special tonight? I think Rishi is due a meltdown any day now and the leaders debates are as good a time as any!

bombastix · 20/06/2024 09:04

Despite all the shills on here the real problem is the Conservatives are declining in percentage terms. Sunak is that bad. The more the UK sees of him the more they choose another party. Their vote is hovering at around 20 percent. Once it is consistently below that then all bets are off. They really could be cut to less than 70 seats.

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:04

What's the format for the QT special?

What's the format for the QT special?

As far as I know it’s the usual format with party leaders as panelists. Be interesting to see if Sunak’s going for his usual shouting down and talking over approach.

What's the format for the QT special?

According to their twitter, there are 4 leaders (Starmer, Sunak, Davey and Swinney) and the audience will quiz each of them one by one, so I'm guessing half an hour each which is more than enough for Rishi to lose his temper.

I'm actually feeling really sorry for him. I don't think he's inherently a bad guy, I think he's trying to do what he thinks is best (completely ill informed due to being super rich) but has just been "promoted above his level of competence" and is surrounded by less vocal equivalents of Mad Nads who are furious with him about Johnson being forced out.
If I were Sunak I'd have resigned, called an election and moved to California.

I bet he's almost hoping to lose his seat so he can leave!

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:13

Could be the definition of car crash tv. Fortunately I'm going out tonight. After the England game.

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:14

Yes but he could have stepped down at any time @CassieMaddox

That’s good. I’m glad I’m wrong, the less adversarial the better.

I mean no one forced him to stand to be an MP in the first place. There's usually a certain amount of vanity involved

bombastix · 20/06/2024 09:15

The debate tonight cannot be worse than Grimsby or the LBC phone in with Sunak. Can it?

IClaudine · 20/06/2024 09:16

Who is the shaved afghan??

Scruffily · 20/06/2024 09:17

CassieMaddox · 19/06/2024 23:00

Wow. Wonder who that will be

Gullis, with any luck, along with the other Red Wall MPs. Great reward for having spent 5 years obediently supporting the government even on dodgy votes like the Rwanda Bill one.

If I were one of them I would be heavily tempted to go rogue and tell people to vote Labour.

TokyoSushi · 20/06/2024 09:18

Bit of a tricky one for me tonight, my 'Summer of all my Favourite Things' (Politics/Football/Olympics) means I'm caught between the leadership debate and Spain v Italy!

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:18

How many did the Tories say they wanted in the first place? Leaders debates? One a week wasn't it? Imagine if Starmer had said yes to that. Bluff been called and Sunak having to do 6 and all that rope to hang himself with

tobee · 20/06/2024 09:19

IClaudine · 20/06/2024 09:16

Chris Philp. Russ Jones nickname

I imagine a lot of senior Conservative ministers are frantically campaigning in their constituencies. And putting as much distance as they can between themselves and the central party.

Which is why it's slim pickings for ministers doing the rounds.

Or just lying in a darkened room?

If I wanted balanced political debate, with competent moderation and the aim of leaving viewers more informed after than before the event, I wouldn't watch QT.

In fact I haven't for nigh on 2 decades - you know, when it was deliberately kneecapped.

And the leaders debates are a similar waste of bandwidth. Because we don't vote for leaders. We vote for local candidates. And no matter how reasonable or sensible a leader may sound, my local candidate could be one of the loony tunes who doesn't believe in gravity and thinks cooking food makes you soft.

I'm already getting confused about the name changes as some have gone early.

Did anybody in government NOT put a bet on?

Can we be sure that they didn't put bets on being caught partying during covid?

Gove on Sky News

"Labour will use that super-majority to rig the system... to give the votes to EU citizens, 16-year-olds & prisoners to make sure they're a forever government.. "

Giving people a voice is now used as a threat?

I genuinely don't understand why one wouldn't want prisoners to have a vote.
It is important for their reintegration into society that they feel valued and not othered.
